Almost does my hand tremble with emotion as l pen these brief lines. lt is so because l believe you have sensed the vision that seers and prophets of all ages have held before youth. The vision so beautifully expressed in Ben Jong son's lyric, It is not growing like a tree . . . lt is not growing like a tree ln bulk doth make man better beg Or standing long an oak. three hundred year, To fall a log at last, dry, bald, and sear. A lily of a day ls fairer far in May, Although it fall and die that night, It was the plant and flower of light. ln small proportions we just beauties see, And in short measures life may perfect be. l3l2IfSl!lDEN1T'S MESSAEE The l-lyakem presents the students' record of the work and play activities of our institution for a year. Through the media of pictures and verbal descriptions, it leaves a record of our academic and laboratory activities, social events, and recrea- tion long to be remembered and cherished. A college is a concentrated and selected society in which young people gain knowledge and culture. Through a wide variety of experiences, crowded into four years, each student gains much of the fine art of living. ln an environment of art, music, science, and applied knowledge, each enriches his men- tal and emotional appreciations. Through living and working with teachers and fellow students, each creates his own social personality. ln the classroom, laboratory, dormitory, and rec- reation field, each widens his interests and abilities. Friend- ships are cultivated. ln education rightly understood and wise- ly given is the key to human welfare. l sincerely hope that the 'years spent on this campus have been highly justified. When, as actual teachers, your mere bookish learning may seem to you very scanty indeed, and when the old college friendships in which you might 'ijoy the more seem very far away, I hope that you can still philosophize on the des- cription of Chaucer's student, and find the joy in your new work.
