IQOIBEIQT li. MCCONNELLQ llmismfrwr l3l2IfSl!lDEN1T'S MESSAEE The l-lyakem presents the students' record of the work and play activities of our institution for a year. Through the media of pictures and verbal descriptions, it leaves a record of our academic and laboratory activities, social events, and recrea- tion long to be remembered and cherished. A college is a concentrated and selected society in which young people gain knowledge and culture. Through a wide variety of experiences, crowded into four years, each student gains much of the fine art of living. ln an environment of art, music, science, and applied knowledge, each enriches his men- tal and emotional appreciations. Through living and working with teachers and fellow students, each creates his own social personality. ln the classroom, laboratory, dormitory, and rec- reation field, each widens his interests and abilities. Friend- ships are cultivated. ln education rightly understood and wise- ly given is the key to human welfare. l sincerely hope that the 'years spent on this campus have been highly justified. ROBERT E. MCCONNELL, President i I2 EGISTIQAIQ AND DEAN MD. HENIQY J. WHITNEY Men are just as capable of goodness, nobility, and unselfishness as they are of greed, sensuality, and meanness. identify yourself with something greater than yourself and stand for it. Almost does my hand tremble with emotion as l pen these brief lines. lt is so because l believe you have sensed the vision that seers and prophets of all ages have held before youth. The vision so beautifully expressed in Ben Jong son's lyric, It is not growing like a tree . . . lt is not growing like a tree ln bulk doth make man better beg Or standing long an oak. three hundred year, To fall a log at last, dry, bald, and sear. HENRY J. WHITNEY. DEANS MD. AND MDS. U. When, as actual teachers, your mere bookish learning may seem to you very scanty indeed, and when the old college friendships in which you might 'ijoy the more seem very far away, I hope that you can still philosophize on the des- cription of Chaucer's student, and find the joy in your new work. MARGARET CCFFIN HOLMES, Dean of Women To every graduate inevitable changes lie ahead. Real joys will come 'to you through exercising your new capacities. Would it not be wise to preserve in the inevitable changes that lie ahead the principle that the essentials of life are simple and that the value of personal worth is priceless? STUDENT IEUVEIQNMENT Cappa Spedden Maxon Holl Normile Nelson Bowers Mattox ASSUC ATED STUDENTS Because it values the position it enjoys in the pla.y and work life of those who cherish a taste for complete college life, this organization of students cho- sen from all classes has had a very active year. A bright outlook on the social and administrative activities of school life among students on the campus has given these officers a splendid opportunity to do a service to the school. As the years go by, new officers will hold these positions, and new rules and laws will probably be formed, but the old spirit of doing service shall always be their fundamental slogan. A keen interest in the social activities of the campus cooperating with a desire to participate in them, has given this house organization of girls co-nsid- erable recognition. Banquet-a Halloween party-a scavenger hunt-the May Prom-the' ater parties-all these drifted by as the year rolled on-but always there was left a recognition of well-spent hours. Going a bit oriental at the May Prom with lanterns and Tea Garden motif the club climaxed a season of delightful fun. Time passes and our school days pass, but memories remain. Last year's annual marked the beginning of this section in our I-lyakem. With this new section came a reorganizing of the book to make it truly a stu- dent's book of memories. ln response to the request of the Hyakern Staff, the Board of Deans has selected the I0 most outstanding students on the Cam- pus. These leaders in our school life have helped make our activities alive for us now-they will make them live for us in our book of memories. Here you will find the Writer, the Athlete, the Artist. the Student Officer, the Scholar, the Drama Student-all of them your Campus Leaders. Waino Maki Catherine Spedden Elsie Hansen Charlotte Russell Fred Giusiano Wilkeson Ellensburg Ellensburg Yakima WIlkeS0n CAMPUS LEADERS The most outstanding points considered by the Deans in making this choice were Service, Leadership, and Character. Service to classmates, service to organizations, and service to the school, were important. Leadership that built from the past into the present school life, and on into the future, char- acter and its qualities of responsibility, cooperation in school activities, scholar- ship in school classes, and vision in school ideals, all played their part in the choice. By giving us this list of campus leaders, the Deans hope to give recognition to college accomplishment. lt is not to these alone, that this page wishes to give honor, but to all the other students who in innumerable little ways have helped our activities flourish, and have made these people leaders. The Hyakem Staff wishes to thank Mr. Whitney, Mrs. Holmes, and Mr. Holmes for cooperating with them in making this choice. 31 Time marches on---and classes march wiih fire procession of oiher memories. Within its covers you will find the pattern of your activities, your efforts, and your fun-all built from the spirit that you have put into them. lt has been our aim to catch the enthusiasm with which all of you have fashioned your college life in order that, by' recording the passing moments of it, 'we might help make it live for you in your memories and in your future activities. As you look through this I-lyakem, you will see an ever changing and enlarging picture. The faculty, with its inspiration, and the classes, from Fresh- man to Senior each growing and contributing, have formed the basis of your college spirit. They are the foundation from which you have built your activi- ties. From them you have gained the enthusiasm that is portrayed in your arts, your athletics, your organizations, your publications, and your campus life. It has been a pleasure to the Hyakem Staff to record the picture of this enthus- iasm and spirit. May future Staffs continue to have such student spirit to build into the Hyakem. But there is more than that-there is the beauty which weary hands molded, the untiring efforts of laborers laying idea upon idea. I believe it was Scott who once said, And better had they ne'er been born, who read to doubt or read to scorn. So it is with many works--there must be an understanding of all the materials and the capacity of its builder to fully appreciate the final product. And with an understanding of the work underlying newspaper make-up there comes a better evaluation of the results. As l've worked with willing but tired newspaper reporters, I've learned to appreciate more and more the truthful significance of the saying that you write with ease to show your breeding, but easy writings cursed hard reading. I hope that we have made your steps to the book of life a bit easier to climb. ANNE MASSOURAS. With added facilities for the CAMPUS CRIER office which have been put into effect this Spring quarter to give the associated students a better publication, we of the staff feel that after more students become interested in our new surroundings and the real benefit derived from participation, the out- come will be evidenced by a better CAMPUS CRIER. g DICK BIRD. Favorable crop conditions Ellensburg is the county seat of Kittitas county and the geograph- ical center of the state of Washington. It has a high percentage of sun- shine with an average of 217 clear days a year. The climate is pleasant, varying from arid to sub-humid. Most of the preciptation comes in the late fall, winter and spring, a situation favorable to irrigated crop production. Kittitas Valley offers more new farms in Washington. Fundament- ally, this is a general and diversified farming area. On the gently rolling landscape have been built farms on which all farming enterprises do well. A long growing season, favorable climate, plenty of hay and other feeds, make this a dairy country. People like to live in this irrigated section because of the surroundings, climate, productivity of soil and the easy access to markets. Rapid trans-continental rail service, combined with the most improved transportation equipment, make it possible for the grower to advantageously reach the large eastern and California markets. Dairying is one of the most successful farm lines and industries. Increasing amounts of sweet cream are being shipped to Seattle and Dairying industry. Tacoma. The local creameries manufacture butter from 984,500 pounds or more of butterfat. Production costs are low. Other economies are due to the favorable climate and less expensive housing. Approximately one hundred typical logs, partially exhumed, and descended from the sacred gardens of the Orient lie here. Specimen hunters have caused the policing of the area by the State Park Board. This forest has made Ellens- burg attractive to tourists. The petrified forest is one of the greatest geological wonders of the present, appealing to both scientists and laymen. Altogether there are thousands of specimens situated in twenty sections of arid land. The for- mation occurred ten to thirty million years ago when the logs were carried by flowing lava into an ancient lake which chilled the lava. The wood was changed to opal but the details of the wood structure were perfectly preserved. The forest is the discovery of Mr. George Beck, science instructor, of the Ellensburg Normal. i This space by courtesy of the Light and Water Utilities of the City of Ellensburg, the Kiwanis Club, F.
