CentroI is proud to present - Excerpts of five letters, each written by former students, which show their appreciation of the training and guidance received at Central: H0ward HutchinSOn, I948 graduate of the Machine Tool Division, writes in part: - --I learned the fundamentals of machine shop procedure and how to set up, operate and care for the basic machine tools C. Ronald Marcotte, graduate of the former Building Vocational High School, writes in part: - - - and I would like to add that the instruction re- ceived from the various teachers was a contributing factor to my becoming a successful builder in the Cincinnati area, Joseph J. Kiffmeyer, 1939 graduate of the Aviation Division writes in part: ---In the past ten years as a mechanic for the American Airlines many problems have been mine to solve. The training I received at Central has been of inestimable vaiue in helping me to solve these problems. Paul Holub, 1943 graduate of the Electrical Division, writes in port: '- - - and the training received in the service and repair of radios has pro- vided me with the fundamentals which are important in my own business of radio and television merchandising and repair. I Poul Grubler, Service Manager of the Metropolitan Motors, and President of the Automotive Service Directors Association, writes in part: - - - I had the privilege and pleasure of attending the school when it was in its infancy as the Automotive Trade School, which then consisted of two class rooms, a shop, and a small office. I was the first student to co-op and have always considered this an honor. I have followed the trade since graduation in June I920, and for the school and its faculty I shall always carry a high regard. John Dawson, Boys' Week Representative A DAY AS A COUNCILMAN The call for 0 Boys' Week candidate to represent Central at City Holi in the campaign for the nine councilmen to serve for one day, was, as usual answered by our best, namely, John Dawson, Eugene Fields, Lester Johnson and Paul McPeek. These young aspirants, boosted by their campaign managers, gave their Campaign speeches before the entire school. A volunteer performance by young musicians of Central added zest to the political rally. On the following day a popular election was held, with cull boys casting ballots for their choice John Dawson was Centralls favorite son to com- pete with the other leaders of the high schools at City Hall. The nine councilmen were sworn in by the City Solicitor, after which the roll call was taken at the request of Mayor Cosh. Following luncheon at the Sinton Hotel, these young City Fathers took over their responsibilities to help make city ordinances at Council meetings. MINING n , , mm Samoa .mcmpm, Amtfsvma many Hm Mm 153; n: 1mm BEHIND-THE-WHEEL DRIVER TRAINING In May, 1948, by authority of the Board of Education of Cincinnati, Ohio, 0 program of behind-thevwheel driver training was started in the schools. Central was the first high school to get organized and rolling under the new order. w ; Cars furnished by various Cincinnati automobile dealers are used in the training. Students may apply for such training after completion of related class work in the fields of science and physics. Upon completion of the course students receive Cl permit license. UNDER THE JUNiPER TREE Like Elijah of Did, we sit under the Juniper Tree of disappointment as we view the athletic accomplishments for this year After a runner-up finish of our football team last year, we looked forward to an even better finish this year, but graduations and drop-outs so depleted our varsity squad that the best we could do was to win three, tie one, and lose six. The Reserves compiled a record of two wins, two ties, and three losses. The bright spot was the Freshman Team whose record of seven wins and no losses gives promise of better days to come. For the first time in the Schoolis history the football team competed in the annual D'oubIe-heoder Football Classic Next year calls for a tough schedule including Lima and Portsmouth. I! As the servant reported to Elijah, ---there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, which was the promise of refreshing rain, so the Cross Country Team provided us with relietc from our sorrows by going undefeated in local competition and finishing in a tie for second piece with Akron in the state meet. The Reserves had an enviable record of making a perfect score in each city meet. The Track and Field Teom won the District Championship and made a creditable showing in the State Finals at C0- lumbus. The basketball team left us withia forlorn feeling by ending up in the cellar in league standing with a record of three wins and fifteen losses. The bright spot of the basketball season was the selection of Jack Blau as 0 member of the Times-Star Team and a member and captain of the Post All-Star Team. He compiled a totai of 315 points for the season with 16.6 point average per game. In league piay he averaged 19.2 per game. The team dropped a hard fought 55 to 51 game to Walnut Hills in the District Tournament. The baseball team, after a rather mediocre season, spurted to win two games in the district tournament before being eliminated by the Hughes Big Reds, who later went on to win the State Championship. As we sit under the Juniper Tree nursing our wounded pride, we, as Elijah, feel that we have no friends and should give up, but the still, small voice of hope whispers words of encouragement to carry on under burden- ing handicaps and to look forward to the day when we shall have our own school and athletic field. When it is considered that our seniors co-op, which affects the entire school program of athletics, it can readily be understood that we give a good account of ourselves in spite of this handicap. This terse though somewhat allegorical account of our athletic happen- ings for the year is written to show that disappointments and discourage- ments have tried men's souls from the beginning of time and will ever be thus. WE'VE COME A LONG WAY To say that Central has come a long way in her aesthetic development would be only half telling the story. Seven years ago, with the creation of our school, we inherited practically nothing of an aesthetic nature from the various schools from which Central was formed. Prior to Central's inception, pedagogical emphasis in the sister vocational schools of the city was largely on vocational subjects, little or no thought being given to art, music, and drama. With the new school came general education in the first two years, and vocational emphasis in the third and fourth years, Music was added as a regular part of the curriculum. The art society which enlists the interests and financial aid of all students, has placed several works of art, both original oils and reproductions, about the buildings for all to enjoy. Our art society has proved that man can improve his surroundings, even in the shops, by adding an aesthetic touch through the medium of art. Above the noise of the beating hammer, through the medium of the welder's torch, and the automobile's exhaust, above the whirr of motors, these pictures hang as a reminder that life is more than toil and sweat. The glee club has provided a program of vocal music which has been the source of much pleasure to the school and has brought many favorable comments from various sections of the city. The glee club is a participant in the Biennial High School Music Festival, competing against music clubs from other high schools in the city. The club has made public appearances in schools, churches, and at civic celebrations. lt annually presents a spring concert. A new-comer in the aesthetic life of our school is the presentation of an annual varieties show. This show is an extravaganza in nature and uses pupil talent throughout. The l948 Varieties played to a full house in Hughes Auditorium, and, as we go to press, the 1949 edition of the show promises to be bigger and better than ever. The band provides an instrumental music background for school assem- blies. lt marches on the gridiron with our football teams, supplies music for the Varieties Show, and presents concerts in schools, and in churches lt also participates in the Biennial Out-door High School Band Program pre- sented by the high school bands of the city. The band also owns its own uniforms. When we say, We've come a long way, we pause to give credit to those responsible ,s faculty, pupils, administration, and especially to those of the faculty who have given so generously of their time and effort. Only those who appreciate what it means to deal with life's intangibles can know the toil and sac'rifice it has taken to produce this Aesthetic Flower out of the shale rock at Iowa Avenue.
