CENTRALis HERITAGE VER there! Over there! Praise the Lord and Poss the Ammunition ! O In the gap that iies between these two wartime song hits Cincinnati finds the old ond the new in vocotional schoois for boys, Soldiers car- ried the first tune into their shops, back in 1918, while being trained in carpentry and motorcycie work, With the close of the war, the national government donated the used equip- ment to the Cincinnati Board 01 Education, making possible the estobiishment ot a school at Court ond Gilbert tor some twenty boys interested in outomobiie and motorcycle work. The Automotive Trodes School continued in this building at Gilbert Avenue and Court Street for two years, and was then moved into the ln- dustrial Arts Building of Withrow High Schooi, where it remained until 1929. It was then moved to its new building at 2315 iowa Street. The new quarters, built by the Board of Education, were well fitted for automotive works In the summer 01 1929, the introduction of courses in aviation had to an aviation division, which had grOWn to such size by 1939 as to warrant a separate building at Seventh and Broadway, The two divisions, Automotive and Aviation, were knowri as separate schools. With the success of our first vocational school assured, three years after its founding, September of 1921, ciasses were placed in operation in the Buiiding Trades School, The Electrical Trades School, and the Mechanical Trades School. The three schools shared rooms in the old First District School at Liberty and Spring Streets. The Building Trades School began its career with fifteen boys enrolled for instruction in Carpentry and architectural drawing. The following year courses were offered in sign painting, brick laying, and cabinet making. By 1923 the steadily increasing student body made pOSSlble the division of the Building Trades' group into 0 section distinct from the other two schools. The Electrical High School enrolled three boys in that first class of i92ii House wiring, motor repair, and telephony were taught. Seven years later the school was transferred to 412 E. Sixth Street. Thus the Electrical Trodes School became a separate unit. The first class of Mechanical High School enrolled ten boys to train for the machine industry. Prior to this, machine-shop training was Offered incidentally in other schools. The school moved to McMillan Street and Essex Place in 1931. Its own machine shop had been made possible through the generosity of Machine Tool Manufacturers of Cincinnati, lending equipment to the Board of Education, The fall of 1942 brought the combining of all four schools into one complete unit, housed on Iowa Street, in Automotive's quarters and the necessary additional buildings. Each of the five schools iAutomotive, Aviation, Building, Eiectricai, Mechonicoii has mode 0 distinct contribution to the foundation on which Central Vocational High Schooi has been built. And, it is indeed significant that, once again! the first students of Cincinnoti's new Central Vocational High School should go about their classes with wartime tunes on their lips E101
