Deaths Shock and sorrow hit the U.S. and the world when John Lennon, the famous musician of the Beatles, died. When announced that he had been murdered on December 8th, people, especially his fans, could not believe it. There were many rumors, but the true story reported by the police was that Mark David Chapman, who was mentally ill and was staying 9 blocks away from the Lennon residence, shot him at least 4 times. The irony of John Lennon's death was that after 5 years he was just finding peace within himself and for many years had tried to communi- cate to the world to give peace a chance. The death of John Lennon, the most outspoken Beatle, was a tragedy that people were dumbfounded by. Many feel the music world will suffer. Colonel Sanders died at 90 years of age in the Jewish Hospital of Louisville, Kentucky. His death, on December 16, 1980 was diag- nosed as pneumonia. He was well known for his finger lick'n good chicken. The Colonel was in the Kentucky Fried Chicken fast food business until he was 89 when he became ill with leukemia. His other occupations included streetcar conductor, railroad fireman and insurance salesman. His business made him a substantial amount of money with which he funded scholarships. Other noted deaths were the Shah of Iran, who died of cancer, Steve McQueen a top actor, who died at the age of 50, of cancer, and Peter Sellers, another top actor, died of a heart attack. .g9 we '9 IP Efefflhlir QQ? Duran, complaining of stomach cramps and weakness in his arms, quit unex- pectedly in the 8th round, showing no signs of quitting in the earlier rounds. Duran stated, I am retiring from box- ing right now. There will be no more fights. I'm tired of fighting. Even though Leonard was ahead, win- ning four of the seven rounds, it was by no means a one-sided fight. ls Bjorn Borg, at 24, the best player to ever lift a racquet? According to many experts he is, especially after winning his 5th Wimbledon Championship. He is the only man to do so thus far, and it is a record likely to stand for generations. The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Kansas City Royals in six games to win the World Series. Mike Schmidt, third baseman for the Phillies, was named the Na- tional League's Most Valuable Player and Steve Carlton of the Phillies won his third Cy Young Award. West Valley High School the second high school in the An- derson Union High School District is still under construc- tion but is expected to open next September. Holiday skiiers may ne wsappointed by lack of snow The traditional Thanksgiving opening of the ski season in California was delayed as re- sort operators awaited the first snowfalls. This was bad news for skiers, who were forced to travel great distances to find snow. The lack of snow disappoint- ed many of the students and teachers here at C.V. 181

Both boys and girls wore sweaters over shirts with collars. Although these were the styles, you could wear anything and feel comfortable, T-shirts and jeans or pants and terry-cloth shirts. Being free to do and wear what you want and not be condemned for being yourself was a quality students enjoyed. Julie Jones, Stacey Bartlett, Kim Failor and Lynn Tews show some styles for girls.
