Deaths Shock and sorrow hit the U.S. and the world when John Lennon, the famous musician of the Beatles, died. When announced that he had been murdered on December 8th, people, especially his fans, could not believe it. There were many rumors, but the true story reported by the police was that Mark David Chapman, who was mentally ill and was staying 9 blocks away from the Lennon residence, shot him at least 4 times. The irony of John Lennon's death was that after 5 years he was just finding peace within himself and for many years had tried to communi- cate to the world to give peace a chance. The death of John Lennon, the most outspoken Beatle, was a tragedy that people were dumbfounded by. Many feel the music world will suffer. Colonel Sanders died at 90 years of age in the Jewish Hospital of Louisville, Kentucky. His death, on December 16, 1980 was diag- nosed as pneumonia. He was well known for his finger lick'n good chicken. The Colonel was in the Kentucky Fried Chicken fast food business until he was 89 when he became ill with leukemia. His other occupations included streetcar conductor, railroad fireman and insurance salesman. His business made him a substantial amount of money with which he funded scholarships. Other noted deaths were the Shah of Iran, who died of cancer, Steve McQueen a top actor, who died at the age of 50, of cancer, and Peter Sellers, another top actor, died of a heart attack. .g9 we '9 IP Efefflhlir QQ? Duran, complaining of stomach cramps and weakness in his arms, quit unex- pectedly in the 8th round, showing no signs of quitting in the earlier rounds. Duran stated, I am retiring from box- ing right now. There will be no more fights. I'm tired of fighting. Even though Leonard was ahead, win- ning four of the seven rounds, it was by no means a one-sided fight. ls Bjorn Borg, at 24, the best player to ever lift a racquet? According to many experts he is, especially after winning his 5th Wimbledon Championship. He is the only man to do so thus far, and it is a record likely to stand for generations. The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Kansas City Royals in six games to win the World Series. Mike Schmidt, third baseman for the Phillies, was named the Na- tional League's Most Valuable Player and Steve Carlton of the Phillies won his third Cy Young Award. West Valley High School the second high school in the An- derson Union High School District is still under construc- tion but is expected to open next September. Holiday skiiers may ne wsappointed by lack of snow The traditional Thanksgiving opening of the ski season in California was delayed as re- sort operators awaited the first snowfalls. This was bad news for skiers, who were forced to travel great distances to find snow. The lack of snow disappoint- ed many of the students and teachers here at C.V. 181

1' Atlanta bo Aneme A series of murders in Atlanta, Georgia was another of the terrible events in 1980-81. Po- lice found it a very difficult case to solve. Darrell Rich of Cottonwood was convicted of murder and sentenced to death for the murder of 4 women in Yolo County, He is also charged with 18 sexual assaults and 5 physical assaults against women in Shasta County, one of which he beat to death with a rock. He threw a young girl off a bridge on Shasta Lake. The men and women of Shasta County had strong emo- tions about Rich since his victims lived in the area. A teacher said, Living in the Hilltop apartment area and knowing several abductions occured near there, we be- came very frightened. Darrell Rich had a hard life as a child which may have resulted in his insane acts of cruelty, but this is not to say his crimes are justified. Most people will not forget or forgive his acts. ri 11,-es a 'gain . IIIIEIIQ Lind Britain's most notorious mass murderer, a killer known as The Yorkshire Ripper , has claimed 13 victims. At least 4 women have survived attacks by the Ripper. No young woman is safe while he is at large, George Oldfield, assistant chief constable of the West Midlands police warned. Nine of the Ripperfs victims have been prostitutes, but three were respect- able women apparently killed at random. The Ripper takes his name from Jack the Ripper , who stalked the streets of I.ondon's White Chapel district for weeks in 1888. His identity was never discov- ered. His modern namesake has evaded the big- gest and costliest manhunt in British histo- ry. Police had questioned 195,000 peo- ple, checked 175,000 vehicles, and searched nearly 30,000 houses. Update: Police arrested a suspect who killed himself in his cell. C Hawes gllllty on 1 qlxu Hawes trlaail ullderxlding in Be Shasta County District Attorney Will Hawes was found guilty of being intoxicated on the job nearly two years ago and acting out of personal motives in seeking S100,000 bail for a defendant in a perjury prosecution. The nine-woman, three-man jury found Hawes not guilty on three other charges of misconduct. Hawes' conviction was based on the charge that his conduct fell below the standard of decency rightfully expected of a public official.
