Things never appeared very bright because of natural disasters, wars, several murders and deaths and the hostage situation. It was the first time, in the 444 days the 52 hostages had been kept prisoner, that America could actually believe they would be home. Negotiations did not prove successful until January 20th when a financial agreement was reached. There was a sense of relief for the families of the 50 men and 2 women when the plane took off from Iran. Ex-hostages told of the cruelty of their captors: beatings, mock executions, and death threats. Coincidently, hostages were released the same day President Carter left presidency and President Elect Reagan was inau- gurated. I-le rode on the crest of a conservative tide that swept Republicans to control of the Senate for the first time in 26 years. After he won, Reagan told a victory cele- bration in Los Angeles, I am not fright- ened by what lies ahead. Reagan also stated that one of his goals is to take the government off the backs of the American people. In the end, the campaign boiled down to two main issues: the economy and war and peace. Carter couldn't overcome his own record and he failed to convince voters that Rea- gan was too reckless. Reagan attacked the President on the economy, where he was most vulnerable, asking voters whether they were better or worse off than they were four years ago.
