li.. 178 4 World News Report For Americans, the year held surprises at every turn with Iran looming above all other problems. Things never appeared very bright because of natural disasters, wars, several murders and deaths and the hostage situation. U.S. 1 OVQI' 11 aweatjeas . gg ' ' aorta January 20th the hostages were airborn and on their way home. It was the first time, in the 444 days the 52 hostages had been kept prisoner, that America could actually believe they would be home. Negotiations did not prove successful until January 20th when a financial agreement was reached. There was a sense of relief for the families of the 50 men and 2 women when the plane took off from Iran. Ex-hostages told of the cruelty of their captors: beatings, mock executions, and death threats. Coincidently, hostages were released the same day President Carter left presidency and President Elect Reagan was inau- gurated. Approximately 30 minutes after Reagan was sworn in the plane with the hostages was off. It was a special day Americans will not forget. New Iraqi peace offer spurned by Khomeini The Iraqi-Iranian war, that started in September, 1980, has been an issue with the U.S. If the U.S. took sides it could have had an ill effect on the hostage situation. The problem was our main oil supply, and that of other nations, was being tied up in the war. The oil could have gone up in smoke, literally, cause prices to rise or the war could cause a shortage of oil which would be bad for the U.S. who depends on an open oil supply. -of? fo w5'9,i'J9Qo C' 0 ag-Q 9 42' S ' o IQ Ronald Wilson Reagan was elected the 40th President of the United States Tues- day, Nov. 4. I-le rode on the crest of a conservative tide that swept Republicans to control of the Senate for the first time in 26 years. After he won, Reagan told a victory cele- bration in Los Angeles, I am not fright- ened by what lies ahead. Reagan also stated that one of his goals is to take the government off the backs of the American people. In the end, the campaign boiled down to two main issues: the economy and war and peace. Carter couldn't overcome his own record and he failed to convince voters that Rea- gan was too reckless. Reagan attacked the President on the economy, where he was most vulnerable, asking voters whether they were better or worse off than they were four years ago. Men born in '62 have to register for the draft Xll male citizens and aliens living in the United States who were born in 1960, 1961 or 1962 must regis- ter. Other men are required to register within 30 days of their 18th birthdays. The Carter administration was re- sponding to fears that the nation's armed forces could not mobilize in time to force a military emergen- cy.
