Qi Fads are as big a part of high school as Friday night dances and pep assemblies. This year fashion is as big and wide spread as ever. Al- though Spokane is a little behind when it comes to fashion, kids have kept up with New York fashion jeans and California Hawaiian shirts. Pants have changed from straight legged and painter to pleated and baggy. Pastel colored sweaters a- long with blouses were popular with an assortment of lace collars. Any girl could dress up her outfit with a variety of pins like rainbows, Miss Piggy, or Crayola crayons. Pierced earrings went from gold and silver to bright pink and purple and some girls had their ears pierc- ed twice or even more. Hairstyles were wide spread and girls were wearing combs, braids, and pony tails and the boys were even spend- ing time on their feathered short hair. Popular cowboy fashions appeal- ed to everyone at CV and it gave the boys a chance to be fashionable, too. Other trends of the time were buying used army pants and bowling shirts at Value Village and even European punk rock took its toll. In the music world, there was ACXDC, Cheap Trick, Earth, Wind and Fire, Brothers Johnson, Com- modores, Donna Summer, Michael lackson, Devo, B-52's, and Frank Zappa. 7f 1980-81 was definitely a year of many fads and fashions and we will look back at them and laugh like we do at our parents' bobbie socks, leather jackets, and ducktails. This song seems to have been Mr. Hafner's theme song for the Year of the Bear. It epitomizes the pride and confif dence he had in the student body - its scholastic, athletic, musical and artistic talents. Chuck Hafner's first year as principal at Central Valley High School was per- fect in every way. He worked closely and enthusiastically with the students and faculty to build fresh ideas, positive attitudes, and 'pride and class.' Mr. Hafner made it obvious he enjoyed coming to school and perform- ing his duties with the able assistance of Kathy Irwin and Anton Rasmussen... At the age of 29 he comes to work at Central Valley High School as a teacher, head football coach, and head track coach. Teaching everything there was to teach, with the exception of English, Hass not only gained respect from the staff but popularity with the stu- dent body. There were no free periods in those days, so I had a pretty full schedule, said Rass. As head coach ot both football and track, he gained the reputation of being fair and respected. History teacher Ron Knudsen, said, The kids always played hard and won for him and they will never forget him. In 1960 he relinquished his coach- ing position on the track team to Clayton Mitchel to begin the coun- seling department as head counsel- or. In 1962, he relinquished his posi- tion as head football coach to Gary Davis. The big event in 1962 was Rass becoming Vice Principal. I have never known another admini- strator who cared more about 'his kids'. It is hard for a Vice Principal to care so much when his job is discipline, said English teacher, Mary Zografos. For 27 years Rass has committed himself to Central Valley, the faculty, and the students. It is with sadness that we bid a fond farwell to our be- loved Rass. He is retiring with the class of '81 to rest and take the leisure that he deserves. He has the right to be self- ish and have some time with his family , said colleague, KathyIrwin. Rass - from the class of '81, the student body, and the faculty - goodbye. We love you. TOP FAR LEFT: During Spirit Week, Bass lights everyone up with a bonfire. Among the accomplishments of the 1980-81 school year was the Leadership Con- ference at Ross Point, an exciting spirit week with a bonfire, sing-a- long and spirit breakfast, and a Christmas caroling party for the entire school. The officers held student council meeting every first and third Wed- nesday of each month and got new blue sweaters for themselves and the other members of the student coun- sel. They also planned some spring events so that the students had some- thing to release their spring fever energy. With the help of Mr. Hafner they made the school year one that everyone would remember. 9. 1Pl?'l?1'7I7ll rr'r F lf'r'r1-UF 'SEED ffffllf From Left to Right: Terry Ota, Parliamentarian, Rick Sloan, Vice Presidents, Iohn Meyers, Sgt. at Arms. This attitude ex- pressed by Coach Blair was reflected in Central Valley's Girls' Varsity Basketball team throughout the en- tire season. Being rated fourth in Washington State, the Lady Bear's team had to live up to some high ex- pectations. They met these with victory after victory for Central Valley. In response to the fine exhibit ot basketball playing displayed by the Lady Bears, Coach Blair stated, I sincerely hope that the girls reach their goals because they really de- serve it. Some credit tor the Girls Varsity Basketball team making it big must be attributed to the support they re- ceived throughout the season. Due to the winning record and the rise ot Central Valley spirit, more students attended games this year than in any previous year. Mommy, how do you spell zylafone? You spell xylophone, x-y-l-o-p-h-o-n-e. That certainly isn't what Language Arts is all about. A very small amount is spelling. The rest is grammar, composition and litera- ture. Among some of the books read in literature are the: Lord of the Flies, The Pearl Lisa, Brightand Dark, and The Red Badge of Courage. In addition to editifying students in grammar and literature, the Language Arts Department also brought beauty, talent, creativity and boundless intel- lect to the halls of C.V. There was an addition to the language Arts Department this year. Megan Leigh, or better known as Mom to C.V. students, blended in quite well with allot the other crazy English teachers. She was also accepted and well liked by the students she worked with. Megan came to Central Valley with very little know- ledge ot journalism. This fact made her work twice as hard as to learn every- thing there was to know. Overall Mrs. Leigh caught on very quickly. This year they continued to help build strong bodies and minds through in and out of school activities. Weight Training and Weight Control classes contri- buted, greatly to the P.E. program. These classes were designed for those not required or not able to participate in general physical education so that they too would have an everyday way to stay in good shape. 92 .4v 5s.,, . if .L x . z Xggw--.r ,- x ' il am ...Aiifif 'fu -'xr ,:- fi wg., - 5,-L Q - Rx X. The mem- bers are hard workers and know that practice makes perfect as they proved at the Marching Band com- petition. They placed second out of 14 for the triple A school bands. They made it on to the University of Idaho for more competition and placed sixth out of 20 bands. Mr. Clayton, advisor, has been working hard with the Iazz, Concert, and Symphonic bands. He says there is nothing else he would rather do. Mr. Clayton says he enjoys working with high school students. They have more enthusiasm than college kids. High expectations await the future bands of Central Valley. Mr. Clay- ton's long range goal is to be number one nationally. Somebody has to be there, why not Central Valley. He is working for a high degree of excel- lence. Although most of the kids are in it for fun, they realize the import- ance of it and they feel that number one is a reasonable goal. With approximately 75 members, the guardian angels, or G.A.'s, rapidly expanded in size and coverage. Their responsibilities included decorating the football players' homes the first game, last game, and homecoming. The rest of the year they decorated the lockers of the football players, girl's and boy's basketball players, and competitors ot state debate and designated spring sports. Mrs. Gavin stressed that Spirit Club made an effort' to support as many activities, major and minor, as possible. But we can't really have total spirit if just girls participate. To add an extra special art- istic ability to the holidays, they painted various business windows. They are the preservers of beauty. Central Valley's Key Club is a service organization in which the members create projects to better our school and community. The 75 members ot the Key Club thrive on work and service for others giving members an opportunity to gain knowledge by work experience. The members in Key Club are unique in many ways. The new Bear Necessities is a store and Deli in one. DECA students worked hard on putting the store together. But because of building problems the set date of Nov. 6 was not met and the store opened on Tuesday, Nov. 18. Advisor, Clarence Scott said, The students are gaining experience in store supervision and in running the show themselves. Although the store is popular among the students and faculty there was much controversy over the winner ofthe name contest, Bear-Pr phernalia. Many of the students and faculty felt that the name Bear- A-pherna1ia indicated the use of drugs and drug paraphernalia. When the DECA students stood their ground over the newly chosen name, many petitions and complaints were issued, and in the end, the name Was changed to Bear Necessities. In the end everyone was happy and well ted. ABOVE: Senior DECA member displays mouth watering beet sandwich. I'm gonna get upset! Alright, who keeps using my football pictures? I AM mad!! 'I'l'1ey're mine! Ooh my gosh, there is a picture just lying here! Where's my ruler? Where-is-my- ruler. You're sitting on it! Somebody goes 'Hey, somebody tell a dirty joke!' and I go, 'I know a dirty.' I looked around and Mr. Bell was not there so I told this gross joke and everybody goes 'Yuk - gross!' and I turned around and there was Mr. Bell. I was so embarrassed! You sick dog, Timm! These were just some of the things said around deadline time in the yearbook class. Even though the class had a new teacher and a new staff, a lot was accomplished. Mrs. Leigh, otherwise known as Mom, worked just as hard as the students to learn the yearbook procedures. She was a big help to the yearbook staff. There was a time that it was doubtful that the Seniors would have colored pictures, but with fund raising events put on by the senior class, the money was raised to pay the extra money for the color. 122 K 5rw'4.anff if ' i GN li lr.
