IflTH AN All siAmwrorta Produced by Students of Central Union High School El Centro California m COURTESY OF FO) WEST GCJAST THEATERS We dedicate this, our 1961 La Solana, to Harry and Nettie McCracken, especially in 1961 as we take stock of our school and recognize the service it has oflered. Looking back, we see the 44 years in which ovir administration building has stood, serving us, the students of C.U.H.S. We pause now to look at the building and at the McCrackens; we also recall their many years of combined service. Mr. and Mrs. McCracken not only have served us, but they have given to us knowledge, knowledge not only of Queen Dido and Caesar, hydrogen and the other elements but also of life. Hundreds of students have graduated from the Administration Building and have gone out into the world with a greater understanding of that world because of the teachings of the McCrackens; that understanding included mathematics, science, Latin and French as well as the many extras learned in their classrooms — the history, civilization, citizenship, everyday knowledge of life and people gained through extensive travel. Much of that knowledge came to Mrs. McCracken in the classrooms of France at 1he University of Strasbourg and of Mexico City at the University of Mexico; and to Mr. McCracken in the classrooms of the American West at the Universities of Washington and Southern California. Both the McCrackens have their masters ' degrees. The diversified knowledge given to us by the McCrackens will be remembered and recalled throughout our lives. ' As we picture them very much a part of Life at Central, we honor and thank Harry and Nettie McCracken for their years of service to us, the, students H.S. 11 Hi P I II II III ■lllllillii llw— l  |l WE [ CMEMIIBIEIR .M T Ih IE STAGI ' . 1 Hi combined se they have g Caesar, hydr have graduc the world wi ' of the McCr( and French history, civili through exte; in the classrc at the Unive American W Both the McC given to us 1 our lives. 1911 — SERVING THE COMMUNITY IMPERIAL IRRIGATION DISTRICT 1961 V ' ' ' , u V 1_S IPIROIDIUCIEIR.S Board of Trustees: Raymond Reeder. It was presented Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 at the Casa de Manana Build- ing at the fairgrounds. The beautiful scenery, cos- tumes, and colorful dancing together with the excellent cast, made this senior play another great presentation. The compli- cated plot of lovers mixed up with the enchantments of the Fairy King Oberon and Puck and a group of tradesmen re- hearsing for a play makes one of the most delightful of Shake- speare ' s comedies. All the actors and stage crew worked diligently to contribute to a smooth-running producti on. This was the fifth time a Shakespearean play has been presented by the senior class and, as in years gone by, it was a great success because of the directorship of Martm E. Cou- tant. The play was presented on March 23, 24, 25, 1961. A magician attempts to deceive Aladdin with a magical lamp from which a geni materializes upon command. But Aladdin outwits him and employs the geni to turn him into a prince and gains the princess for his wife. The magician recovers the lamp, but Aladdin rescues his princess and has a happy life. Scheherazade sets every scene; a street, a cave, a palace; these intrigued the audience to full attention. The en- chanting harem dancers and the mighty sword dancers livened the scenes. Under the direction of Martin E. Coutant, the play was a success. CniEIEIRILIEAIDIEIRS Say, Spartans, As the school year ends, we ' d like you to remember all the activities of your cheerleaders. During the summer we attended Redlands Cheerleading School where we learned new yells and ideas to build up our school spirit. Homecoming week brought a slave auction of the football boys, a lawn hop, and a serpentine down Main Street. At the pep rallies you learned new cheers such as Say Spartans, Scit Scat, and Paladin. Thanks very much to the Pep Band, which we hope will continue in the following years. This year, thanks to our great basketball team, we were able to charter three buses to our third C.l.F. game in San Bernardino. In closing we ' d like to say that we had a wonderful time this year and remember — We ' re from Central, We couldn ' t be prouder, So if you cannot hear us, We ' ll yell a little louder! Through their own self-determination, desire, and constant hard work each day after school during the five month track season, the track team has won recognition for our school and distinction for themselves. Though the majority of our track team consists of juniors and underclassmen, we won the Cotton Carnival and the Yuma Invitational. Though many of the members of the track team have distinguished themselves this season, recognition must go to Joe Hernandez, who though only a sophomore, holds two C records and one varsity school record.
