He began here as a high school and junior college teacher, a position he held for four years. During the following three years, besides teaching he was vice-principal. The next year he left teaching to become a full-time vice-principal of Central. The last three years here he has been our principal and assis- tant superintendent. At the end of this school year Mr. Ptleger will leave us to attend Indiana University on a fifteen-month fellowship. We wish him luck, and hope that he will one day return. -I ', Q is I' Q. fir. G4-aj !S, 1-L GUMMISSIUNERS The student body officers, the Commissioners, have been busily fulfilling their duties this year. Some of these are: holding Student Body elections, solving problems which arise on campus, and regulating extra-curricular activities. The main achievement during the year was the clean-up campaign. This campaign could not have been carried out it it hadn't been for the interest taken by the students, and their co-operation with the Commissioners to keep the campus clean. Future plans are: organizing a Student Court, buying class gifts, installing a new P.A. system, and taking care of any problems which arise. It has been my privilege to work for two years on the LA SOLANA, and it has been an honor that I served as editor this year. It is a wonderful but bewildering thought to know that after tour wonderful years we are at the top and will soon be out on our own. Although we are leaving it is nice to know we will be 1 't d b I , . nvi e ac : to attend the highlights we know so well. I wish my fellow Seniors all the luck in the world. I know that all Seniors wish lots of luck to underclassmen, who have been our friends and class- t d ma es an who will take our place at CENTRAL in the years to come. May God help you find your way through life pleasant and happy. This year they put on Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew, and gave the Senior-Return with a Hawaiian theme. The gift to the school was black stage curtains which the senior home- making class made. The school year was finished up with the annual ditch day and graduation. rim, .3 1 X C' ix-'Q , -,-,343 lm' 'N Q I ..- '3 , X , C, ESTHER AGUILAR Lingo Activities: Red Cross 55-58, Pres. SUPHUMDRE CLASS As the sophomore year is primarily a money-earning year, the class of 1960 set out to increase their finances as much as possible. They earned money by various money-raising projects such as the Sophomore Sock Hop cmd a number ot bake sales. The Sophomore's proudest achievement was their float entered in the Homecoming parade which won first prize and a cash award of ten dollars. Through lots of hard work, guided by a fine group of officers, the Sopho- more class made this a prosperous and fun-filled year. These points can be made by speaking at the several tourna- ments, at student congresses, or by speaking in front of clubs and assemblies. This year the El Centro Chapter was awarded a plaque for being the outstanding chapter in Southern California. Each year students who have achieved the necessary points to belong to this honorary organization travel to several NFL student Congresses and two national qualifying speech tournaments, one in the Los Angeles area, and one in the San Diego area. xl v 5523, 3, 5 V 550 L t ' u 15 'ill lb 1,-P rf-1 11':'::'.'::-:.- I - X X hs.: . VARSIT GLEE CLUB This is the first year that there has been a Varsity Glee Club. Previously there has been only the Girls Glee Club, which included all girls taking singing. Now, girls with one or more years of glee club are eligible for Varsity Glee Club, while the other singers are in the Iunior Varsity Glee Club. The I.V. is not a performing club: Varsity is. The annual Christmas Program given in the auditorium, for Central stu- dents, is one of the club's activities. Also, performances are given for El Centro clubs. The highlight of the club's programs was the Spring concert, held March 9-10. The concert also included the performances of the Boys Chorus and the Spartan Band. Not only in El Centro do these girls perform, but also in other towns around the Valley. This year the club traveled to Brawley for the County Music Festival. JUNIDR VARSIT GLEE CLUB ln order to have a better performing Varsity Glee Club at Central, the Iunior Varsity Glee Club has been installed. The club itself, composed of students in their first year oi sinqinq, does not perform, but the members learn to read notes and are prepared for the Varsity Glee Club. As in previous years, they sponsored the first home dance, which was held after the Yuma-El Centro game. They also held a cake sale early in the year, to which the members contributed cakes that were auctioned on campus one day at noon. Twice a week for approximately three weeks, the Club held dances at noon in the gymnasium. The students paid a small admission fee and danced to records. With the money collected from these various activities the Varsity C bought a movie camera for the school and also all the film for filming athletic events. About half way through the year the Club sponsored and backed a Litterbug campaign, which was very successful in achieving a cleaner campus. IN TER-CLUB COUNCIL Inter-Club Council is made up of one member from each of the organiza- tions and clubs around the campus. Inter-Club is working to unite, more closely, the clubs cmd organizations and to represent the school in the Student Council. The two main activities of, Inter-Club this year were: The planning of the Homecoming Game activities and working with the Commissioners on the Clean-up campaign. All members of FHA, a club for girls interested in homemakinq. have enjoyed a full list of activities this year. The club started off with the initiation of all new members. Some of the social events of the year were the box social, sock hop, and skating party. All of these were shared with the Future Farmers. In November representatives were sent to Asilomar to attend the State Convention. The main project this year was the baking and selling of fruitcakes before Christmas. Christmas was celebrated by spending an evening pulling taffy, playing games, and dancing with FFA boys. ln the spring, the El Centro chapter members were hostesses to the other FHA chapters in this section, when they visited our campus for the Section Convention. The session lasted for one Week. The girls were' financed by student body funds. They believe that the money was Well spent, since it provided more variety at pep rallies. Another change was the uniforms. The cheerleaders had short-skirted outfits for the warm season as usual, but for their second outfit they chose long skirts-the first cheerleaders in the Valley to do so-to wear with their sweaters. Besides leading the cheering section at games and pep rallies, the cheer- leaders-marched with the band in the Christmas Parade and the Carrot Carni- val Parade. -F' C px .Ng J D ' N 5 - Q3 1 First row: Phyllis McEuen, Anita Fouts.
