Brzoczx C. li. SoNIzs O. G. Holwra j. W. DoNoHUrz D. G. WHlTFl,AW TRUSTEES PI'Cf.filIC'7ll Clerk I Central owes a great deal of thanks to the five men on her Board of Trus- tees. These able men have managed the school wisely, and have made our school and campus more beautiful as well as rnore practical. In the chain of our school system they form the in- dispensable link that connects the School to the community. Through their efforts, difficult school problems have been solved, and not only the students' but also the comrnunity's wel- fare has been ably protected. They have accomplished a great deal both for the school and for the community. Central can well be proud of this most essential part of her organization. fl4l Q STUDENTS OF CENTRAL, success and happiness to you in your journey through life! In making this wish I do not mean to imply that you must acquire riches or power. Many successful and happy persons have not possessed material wealth. Happiness is something which gives pleasure in remembrance. To succeed, one must have a worthy purpose for his life. Many people have failed, or attained only limited success, because of choosing a selfish aim. I should like for you to consider a philosophy for your lives which has been accepted and proved by thousands of people tor nearly two centuries. I refer to the plan given to us by Iesus ot Nazareth. Through His lite and example, He taught that it is more blessed to give than to receivep that one should be more concerned with giving than with getting. He gave us the Golden Rule which teaches that we should do unto others as we would have them do unto us. He also said, He who would be greatest of all, must be servant of all. The Great Teacher in His infinite wis- dom put things in their correct relationship. Self must be submerged for the cause of humanity. Your reward will be the successful life and enduring happiness. At the beginning of the year We faced the problem of keeping up to the standard set by previous annuals, the last two of which have won the All-American award, and First Class Honor rating respectively With Mrs. Keller as adviser and Kathryne Surface as editor-in-chief an early start was made. Especially helpful were Bob Womack, group picture editor, Paul Tuchfarber, advertising manager, Ruth Riddle, indi- vidual photographs editorg leanne Burger, activities editorg Bonnie Fleming, art editor, and Dan ludd, who assisted in several departments. f46l 1 I Not arranging an effective style of lay- outs, but balancing the budget, selling ads, and keeping finances straight were a few of the jobs of the business staff of La Solana this year. Besides conducting an intricate ad- vertising campaign throughout the city, the financiers also carried on an effective and powerful selling contest. Under the direction of Tomie Sue McChristy, sales manager, tour salesmen from each class were chosen to sell La Solanas. To the class that sold the most annuals was given a ten dollar prize. After a two-week campaign the sopho- mores came through to claim the prize by selling ll9 year books. With Helen Dowd as general business manager, Paul Tuch- farber as advertising manager, and Tomie Sue McChristy as sales manager, The La Solana under the advisership of Mr. C. W. Martin was a financial success. 1--V Top row: Daniels Swerdfegct' Dtiliois ucid Plc-mom McC.1slin Neves Burke Dunn V.inSIyck Horne Mr Martin Rhodes Trickett Riddle McC.hristy Horton Rapson Yamashitii McC.ulin Peddicurd Maddux Nuffer Mftquar Moody Fiore Moore Blacknrd Russell Kirkpatrick Benton Hamerson Bloch l47l l 1 4.-l Rztpson Kirkpatrick Lee Mr. Kcrchcn Lively Saunas Burke DuBois Russell Moody Rhodes Dnmron COUNCILORS I The council is a democratic legislative body, composed of eleven students, striving to further the best interests of the school. The work of the councilors is important and far-reaching. They decide the nature of many entertainments, pass on plans, run all busi- ness meetings of assemblies, and discuss and attend to the various problems which arise in school life. Each officer, elected by the student body, has a special duty to per- form. The president, vice-presidents, and secretary are in charge of student body elec- tions and help other officers in the perform- ance of their duties. The commissioners of boys' and girls' welfare secure outside jobs for students wishing them. The commissioner of finance is the school treasurer. The ath- letic manager checks the eligibility lists and Works with the coach on the interschol- astic activities. Publicity manager publicizes any student body functions. Commissioner of halls and grounds takes care of any dis- turbances on the premises and supervises the keeping of halls and grounds clean, and the house manager sees that all school equipment is clean. i481 c R l Having completed another year of service and achievement, the Warrior Nomad, official school paper, has again filled an important place in the life of Central. lt has succeeded in providing an effective and representative instrument of ex- pression and information for the combined stu- dent bodies of the high school and junior college. This year the Warrior Nomad staff was supervis- ed by Miss Florence E. Vanna, new journalism instructor. The traditional high ideals of the pa- per were held in continuance, a standard size bi- weekly publication was maintained throughout the year, and several steps were taken to mod- ernize the paper and make it more interesting to the students. A special six page senior play is sue, illustrated with cuts, was published: stream- line headlines were introduced, an innovation which improved the appearance of the paper: new feature columns including Behind the Desk, Double Dribble, and Drop Kicks were added. Other activities in which the El Centro Future Farmers take part are the two Regional Conferences which are held in Oc- tober and lanuary of each year, the annual Los Angeles Livestock Show where four delegates are sent each year, the Father and Son Banquet which is held each year in April or May, the State Conference, and the State Final Iudging Contests, held May 5, 6, and 7 at the California Polytechnic School in San Luis Obispo, at which lack Adams Won the State Championship. l52l ,...qv4 c C Every Future Farmer who is regularly en- rolled in agriculture must carry at least one project during each school year. The boys are encouraged to select one type of project and keep that type throughout their entire course in agriculture. Among the outstanding projects that were carried on this past year were swine projects which were developed by a large number of the boys, dairying projects which included approximately ten dairy animals, eleven and one halt acres of truck crops which were made up of such vegetables as carrots, tomatoes, squash, and cucumbers. These pro- jects were carefully judged, and the best ot them were entered in the annual project con- test, a state-wide event. When the project re- ceipt tigures were totaled at the end ofthe year, they were found to be greater than the receipts for the school year of l935-36. .wi .mv -M .famous-av--J ' ,,, ',!9, sw Russell Tsujnnntu R. They've done it again-put over one of their biqqest years. Althouqh they were slow in starting, they climaxed the season with a bana- up initiation and the traditional formal done-up differently. The initiation was carried out very cleverly with the pledges dressed in clothes made of aunny sacks. After a strenuous day of kneelina and saying, Allah, lonq live G. A. C. , every time an old member came into view, the pledges were taken to the desert where a beautiful im- pressive ceremony was held around the camp fire. This initiation increased the membership to twenty-five. The G. A. C. formal was one of the outstandina social events on the school calendar. The theme, Youth, Sprinq, Romance, was car- ried out in the invitations, proqrams, and decora- tions. l 54 fl O Now in its sixth year, the Varsity C club is one of Central's most active, grow- ing organizations. The club requires of its members outstanding achievement in one of the major sports-football, basketball, baseball, and track. The aims of the or- ganization are expressed in year-round activities to encourage sportsmanlike in- terest in athletics. This year's principal activities included a sport dance and ath- letic exhibitions at the student body carni- val of March 19. Club members also hoped that by their selection of bronze belt buckles instead of the usual Spartan pin as official insignia, they might dis- courage feminine souvenir-hunters. Offi- cers who directed the Varsity C through this year, were president, Ernie Zinn, vice- president, Carroll Smith, secretary, Elmo Thibodeauxp and treasurer, Robert Bal- lou. After success- fully Winning tournaments from both Brawley and Holtville, the Spartan netters lost the first encounter with the border school. The brilliant playing of the girls, however, won the second tournament with the south-enders, tying the two schools for first place. This necessitated a playoff Cwhich has not been played to clate.D Although the girls have been the stronger half of the team this year, the boys have held their own against heavy competition, most of their matches run- ning three sets. Central has the opportunity, this year, io keep permanently the round-robin championship cup which has been in her possession the past two years. The team, next year, will be greatly handicap- ped by the loss of eight seniors, Hatch, Birkhouser, Nuffer, Dowd, Horne, Free, Roberts, and Iudd.
