4 Owe az ,am 46 exege- s 5' 0 The institution now known as Central State University origl noted with an act passed by the Ohio General Assembly on March 19, 1887, establishing a Combined Normal and Industrial Department at Wilberforce University which had been founded before the Civil War. Although associated with Wilberforce University, the Department was consicl ered a separate institution with its own Board of Trustees. ln 1941, the General Assembly expanded the Combined Normal and Industrial Department, which offered two- year courses, into the College of Education and Industrial Arts, which provided four-year college programs. In 1947, the College of Education and Industrial Arts be gan operating independently from Wilberforce University. lt continued its programs in teacher education, industrial arts and business, and also began offering a four-year llberal arts program under the name Wilberforce State College. In 1951, the legislature provided the name Cen tral State College and in November, 1965, Central State was granted university status.
