W.,?,,. . I . Wm' Samuel Julius McLean was born to john Edward and Amelia McLean in Douglas, Georgia. He entered the once operated Haines Institute of Augusta, Georgia. Following his graduation from high school he came to Charlotte, North Carolina and entered johnson C. Smith University College of Liberal Arts. He completed his formal college training for the A.B. degree in 1936. He entered the Theology Seminary at john- son C. Smith and was licensed to preach the gospel in 1938 and ordained by the Presbytery of Catawba in April 1939. In 1940, he was Commissioner to the General Assembly of the United Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, Missouri. ln May of the year, he received the B.D. degree, after which, he became pastor of Loves Chapel Presbyterian Church in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. While serving in these churches he matriculated at Co- lumbia University where he received the M.A. degree in Religious Education. In 1953, he was called as pastor of the Brandon Presby- terian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. While serving the Brandon field, .he did further study at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1960, he was awarded the Masters of Education degree from the above named university. He also completed residence require- ments for the Ph.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh. In 1955 he served as moderator or the Synod of Catawba. He was active in the Presbytery of Catawba in various capacities. He served as president of the Charlotte Day Nursery in 1963andwas re-elected for the 1964 term. He was of signifi- cant service to the Boy Scouts and spear -headed the inter- racial-weekend camps at the Brandon United Presbyterian Church. He served on the Mayor's Friendly Relations Com- mittee. There can be added to these events of his life a number of varied activities of service to humanity. His con- tributions to the church will be far-reaching in the future of the community which he served. 11
