For three months these three words greeted us in the wee sma, hours of the morning. We went to bed at night with the full knowledge that the bugler would not forget first call, with the. knowledge that the morrow,s program would be as stiff as any and that we would wake in the morning with someone shout- ing rise and shinef' But woe be unto him who blows first call from now on. First calls are history. We are parted from them, we hope forever. Bunks In-Bunks Out. Being in the mood of k- ing, we feel inclined to the belief that no man in he 24th company, or in the entire 5th battalion for the mat- ter of that, will ever forget the days of the 4'flu quaran- tine and the resulting bivouac. Of course the humorous side was bound to appear-it just simply had to-and'.itS. coming was found in the cadence and precision with which we moved our bunks first outside, then inside, the cause of the regular and methodical changes in sleeping quarters being the frequent visits of one J. Pluvius. Never before had our nocturnal activities been so completely and absolutely regulated by J. P. Did he so decree we had an interrupted period of rest-not a full night's sleep as we understand it, but rather a short intermission from taps to reveille, which intermission, by the way, was always lamentably short. As we started to say, did old I. P. decree that it was not healthy for us to sleep out- side, or for any reason did he decide to pay us a visit, it was a case of bunks in. Then when Old Sol decided ill V ll 24311 r xml, VI V, 1, .L WW 3.45. 5.:1'1. 1.1. . ,. :- ..w,g ., sii'llE'llll Il l ll itll ' ii. lr .li' 7:- l'l gf,- ' ll ,Q lliii ' uw V l :fi lliggzglll l 5 f .,., 1' 11- :m.'s'. x f., X. To us the whole thing seemed to be a little scrap between the famed Old Sol and J. P., with us play- ing the role of the goats. What puzzled us most, how- ever, was that the visits of J. P. were nearly always made about the convenient hour of 3 a. m. Get That Step-One, Two, Three, Four. That mel- ody still rings in our ears, and we believe will continue to ring for a long time. Keeping the step wasn't such a terribly hard job, except when the 'cpee-wees of the 11-th platoon were in the lead. But when they were, oh, boy, the fellows in the lst and 2nd platoons sure had some job in keeping from walking over them. Those dwarfs certainly had a vague idea of what a thirty-inch step means. Then it was that the officers were always bawling out: 'cGet that step, you in the lst and 2nd platoons. But that is all over now, and things we sometimes said about the other fellows in the company are forgotten. uSteady, On-n-n-n Guargetemuptherelu It made no difference how hot, cold or otherwise it was, when Mr. Instructor said, Hget 'em up there, he meant every word of it. Together with Hbehind you, 'cout of my sight,', six feet off the ground. Mon your opponent's rifle, iight, fight, show some fight,'7 udown like a tigerv and several and kindred other phrases, Hsteady, on-n-n-n guard, will always bring memories of the bayonet run of the C.
