He was casting about for a f designation suitable for the aggregation he was saving to make an especially excellent company. He found that the man at the adjoining desk had already called one company the 22nd, and, having studied Cap- tain Glenn's practical arithmetic, he settled upon twenty- three as our company designation. So he sent out the thrifty thirty-two with their coffee money, to make pre- liminary arrangements. Upstairs, downstairs, across the way, and repeat, we thoroughly renovated both buildings for the rest of the company. Being fresh from the envi- rons of dear old Ordnance Training Camp, the 'ffeelv of the broom and the mop was no novel sensation except to the editors and the top kickers and the personnelers and unit supply officers. But right industriously have we applied ourselves to pressing down our butts fno reference to sitting down, because that isnit being done herel , and covering in file, and falling in and out with and without rifles and packs and sketching boards. And though some of us want to carry two blankets, O. D. heavy, and two pairs of shoes, russet, marching, and three suits of Munsingwear, and a couple of bath towels, in a light pack, and one blanket and an air pillow in a heavy pack, and some chew gum in ranks, others of us shave off our scraggly mustaches before they are singed off, and say nothing very quietly most of the time. x X But whether it be Woreshore explaining the psychol- ogy of dirt and paper, or Carroll telling the cock-eyed world about it, or Wallerstein giving physical exercise, or Jimmy Butler's bayonet face, or Candidate Taylor asking a question, or Personal Direction Hines appoint- ing himself on a committee, or O'Leary calling Kilgallon for the daily pilgrimage to the Hostess House, we have been the same brotherly crew, each to the other an enemy within the company, but united against all other compa- nies and battalions when it comes to the weekly assaults on the strong points established at intervals on the exam papers by the Senior Instructor. The melancholy days are fast approaching, the sad- dest of the year, so far as the leaves are concerned. We, not being leaves, are exceedingly happy at the prospect of uleavinggv though that parting from our beloved mess sergeant will be hard, not half as hard, however, as we would like to make it. When we can get up and build our own fires and buy our own clothes and pay our own grocery bills and work for a boss who is liable to fire us any time, we will miss the fire guard and the supply ser- geant and the army cooks and the difficulty of getting the little old white certificate of discharge. And by the time all the parties are over, that the New Yorkers are prom- ising themselves, they at least will be ready to settle down to a routine about as irksome as C. O. T. S., though not subject to shrill whistles and sharp commands. And we will welcome the summer maneuvers and that picnic-like stay at some genial summer resort like Camp MacArthur, as we welcome the coming of twins, or reveille on Mon- day mornings.
