T. S. I remember well last Summer at Camp Dix I was a hummer And decided a commission I would win, But the day I landed here they instilled in me a fear ' Of their awful inquisition, called a Skin. Oh, the Skin! Skin! Skin! Holy Smoke! I'm getting thin! It is causing me to feel that I'm all in. I drill hard and do my part, but the thing that breaks my heart Is that idea of the devil's, called a Skin. There's a list twelve inches long of the things that I do wrong, But not a word of what I do that's right. Our lieutenant sees my rifle, slightly dusty, just a trifle, But he skins me then and there with all his might. For inspection I am ready-shaved and shined-my hands are steady, Not a move from me. I vow, Today, no Skin. But although I know it not, on my shirt there is a spot Where a little O, D button should have been. Oh, the Skin! Skin! Skin! Always does it enter in, And the way it spoils my record is a sin. As a soldier I am good, if the system only would Abolish for all time that awful Skin. I have studied hard and tight, full two hours every night, ' And get cock-eyed reading books, both thick and thin, My exams I know are good, cause they told me where I stood, But I'm the Patsy when they give a Skin. If from here by any chance I can make the line in France, By the Gods, I'l1 make some Heinies rue their sins. All the stimulant I'll need to give my bayonet its speed Will be mem'ries of those awful Gordon Skins. Oh, that Skin! Skin! Skin! I just know I'll never win That little golden bar, so small and thin A buck private they will make me, .the replacement camp will take me, And Ill always curse that everlasting Skin. -Candidate W. P.
