Most important among these was the battalion's theatrical offering, which was a vaudeville bill on which appeared representatives of all companies. The battalion show was given on the night of Novem- ber 22nd, at the Liberty Theatre, Camp Gordon. It was a chilly, rainy night-a beastly night to beout-but nevertheless the show was attended by practically all of the men in the battalion. h The program was as follows: Candidates Basso, Starling, Coker, McWilliams, Butler, .J ,,. 5'!LL'! Bti N' J, gx,, ,,l,-.il...-.-. --..--....g . -. V N, --1, Y -Wy 7 ' W . C.O.T.5. Qbfficers' in Qlummanh at Qllnse uf Qluurse An unusually large number of officers had a part in the training of the men of the Fifth Battalion. Many changes occurred during the four months of the course. The battalion was organized with Major Louis H. Cook as battalion commander. Major Cook was suc- ceeded on October 23rd by Major Oliver F. Spencer. On December lOth Major Spencer was succeeded by Major N. A. Komer, who commanded the First and Third Bat- talions in the C. O. T. S. Major Komer graduated both of these Battalions and at the time of assuming command of the Fifth was in command of the Sixth Battalion, which command he retained. On December 10th Major Joseph B. Duke succeeded Major Ralph J. Gingrich as senior instructor. Captain Frank B. Mahoney became assistant senior instructor. Captain John F. Glenn became assistant battalion com- mander and First Lieutenant James Jones, battalion ad- jutant. On October 23rd, after the first six weeks training, numerous changes were made throughout the companies. Reference to these changes is made in the company histories. On the second day of December the 22nd and 26th companies were merged with the 24th, and the men of the 23rd company were transferred to the 25th. The 24th and 25th companies retained their old of- ficers until December 10th. On that date the 24th lost all of its officers. Captain John F. Brinson, formerly of the 26th, commanded the company until December l9th, when Captain Philip Doddridge assumed command, Cap- tain Brinson, however, remaining with the company. The other officers assigned to the company were: lst Lieut. James J. Durr, lst Lieut. Teddy Langlais, lst Lieut. Er- shell W. Campbell, lst Lieut. Henry E. Parrett, 2nd Lieut. Robert L. Crisp, 2nd Lieut. Sidney W. Barr, 2nd Lieut. Henry J. Crowderand 2nd Lieut. Gilbert J. Sevier. Captain Marshall R. Diggs, commanding the 25th from its origin, remained in command of that company. The other officers were: lst Lieut. A. Noble Ladd, lst Lieut. Cecil Barlow, lst Lieut. John E. McCammon, lst Lieut. Merwin J. Phelan, 2nd Lieut. Francis E. Dinsmore, 2nd Lieut. Douglas Graham, 2nd Lieut. Otto A. Kilmarx and 2nd Lieut. John Weckerling. The editor regrets that there are a few officers who had a part in the training of the men in the Battalion, whose photographs, due to unavoidable circumstances, do not appear in HTHE SHAVETAIL7, It was the desire that photos of all appear herein. The rosters show the way the companies were con- stituted on November 27th. The platoon pictures show the men in the various companies on the same date. The oflicer groups, too, were taken at that time. i .v v gl I, I, ,J 1' f . 'I
