I PRIVATE CENTRAL METHODIST COLLEGE NO THOROUGHFARE i foreword. There ' s a sign in Fayette, Missouri and it reads Central Methodist College established in 1854. It ' s a funny thing about signs, they ' re always popping up in unexpected places — saying Slow Down, No Smoking Allowed, or Quiet, People are Studying. Not all signs are restricting though, some of them relay happy messages — Visitors Welcome, Free Art Exhibit in the next room, or Classes Will Not Meet Today. Speech is also a sign; while it is not a visible symbol, it stands for many inward messages that initiates as much physical action as the stop sign on the corner. In a way, CMC ' s campus can be classified as a sign. It represents years of study, hard work, and companionship; it is a sign of the times of every generation who has studied within its ivy walls. Sometimes at night, if you ' re very quiet, you can hear a rustling in the trees, as if the leaves are echoing the thoughts of many students of today and of years gone by... We walked hand in hand through the chill of the autumn night and the warmth of college years spent protected us. We walked hand in hand through the chill of the autumn night and the signs of approaching winter frosted the trees. We walked CMC, you and I, and happiness and sadness were our companions through the halls of the house of knowledge. Signs are everywhere — and here , on the following pages are signs of this time.
