,iw 1 U- il in I Mid-da and Early Afternoon Shock of day! The harsh glare of the white-orange sun beats down steadily, steadily on the hot earth. The farmer pauses, wipes his foreheadg but sensing the deeper implications of his day's work, he continues persistently steering down the endless rows of fields. Shock of day! The intense light of afternoon leaves few corners unprobed, and the sharp geometric patterns and designs ofthe sweltering city stand outlined in stark relief. Behind the walls of the sweating buildings, heads bent in deep concentration reflect the seriousness of the work to be finished. In the field the farmer shades his eyes and looks at the sun as it descends the rounded curve of blue above him, Only fleetingly, he feels an excited calm-- a sense of accomplishment as he looks back over the long field already crossed and suddenly thinks of his return home. Then, doggedly, determinedly, he sets his face toward the last long section of his day's work. It must be finished well. The harvest will come. The office seems to work up to one final feverish pitchg and then, almost without warning, the great machines roar their last, Whir to a halt, and die. Hundreds of workers surge out of the buildings onto the warm pavement, Many head for home and the life that is really life for them.Tired?--alittle, but they are richer for the day's experience knowing the feeling of fulfillment--the reward of having done. Minute by minute, the giant city beats down to a slower pace. The round red-orange ball of fire moves toward the horizon, and the altered city once again takes on the hue of nature glowing in the orange-pink light of sunset. I ,The farmer finishes the last of his work and makes his way back down the road to the white house. Over the fields and valleys the penetrating colors of day meet and blend into the rich tones of evening, and the thoughts of the glaring mid-day, though not forgotten, seem to harmonize with the mystic charm of evening, Slowly, slowly the land becomes hushed--majestic in-the serenity ol' early night. The hues of blue, violet, and purple gradually blend into the deep ink-blue of night. A single star lies caught in this velvet mesh of color between day and night, but others must come, The large half-moon slowly rising in the east outlines many paths through the shadowy woods, and from the depths of a distant forest the inquisitive voice of a small white-faced owl demands, 'Whoo XX ho'7 Xi ho Meanwhile the whole viorld settles back to await the promise of fresh beginnings mth the coming of dawn ' I ,' ' on . - , A . . . .
