Dawn From somewhere the raucous call of the early morning watcher grates through the cool, moist airg and shades of pearl gray, suspended in mist, push their way up over the horizon mingling with the receding line of night. Expectant, hushed, the land lies anticipating the act of dawn. Slowly the sounds of earth are reborn. Excited conveys of twittering birds wobbly stretch on morning feet, flutter their wings, and take their day's first flight into the blue-gray sky. With the vigor of a fresh beginning, they dart back and forth, purposeless, waiting for the warmth of the sun. Nestled in a valley, a clean white farmhouse begins to show the faintest signs of life, and soon a farmer opens the picket gate and moves down the road to his fields. In the city the sharp patterns and lines of the endless rows of buildings lie softened in the dewy light of dawn. Lying there like one huge inactive machine, it waits to be roused by the turn of a knob, the push of a button, and the flip of a switch. At the horizon, subtle hints of rose appear, and gradually the cool minted colors of morning--liquid orange, pale yellow, and shell blue-- veil the panorama of the sleeping city in misty unreality. Back on the country-side, the sun edges over the horizon, and the slightest hint of a breeze passes through the grass whispering, What comes? What comes? I l l l Morning ...And the great sprawling city swings into motion--pulsing with activity, throbbing with life--as the millions of tiny ant-people converge on the buildings. The morning sunlight, sifting through longitudinal Wisps of White industrial smoke, wipes the mist-filled air from the faces of the buildings leaving them to stand sharp and clean-cut with a just-scrubbed kind of beauty, Still refreshed, each takes up his work with purpose, and the complex interaction of the busy, social, How's the weather '? World grinds into high gear. A Rich Vyellows, clear blues, lively oranges, and Vibrant greens blend into thefmorning 'scene of country life. The last drop of dew glistens from the petal- folds of a rose where it still lies hidden from the rays of the sun, and the fields and- hills lie green and vital in the heady freshness of morning. The whole landscape seems to chuckle with the increasing warmth of day, In the valley, , the farmer begins to plow his fields. The city pace whirls on. The typewriters click faster...and faster. 6 8
