Dawn From somewhere the raucous call of the early morning watcher grates through the cool, moist airg and shades of pearl gray, suspended in mist, push their way up over the horizon mingling with the receding line of night. Expectant, hushed, the land lies anticipating the act of dawn. Slowly the sounds of earth are reborn. Excited conveys of twittering birds wobbly stretch on morning feet, flutter their wings, and take their day's first flight into the blue-gray sky. With the vigor of a fresh beginning, they dart back and forth, purposeless, waiting for the warmth of the sun. Nestled in a valley, a clean white farmhouse begins to show the faintest signs of life, and soon a farmer opens the picket gate and moves down the road to his fields. In the city the sharp patterns and lines of the endless rows of buildings lie softened in the dewy light of dawn. Lying there like one huge inactive machine, it waits to be roused by the turn of a knob, the push of a button, and the flip of a switch. At the horizon, subtle hints of rose appear, and gradually the cool minted colors of morning--liquid orange, pale yellow, and shell blue-- veil the panorama of the sleeping city in misty unreality. Back on the country-side, the sun edges over the horizon, and the slightest hint of a breeze passes through the grass whispering, What comes? What comes?
