Classic Hall was built in 1911 as a part of the old Howard Payne College for Women. Up until this time Howard Payne Hall housed both the class- rooms and dormitory facilities. The new Classic Hall contained a number of classrooms, which were quite modern for the time, together with an auditor- ium and a gymnasium. The auditorium seated about 500 persons and was located on the second floor, while the gvmnasium took a large portion of the basement. The building, when first occupied, con- tained the English, Social Science, Foreign Language, Classic Hall and Athletic departments with the other subjects still being taught in Howard Payne Hall. The auditorium and gymnasium were both changed into classrooms with the increased enrollment after the merger of Howard Pavne and Central College. The newest improvements came last Summer when the class- rooms were painted and the halls sound proofed. Classic Hall has served well for 44 years and as Central College enters into its second century of existence it continues to serve for future generations of Centralites. i 1 '-H
