m+n+Wm1' enrrr:rq - cience gba!! The present Science Hall was constructed to replace Stephens Hall, the old science plant built in 1886 and situated where the Parish House is presently located. Science Hall re- sulted from a campaign for funds instigated by Dr. D. Hammond, D. D., President of the College. . In 1895, when Science Hall was completed, the equipment was moved from Stephens which was then torn down. The new Science Hall consisted of a basement and four upper floors. The basement floor plan was then about the same as now, but the upper floors were quite different. The large lecture room on first floor served in 1895 as a chapel and directly across from this was a lecture room. The small profes- sors' offices located at either end of the hall served then as offices for the President and Dean of the College. On, the second floor, where the museum is presently located, there was the library, and across from that was the museum. The museum, which served the pale- ontological, mineralogical, and zoological de- partments, was partially financed by a gift from Lon V. Stephens. Later the Chapel was moved to a different location as the library was ex- panded, then occupying bothits old location and the former chapel. ' , Also located in the building were class- rooms, laboratories, and three literary society halls. There was on the fourth floor a storage tank which served as a reservoir for water pumped from a spring located around Puckett Field House. . . . By 1918 the non-scientific material had been removed from the building leaving it ar ranged as it presently is with equipment valu ed at S75 000 nl X 75 as ff u v umm. .s K Nw W .mix QM fsm ft 7 lil 0 , W -.Nfl f f! 1 X47 AWN? ,M X sf I 77 5 LEW wvfi I -ir Xxx' mrs tnwlxfh , . . Classic Hall was built in 1911 as a part of the old Howard Payne College for Women. Up until this time Howard Payne Hall housed both the class- rooms and dormitory facilities. The new Classic Hall contained a number of classrooms, which were quite modern for the time, together with an auditor- ium and a gymnasium. The auditorium seated about 500 persons and was located on the second floor, while the gvmnasium took a large portion of the basement. The building, when first occupied, con- tained the English, Social Science, Foreign Language, Classic Hall and Athletic departments with the other subjects still being taught in Howard Payne Hall. The auditorium and gymnasium were both changed into classrooms with the increased enrollment after the merger of Howard Pavne and Central College. The newest improvements came last Summer when the class- rooms were painted and the halls sound proofed. Classic Hall has served well for 44 years and as Central College enters into its second century of existence it continues to serve for future generations of Centralites. i 1 '-H
