DEDICATED What is more prosaic than an oyster, though one in every million contains a pearl? Pearls are rare, but the common little oyster does its hit to give them luster worthy of their rarity. And what is more prosaic than a Ragout, though once or twice in every decade one may claim a major anniversary? This Ragout, the thirtieth edition, claims its anniversary pearl. As such, it draws from a convenient trust fund of history while Ragouts of the future await their bulky heritage. This year's is no historical volume. After a bit of the past to show how we arrived where we are, we stay in 1939 through the greater part of a Ragout before advancing for a peek at possible and probable futures. V iWe cater to the interests of today. Where they stray into the past and future, we also hope to stray.
