The distractions, that the present world unrest produces, makes that challenge even more vital. It demands of us that we discover and under- stand the fundamental principles of our civiliza- tion and democracy. By so doing, we gain a better knowledge of what it is our nation and all its allies are nighting to preserve. - Our school suggests that we meet this chal- lenge to be better Americans and better world citizens by being better citizens of Central Kitsap High. JAMES H. HUEY. Principal. Adminisfrafiau SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE The war brings into prominence our strengths and weaknesses as a people and nation, and we note the returning emphasis upon the asserted virtues of a period long past. Among these are the following: ' l. The idea of sharing alike: i. e., rationing. 2. The idea of self-sufficiency in the home, as far as possible: i. e., gardens, meat raising, etc. 3. The idea of conservation of everything useful: i. e.. time. materials and resources. 4. The idea of present sacrifices of personal comforts for loyalty to the common cause and the ultimate gain of greater security and freedom for all. 5. The idea of our responsibility for the 'welfare of children, the victims of war, and for the less fortunate everywhere. These are pretty well comprehended by Christianity and the Golden Rule. They are among the eternal virtues. and while we find them necessary in war, they are de- sirable in peace, and teachers and pupils in our public schools who would serve their country in this time of need should imbibe them. Over seventy freshmen, a group larger than in any previous year, entered C.K.H.S. in 1939 with a detennination to raise our school in citizenship, sportsmanship, and scholarship. Though this number has dwindled throughout the four years in school, the aim has at all thnes been the same. After going through the rigours of initiations, we proved our good intentions by starting the year with a Valentine's Party in February, and by taking an active part in all school activi- ties, including sports. Class presidents for the first year were Wal- lace Callow and Tom Orwiler. In our sophomore year came the glory of being the initiator in- stead of the initiated, so we took full advantage of the situation. During this year we again proved our worth by having lu class members on the Honor Society. The band, Pep Club, baton twirling, and Debate Club found many active sophomores among them. In the field of sports- Gordon Berry, Jim DeClements, Bob Gillette, Earl Greenameyer, John Munro, Tom Orwiler, Harold Rasor, Homer Schaffert, Lloyd Ulery, and Pete Welch-earned letters. Our sophomore presidents were Juanita Hampton and John Munro. Came the fall of l9Ll ! we were juniors, upperclassmen at last!! Our play, NThe Haunted High School,H was declared a success, In ad- dition to the annual Junior Prom, the theme of which was a carnival, a new fete, a Junior-Senior Banquet was given. Scholastically high, the junior class comprised over one-third of the Honor Society. Thir- teen junior boys--Lloyd Ulsry, Earl Myre, Wallace Callow, Bill Graham, John Bishop, Gordon Berry, Dennis Syltebo, Jack Haverfield, Tom Or- wiler, Jim DeClements, Jack Johnson, Bob Gillette, and Pete Welch-- earned letters in sports. Seven juniors were elected to the Service Club. lla Harmon and Ed Sund were our presidents. Starting our senior year with a bang, we achieved 1001 stamp plan membership, thus putting 'AB on the plaque with previous year classes. Our senior play, NA Letter to the General,N was presented and proved to be a great success. Five a.m. Friday, March 19, saw L7 very sleepy seniors start on their excursion. The destination, Victoria, B. C. All who went will agree that they had a day of fun and interest probably never to be forgotten. On May 30, Baccalaureate services were held for our class. with Commencement, held on June 2, we started out to take our places in the changing world. These were only a few of the orders heard on the evening of November 20, 1942, in the high school auditorium when the senior class presented its play, NA Letter to the General.n The interest in the play centered around two army pri- vates impersonating officers and trying to win the hearts of some beautiful young college girls, who were working on an entertainment for the soldiers. The three-act comedy was well directed by Mrs. Bollmann the work of the cast was equally good. The staff was made up of about twenty-five volunteer work- ers. This group of inexperienced students turned out to be one of the most efficient and capable of staffs. The proof of their ability was in the paper itself. The eight page paper was published bi-weekly during the school year. To give recognition for meritorious achieve- ments and to aid the faculty and students were two of the primary aids of the Megaphone. Through this non-credit activity, under the advisorship of Mr. E. M. Charland, journalism graduate of the University of Washington, the Megaphone developed skills in editing, typing, art work, writing, stencil cutting, assembling, and mimeographing. 'T?WQU LIBRARY During the school year of 'AZ and 'L3, fifty new books have been added to the library. Several of the books have a 1942 copyright. People Under Hitler by Wallace R. Deuel and Dogs Against Darkness by Dickson Hartwell are some examples. In addition to the quota of fifty new books, a set of WAir Education Seriesn has been acquired, which is very popular among the students. A central library for the grade schools of this dis- trict has been established at the new grade school in Silver dale under the supervision of Mrs. Bollmann. It also has received a number of new books. A new film strip of the fundamentals of library works was shown to help us in our work. Library workbooks are being used this year. The manuals consist of questions and material which should be common knowledge to the librarians upon completing the course. Though a number of experienced librarians were lost to us through graduation, a class of twelve students carry on the work. ANNUAL STAFF The ECHO is the C.K.H.S. yearbook illustrating the activities, organizations, and classes of the school for the year l9L2-L3. The posters which were made for the basketball and football games proved to be more than worth while. Silverdale Art Club made a very good showing in the County Humane Education Contest. First, second, and third prizes were won by lla Harmon, Fay Spader, and Maxine Brown. A recent event was the soap carving contest. The best carvings, those of Jack Ottestad, Fay Spader, and Delores Anderson, are on display in the showcase of the new school building. MOVIE OPERATORS Who pulled out the power cord? Who used this machine last? These are phrases likely to be heard anytime the C.K. H. movie projector is set up by the staff of student movie- eperators in the gym or the science room during the school year. The group, comprised of boys in the upper classes, gave up their time during their study halls to give the school a visual aid program for all of the classes. Much credit should be given to Mr. Karl Decker, who had charge of the program, for training the boys and for setting up the visual aid program so successfully. The operators included Robert Hood, Jim McConnell, Earl Myre, Vic Baldwin, Duane Crosier, Gordon Berry, Bill Wright, Phil Myhre, John Brewer, Tom Orwiler, Melvin Austad and Bill Rotter. GIRLS' CLUB The largest organization in C.K.H. composed entirely of girls is the Girls' Club. The only restriction about becom- ing a member is that you be a girl. All the girls in school are automatically members. , The main activity of the Girls' Club for the year was the annual dother's Tea. lla Harmon was the general chair- man for this and it was supervised by Miss Myhre, the Girls' Club advisor. The home economics classes hold a style show which completed the program for the tea. The girls elected the following officers for the year: First Semester Second Semester President----Juanita Hampton ---------- Ruth Howe Vice-Pres.---Annabelle Christiansen---Gloria Berg SGCPGtHPy ---- Ila Harmon --------------- Rose Howe Treasurer ---- Berniece Anderson -------- Phyllis Johansen BAND The l942-45 band consisted of twenty-five members. Al- though restricted in their activities because of the war, they played for assemblies, P.T.A. meetings and school plays. For the operetta the band did a quick-change act to an orchestra. ' Early in the year Mr. Brey was lost to the army, and only after some difficulty did we obtain a directress in the person of Mrs. Horsley. CHOIR The small group of sixth-period songbirds have accom- plished much under the direction of Mrs. D. A. Horsley dur- ing 1942-43. y They made their first appearance at Central Kitsap High P.T.A. in December. Later in December the band and the choir presented a Christmas Assembly. The choir played an active part in the presentation of the musical highlight' of the year, UHats Offn, an operetta which was presented in March. On Easter Sunday the choir sang at the Silverdale Metho dist Church and then they concluded a successful year by giving a special Easter Assembly. SWING BAND This is a newly organized group in Central Kitsap High, but in spite of its infancy it is a rapidly growing body. Its membership fluctuates but usually consists of about six members. LETTERMEN'S CLUB The Central Kitsap Lettermen's Club, composed of those boys who win letters in a sport, was enlarged considerably this year by transfers, and new sophomores who had won let- ters their freshman year. Pete Welch, prominent senior, was elected president, taking over past president John Sigo's job admirably. The annual Smoker sponsored by the club was not held as not enough bouts were found. Instead the club sold orange Cougar stickers to the student body. The Lettermen's Club also helped in the scrap metal drive and the cleaning up of the grounds. It was a busy year for the boys of the club, one of the biggest and busiest of its history. 1671 kvfball , FIRST ROW, left to right: Ronny Patton, jerry Sproat, Billy Shefreld. SECOND ROW: Mr. Smith.
