THE rowen, was Girls' Athletics BY DOROTHY CORNEAL On May ninth a play day was held at Poly stadium in which all the junior highs of the city took part. Teams from Chemawa, University and Central competed in baseball, volleyball and basketball. Every grade had two girls' teams picked from a group that signed up for practices. Girls on the teams displayed splendid school spirit by wearing red and white dresses. A combination of this and fine cooperation helped in making the results for the day a tie, with each school winning three games. hliss hiorgan was the play day chairman of the girls' division. Ninth grade baseball results, in a close game with Chemawa and Central, were 19-16 with Chemawa the victors. Central's teams consisted of: Amelia Baird, first base and captain, Sonia T Wight, catcher, Caryol Long, pitcher , Faye Kreigh- baum, second base, Billy Doster, third base, Thelma Buck, short stop, Bennet Goodwin, first fielder, Evelyn McNeill, second fielder, Bonnie Cripper, third fielder, Thelma hiorelock, Mercedes Buhr and Launia Baker, substitutes. University was victorious in the ninth grade volleyball game with Central. The first game was University's with a score of 15-7. Central won the second 9-15 and the final game was University's with the score 15-8. Those on the ninth grade volleyball team were: Eva hlapes, captain, Frances Burke, Doris Egbert, Dorothy Corneal, Evelyn Schwartz, Lucy Kim, Doris Ross, Monica VVaters, Lois Jensen, lvinona Dugan, Lova Barber, substitutes. Central was the victor for the eighth grade volleyball winning the first two games played with a score of 15-Q and 15-11. The team consisted of: Frances Stephen- son, captain, Ella Plumb, Frances DeCow, lVIarion Thompson, Eleanor N ishimoto, Edith Clark, Alice Read, Blanche Knight, Lucille Sharp, Jean Pearse, Elaine Anderson, May Ohno, substitutes. ' In the seventh grade Central played University in indoor baseball, winning 6-4. Those who made up the team were: Georgia Goodwin, captain and pitcher, Emily Unland, catcher, Joe L. Brand, first baseman, Ellen Read, second base, Eva Waddle, third base, Mary Ham, short stop, Jane Cravens, first field, Teresa Martinez, second field, Evelyn Coulter, third field, Jane Skelley, Betty, Jack, Lorene Kuehl, Martha Frary, Catalina Solorio, substitutes. Chemawa was the victor for the seventh grade basketball game With a score of 9-6. Girls on Central's teams were: Mary lVIori, captain, Edith Cornelius, Naomi Mitchell, ltiargaret Richards, Evelyn Pena, Annamae Johnson, Alice Easterday, Genevieve Raymer, lvlargaret Lichty, Lucille Hightower, substitute. The eighth grade also won their basketball game by a score of 18-8. The mem- bers of the team were: Camilla Vilaters, captain, Anne Weatherhead, Marjorie Hamilton, Viola Thomas, Keitha Simpson, Evelyn Hightower, Candida Rametti, Wilma Clay, Jeanette Strippel, ltlary Jane Moulton, Maude Coulter, substitutes. CJHS The girls' physical education classes have been working hard this year on various sports. Elimination tournaments were played off in each grade to determine which section were the champions for their grade. After several basketball games the nine A-B class won the ninth grade champion- ship. In the eighth grade after a close game with the G's the D section proved victorious. Seventh grade champions were the H-I sections. A game of hit-pin baseball between the E a11d A sections left the E's ninth grade champions with a score of 28-20. The 8 D's were again the victors when they beat

THE TOWER, 1930 Bo yls Athletics p During the school year the coaches have carried on an intensive athletic program for the boys. There have been inter-section and interclass contests in all major sports, football, soccer, basketball, track, indoor baseball, and nine inch base- ball. In all of these games, except in track where the freshies took last place both times, the ninth grade has proven itself superior. In football the F, G and H sections won in the 7th, 8th and 9th grades respectively. The eighth grade won their game from the seventh, and met the ninth grade headed by Earl Barham as captain, on October 21. The eighth grade played heady ball but the ninth grade was greater in weight and experience, and they consequently Won out. On December 4, W'ednesday, the Central football team met the Chemawa team. The game was well at.tended by the student body. Central dropped the game to their opponents by the score of 6-7. In soccer results were somewhat differentg the 7 E 8 A and 9 C winning in their grades. The seventh graders surprised everybody and Won their game from the eighth grade by a dropkick. The score was 5-4. The ninth grade easily Won their game with the seventh grade on Janaury 27. . Basketball honors were hotly contested, with the 7 E, 8 E and 9 C Winning out after somewhat of a struggle. The interclass championship was played between the eighth and ninth grade 011 lNIarch 25. The game was a close one, the final score being 16-15 in the freshies' favor. Billy Peterson captained the ninth grade and Kenneth Powell the eighth grade. Indoor baseball proved less interesting to the student body. The ,7 I, 8 D and 9 F sections won out in their respective grades. On April 16 the ninth grade de- feated the eighth grade to the tune of 5-3 for the interclass championship. The schedule for the nine inch baseball games were arranged differently. The new system gives each section a chance to play every other section in its grade. In the other games, after a team was defeated it could play no more in the cham- pionship race. In track the lower grades responded well, but the Freshies had but a few men out. The Junior Olympics plan was used entirely. At the play day on May 9, the boys showed the training that the coaches had been giving them, they carried off second honors. At physical education period, the sections are formed into teams, and they prac- tice together getting used to playing in their own team. The coaches included fundamentals in some of their work. To all boys playing on the inter-section champion team, and to all boys that have made a point for their school in inter-school activities, and to the two boys who make the highest number of points in the Junior Olympics in their class, goes an athletic HC . the G's, 20-8. Seventh grade champions were the H-I's after a game with the B's5 the score being 20-10. The nine D's and F's played for the championship in volley ball with the D's winning two out of three games. Wlhen the 8 D's played the 8 F 's they still retained their record and not only won the eighth grade championship but that of the school. Seven G's and F's final game resulted in the victory of the G's. Several classes also played speed ball for a short time. The baseball season has just started and no tournaments have been played.
