Central must keep pace with the ever-progressing educational system of a fast growing population The job of starting Central on its next fifty years belongs to our new principal, Mr. Walter McGregor. Although he is new to Central, Mr. McGregor is not new to the Kansas City, Kansas School system. He has eight years' experience at Northwest Junior High School both as a teacher of Mathematics and a counselor. Mr. McGregor's educational background includes an undergraduate degree from Kansas State College of Pitts- burg and a graduate degree from the University of Kansas. The students know Mr. McGregor as a firm but a fair man. The faculty know him as an able leader and a good friend. At any rate, the name of McGregor will certainly mean as much to the future of Central as the names of Schlagle, Johnson and Shankland mean to the past. E111 Qsppreniaiinn It is not easy to compile the history of a school especially when that school is fifty years old. ln the following pages you will find a fairly concise and com- prehensive history of Central Junior High School. This history is the work of Miss Nellie McGuinn. Miss McGuinn, is a former teacher in the public schools of this city, and she has made ahobby out ot compiling histories of local institutions. We are very grateful to her for the history she has compiled of Central and for the permission to reprint this history in our yearbook. A great deal of Work has gone into the preparation of this history and everyone at Central is deeply indebt- ed to Miss McGuinn for preserving the past events of our school. The editorial staff EEQEEIEIFFIEI E EEE : In 1916 It Looked This Way! It may come as a surprise to some of you to know that when this school was planned fifty years ago in 1915, it was considered quite an innovation, a novelty, in fact, more or less an experiment. It was to be the only school of its kind west of the Mississippi River and one of fewer than a hundred in the entire country. There were several reasons Kansas City was chosen as a site for a jun- ior high school. Mr. M. E. Pearson, superintendent of schools, had taught in the city since 1886 and had been superintendent since 1902. He knew the people and what they needed from their schools. He had felt for a long time that the rigid academic curriculum ofthe seventh and eighth grades had too little appeal for the ordinary boy. Kansas City, he said, was an industrial city, and most of its young peo- ple planned to go into industry, not into a profession. An industrial high high school was his dream, but an impractical one. When Mr. Pearson studied the setup of the new intermediate schools, known as junior high schools, he felt he had found the solution to the problem of holding children in school until at least the ninth grade. So by this dream of 1915, the project was under way. .I VV . W .,!,,, ,,. -y--1 Aa. 1 4 ' 1 ' mvlv' lf .,. When the building was finished, Vifhittier would occupy one wing. The work was completed by the following spring of 1916. To celebrate its completion and introduce the school to every citizen, the most gigantic Open House in the history of the schools here was held. From May 8 to May 15, educational week was celebrated. A special booklet was issued with the cover picture labeled Whittier Junior High School. In the 25 rooms and the combined auditorium and gym were placed exhibits from every school in the city. There was special entertainment every afternoon and evening. Graduating Qllass nf 1917 THE CURRICULUM There were six courses offered--English, English-German, English- Latin, Industrial Arts, Household Economics and Business. Miss Emma Schaich, still living, and Miss Bertha Shall taught the first English-German classes. There were, besides F. L. Schlagle, on first faculty, people such as Cessna and Kirk Miller, Eva Hanna, Margaret Hyde, Flora Helwig, Emma Vanous, Mildred Spake, Helen Rose and Ruth Brown tTaylorD. All of these contributed to the school's immediate success. The first graduating class, in 1917, had 143 members. The first principal of the school was I-I. P. Shepherd. Mr. Pearson selected 25 experienced teachers from all over the city for the first faculty, in order to give the school a good start. Seventh, eighth and ninth grade children from eight schools in the west and southwest sections of the city, south of Central Avenue, enrolled in the new school. The eight schools were Riverview, Prescott, John J. Ingalls, John Fiske, Whittier, Park, Morse and Oakland KL. M. Alcottl. Unfortunately, the wing reserved for the Vifhittier children was almost immediately filled with junior high students. Early reports vary as to the number of students enrolled that first year. Portables soon clustered around the main building, built as they were needed for the Whittier children. THE FIRST YEARS On May 5, 1920, a moving picture machine was installed. This was the only school in the city to own such a machine. The school's oldest organization, the Student Council, began in 1921, when pupils were trained for various duties and leadership in school activities. Wayne F. Shaw, former superintendent at Alma, Kansas, was elected the second principal of the school in August, 1921 after principal H. P. Shepherd left to become the high school principal at Lincoln, Nebraska. He organized a Latin course. ln 1920 and 21, a new bond election promised a new building and en- largement of the junior high school. ln April, 1922, the Whittier children moved from their portables into a fine new building. Two of their teachers, Miss Lena Feigner and Miss Hazel Wilson, later joined the junior high faculty. In 1922, a meeting was held to organize a Parent-Teachers' Associa- tion. The first teachers joining were Misses Hulda Pearson, Ruth Maher, Eula Bridger, Selma Wall and Emma Vanous. THE TWENTIES BROUGHT CHANGES In 1923, Northwest and Northeast Juniors were established. No longer one of a kind, Whittier was renamed, on April 23, 1923, to Central Junior High School. By 1925, Standardized Tests had been given to all children under the direction of Mr. Russel Wise, efficiency expert. In 1927, the north and south sections of the main building were added, the gymnasium lengthened and balconies added to accommodate the increas- ing services and enrollment. John- son, became Assistant-Superintendent. On March 3, 1934, the high school at ninth and Minnesota, was de- stroyed by fire . Until the fall of 1937, Central Junior helped by bringing in the students from the high school. The graduating class from the high school presented an appreciation gift to Central Junior. A new 16,-millimeter sound film machine was purchased and the Centralian came out in September in mimeograph form. Mr. H. A. Bill- ingsly, sponsored a larger Centra1ian , complete with crossword puzzles and pictures of the graduates. The basketball team was christened The Cubs and an emblem was designed for them in 1939. Among interesting assembly programs were athlete Glenn Cunningham and a wide variety of entertainment was offered to the children over the year. MILESTONES On November 7, 1940, a large Open House was held celebrating the 25th year of the school's founding. The main event was the dedication of the new R.C.A. public address system in use for the first time. Broadcasts were made to all the rooms and a recorded -message read from Mr. Shepherd the first principal. Mr. Fitch, music instructor, composed the Silver Anniversary and his music groups played it for the first time. The speaker was Mr. F. L. Schlagle, the first assistant principal at Central Junior. For the 1941 grad- uation exercises in the spring, Miss Santa Maria Craig wrote a pageant, The March of Democracy, in honor of the anniversary. The school rejoiced in 1944 when Mr. Schlagle was elected to the high office of president of the National Education Association, the first Kansan to achieve such an honor. Seventeen Kansas City teachers attended the meeting '? The man in the picture was C. E. Harris a plumber on Central Avenue. He often helped in the industrial arts department during the first four years. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the man who was later to become the fourth principal of this school, Mr. J. C. Shankland, made the nominating speech at the convention. In 1946, Mr. R. C. Johnson went as principal to Wyandotte High School and was succeeded by Mr. J. C. Shankland. Mr. Shankland had been assist- ant principal at Argentine High School. At the same time, Mr. Milford Crabb, music instructor, took Miss Bessie Miller's position as supervisor. Mr. James Hammer, now principal at Lowell and Central Schools, organized a Pep Band for the students. The Centralian carried news of the accounts of a favorite alumna, Lillian Murphy, and her program with the famous sing- ing star, James Melton. Miss Craig took her well-known U.N.E.S.C.O. Panel to perform at the State Teacher's meeting in 1949. Wal 'P ii li F AN EXPANDHNTG SCHOOL In 1953, Central Jr. won three Science Fair awards and Gold Keys in Art. Then in 1954, occurred an event that might have caused a serious damage. A fire broke out in the book storage room one late September day. Fortunately, it was on a Saturday, and a neighbor reported that smoke was coming from the building. There was extensive damage to the books. Contracts for a new auditorium, seating 774 persons, a sound-proof music room and library to the west of the original building were signed in the fall of 1956. The additionswere ready late in the fall of 1957, and the first assembly held in the new auditorium on .January 9, 1958, featured Mr. Stuhl, a cel- loist, from the University of Kansas. The library had opened just before Christmas. The gymnasium was converted to an industrial arts center when the new and larger one with folding doors to divide it into two rooms, for boys and girls, was completed in 1961. An honor came to Principal Shankland in February, 1958, when he was elected to the presidency of the Kansas Association of Secondary School Prin- cipals. In May, 1958, a sudden death in a car accident came to Miss Mary Ellen Parker, a long-time teacher at Central. ln 1959, Miss Nettie Davis received one ofthe Kansas Master Teacher Awards. Later, Miss Eula Bridger, also, was similarly honored. Carter Burns, personnel director, for the schools and Fred Kohl, di- rector of physical education are former teachers. Miss Ruby Crary and Mr. James Hammer are principals of elementary schools. Miss Virginia Shink- le is head of the home economics departments in junior and senior high schools. The late Paul Mitchum, mayor here for years, was one of Central's honored graduates. rf' 4' Q -1 7 2 - ' ia A' 1 ' x. 'V 2 Eg 1 . Mr. Todd has just finished his first year as a counselor while Miss Clough has been counseling for four years. The door of the counselor's offices is always open to students who seek their help. Mr. Todd and Miss Clough use their files of information, experience and know-how to help students solve the problems of school life. It is also the job of the counselors to give tests to the student body. These tests are not only used to mea- sure a students' academic progress, but also to guide him in the future. The counselors interpret the results of these tests for the students and point out to each student how he may improve. Students agree that the counselors are always a friend to turn to in a world that sometimes seems not to have any other friends. bi Brenda Perryman, Iris Winters. Steve Kraly.
