Gtrls Athletics Under the capable dxrectlon of Mrs McCrea the Glrls physlcal educatlon for this year was changed because of the war The thmg whlch IS stressed IS the bulldmg up of a glrl to make her physically Ht so that she wtll be able to stand up under the strams of the war Included ln the program are 1ntra murals whtch play a large part nn the program and wh1ch have been cn larged to the extent of mcludmg every gurl 1n the hxgh school The fall sports conslstlng of hockey and soccer were played from September untll the end of November Approxlmately one hundred and five glrls slgned up for these sports The glrls were dlvlded into seven teams wtth a Senlor as captam a umor as v1ce captam a Sophomore secretary and a Freshman manager In namlng the teams the glrls chose the names of womens colleges They were as follows Sargent Theresa Atzberger Capt W llesley Chrlstlna Farrell Capt Vas sar Frances Devme Capt Barnard Evelyn acobsen Capt Skldmore Anna Burke Capt Mt Holvoke Vlrgmna Renlly Capt Smlth Nellle lVlcCavanagh Capt These teams were to remaln permanent throughout th school year There was close competltron 1n both sports untll the final games wh1ch resulted mn Barnard captalned by Evelyn acobsen tn hrst place 1n hockey and Sm1th captalned by Nellle McCavanagh in first place 1n soccer Volleyball was started lmmedlately after Thanksglvmg vacatlon and lasted untll Chrlstmas vacatxon Sm1th Captalned by Nellxe McCavanagh was 1n FIFSE place After Chrtstmas vacatlon the long awatted sport of basketball was started It lasted unt1l Nlarch 15 Two types of basketball were played thxs year Because of the lengthening of the school day 1ntra murals wer to be played durlng gym classes One dav a week was set aslde for th1s purpose Thls was made posslble by the change wluch made gym compulsory Hve days a week I the un1orSen1or Class the W A M S captalned by Frances Devlne came ln first In the Sophomore Class the Dodgers Class The glrls declded to flnlsh out the Ultra murals after school Smlth captalncd by Nellle lVlcCavanagh won flrst place From Nlarch 15 untxl Easter vacauon doubles and slngles ln badmlnton and plng pong are belng played Following Easter vacatron softball and archery wxll be played there wxll also be inter class track meet Because of the war the gxrls have only played one 1nv1tat1on game and have attended one playday tn each major sport The Central Isllp glrls played hostesses to the East Islip and Isltp girls tn a trnngular meet ln hockey The C I Glrls came out VICIOFIOUS wmnlng the me t by defeatlng E I by a score of 4 to 0 and Isltp l to 0 The glrls attended a playday at Northport They came out vlctorxous by wlnmng all thexr games They were as follows C I l Sm1thtown 0 C I 3 Northport l C I 4 South I-Iuntxngton 0 The gurls ended thetr hockey season undefeated Central Isllp was mvxt d to a trlangular meet 1n soccer at East Isl1p The gtrls placed hrst ln the meet defeatlng E I by a score of 2 to 0 and Islxp 7 to 0 This ended the soccer season and the glrls were also undefeated 1n soccer The gtrls played hostes es to the East Isl1p glrls for a basketball gam and both of Cen tral Isllps teams came out v1ctor1ous The scores were First te m C I 35 E I I3 seco d t C I 20 E I 9 Tl g1rls attended a basketball playday at Bay Shore and came out VICIOIIOUS defeatmg the follovvlng teams Bay Shore 7 to 6 East Isl1p ll to 2 Isllp 18 to 2 Amxtyvllle 4 to 2 The gltls ended the basketball season undefeated In mterclass basketball the -Iunnors emerged VICIOFIOUS thereby securmg the mterclass banner for Room 10 agaln next year The gxrls also played softball 1n the sprmg . , . , . . , , . , . , . 7 ' T 5 I I 7 . , J . . - , , , , , . , a Q I I Q . . - . , ., e - , ., - r T U 7 'Q '1 ' ,I 9 -3 ' 1 9 ' , T .
