Togetherness The 1974 Homecoming was highlighted on October 10 by a football game at the Rubber Bowl, between the Central- Hower Eagles and South's Big Blue. The court was presented to the student body at half-time. On Saturday night, October 12, a rainbow of crepe decorations transformed the Hower gym into a romantic setting for the dance. Love ls .... , the theme for the Homecoming, was represented by posters and table decorations bearing the two familiar figures of the Love Is cartoon. The night included dancing to the music of the Carl Michael Orchestra, and a door-prize drawing for a stereo. Senior Nancy Goins was announced as homecom- ing queen, and Senior Margo Shamberger as crowner, Other members on the court were seniors: Vicki Elzholz, Cindy Johnson, and Cindy Mooney, juniors: Robin Baker, Cheryl Harmon, Sandy Myers, Dawn Nelson, and Brenda Riley, and sophomores: Phyllis Alexander, LaShawn John- son, and Pat Vorhees. Chairman of the dance, Theresa Davis, with help from Booster Club members made Homecoming a great success. 12 ACTIVITIES -all Queen Nancy Goins Crowner Margo Shamberger N Q v I If Senior Attendants Vicki Elzholz Cindy Johnson Cindy Mooney - --Q-hr ,fi V , Homecoming 1974 Junior Attendants To H -s Robin Baker Cheryl Harmon Sandy Myers Dawn Nelson Brenda Riley ..vA !s 'N 1 ' Sophomore Attendants Phyilis Alexander LaShawn Johnson Pat Vorhees ACTIVITIES 13 Student Council is an organization consisting of elected members from each class. In the spring of each year the senior cheerleaders begin their training program for prospective cheerleaders. After two weeks of hard practice, tryouts are held and six varsity and six junior varsity are chosen. The cheerleaders practice two hours a day, five days a week in the summer, and for 1V2 hours everyday after school. In addition to the practices, cheering at games, planning pep assemblies, decorating the gym, and sparking school spirit and pride are some of the duties ofa Central-Hower cheerleader. The girls must also maintain a C average. Mrs. Jennifer Waltemate is the advisor, and she feels that dedication is the number one quality a cheerleader should have. The team was young and inexperienced since there was no team last year. The city league was tough and the girls were up against teams with much experience. The games were played at different area high schools. Not only did the girls learn a lot this year, but they also had fun and met many new friends! The girls' varsity volleyball team ended its season with one win and seven losses. Their skill level was quite high but they just couldn't get it together. There were 12 girls on the team, including, five seniors, five juniors, and two sophomores. Practice was held every morning at 7:30 and after school at 3:30. Although they only won one game, the girls showed great Eagle pride and Central-Hower can certainly be proud of their efforts. The gymnastic team competed in seven city meets, a city championship meet, and a sectional meet this year. The girls com- peted on the balance beam, uneven bars, vaulting, and floor exercises, scoring points out of a possible ten points. The team gained much experience in com- pulsory and optional routines. They ended the season with two wins and five losses. E E i GYMNASTICS TEAM-Front: S. Cook, M. Doolin, D. Marked by hampering injuries and not enough personnel, the team found itself in a revamping year. A month before the first game, Forge Field was invaded by approximately 50 men seeking positions on this year's squad. For many hours a day these men lived football. They exercised, scrimmaged, ran and if there was extra time, ex- ercised some more. Much time was spent in analyzing game movies where plays were memorized and mistakes rectified for the next game, , Even though it was not a winning season, hope was never abandoned and deter- l mination was always present. 3 rl Y ., . , , l F ts t, as Eb- ,A X is Keith Miller Jerry Russell Vyilliam Richardson Kevin Turneur Flick Westfall Bob Zwisler SPORTS 43 lla, -wilwl' .A Even though the harriers ended their season with a 0- 13 record, there were some good runners on the team. A good faculty will try to instill in the students a desire for the all-important academic excellence that is a major part of their education. There are many activities and duties that involve a great deal of time on the part of the teachers and ad- ministrators. Through community service, drama productions, student council, the school year- book and newspaper, varied sports and school social events, we have learned from them how to strive for and reach our high goals, We would like to express our thanks for the help, advice, and guidance that was given us throughout the school year. '15 S aw of 0, 24,-I ffsmlcf f June, 1975, another school year ended. As usual, stuglents filed out the doors within the hour, carryi g rasers, 7 notebooks, papers, pencils, and any other junk that cluttered their lockers, leaving them nice and cle for the first time since September. Some of these students will return next fall, while others will have the opp unity to explore the business world or the world of higher education. Stiff competition, great responsibilities, and expensive education costs, all well hidden behin' t f walls of ,, a high school, will now become a part of your everyday life. But do not dismay, you are prepare to nquefl C any of these. Twelve years of education stand behind you, and if you use it wisely, with effort, the opportunity for success will be at your doorstep. You are responsible for what happens to this country for the next 50-70 years. No longer can you blame your parents or any other adult for the conditions and problems that may ariseg you're a part of it now. If there's something you don't like, be strong and speak out til you convince enough people to agree with you, so you can change it. There may be times when hard blows will hit and delay your plans for a short time, but you must learn to get back on the right track as quickly as possible and continue to better yourself. Whatever you decide to do-whether it's raising a family, healing the sick, protecting the country, conserving natural resources, or any other available position-just remember that you'll be taking care of business everyday. .
