For Central's Annual G. Sayre, C. Leuterbach, M. Barlau, and J, Harvey are held captives ot Auction Pow Wow. The Needy Student Fund, which is in existence today was set up in l928. This was the beginning of a different outlook on the auction. It is more than a festivity, it is a regular program with a definite purpose. lt is more than a tradition at Central, more than iust a thing of laughter and fun. The auction is the spirit of Thanksgiving. Under the direction of Mr. Dale Baum, the solicitors in 1958 were kept very busy, going from store to store explaining this old tradition, and the good cause behind it. Co-chairmen Jeris Jerina and Dennis Peterson helped raise the competitive bidding in the student packed audi- torium. Heap Big Pow Wow was the theme carried out with colorful costumes, a gayly decorated auditorium, and painted faces. This year's attendance was by far greater than any of the previous years. This tradition was started in the 1800 s. Funds re- ceived at the auctions were put into Thanksgiving baskets for needy families. This was the beginning of many suc- cessful auctions at Central. The custom was to form pools of people who were the only ones admitted to the audi- torium. At this time candy was the only thing auctioned off but different items were added to the collection of articles until we come to the great variety that we find today. Now everyone is invited to attend the auction and you dont have to be in a pool. J. Nelson I. lewis D. Henrichs and J. Asbiornsen get ready to do their war dance.
