But to every Central graduate, the tower is the symbol, also, at that which has happened under its shadow . . . the past. With each turn of the page you will recall people, events, and places which remain in your memory as small zeniths in your lite at Central. From cover to cover you will relive the happy and the sad incidents, the exciting and the plain ordinary moments ot school life. The tense mo- ments at a basketball game when the s c a re is tied and there is a minute left to play, saluting our flag at the assem- blies, waiting tor report cards on Wednesdays and having a dreamy time at the Prom . . . these and many other events will be brought back as you turn the pages of the l956 ZENITH. idmdndahadaa Editor: Nancy Nichols Staff: More Putnins Mr. George A. Beck, Central's prin- cipal, has been the guiding hand in the affairs of this school for the past seven- teen years. This fall we were minus our principal for two months. Mr. Beck, because of his outstanding work in education, was chosen to tour Europe in the employ of the Armed Forces. He returned home iust in time to celebrate Christmas withlhis family and friends. The purpose of this tour was to see that the American high schools in Europe measure up to the quality of those here in the States, and to make suggestions for their improvement. Cs. he ,lf -v CJ' During Mr. Beck's absence, our assistant principal, Mr. Kenneth Talkovich, assumed a dual role of principal and assistant. Mr. Talkovich began teaching here in l94O and since 1944 he has been Cen- tral's assistant principal. To these two schoolmen go the thanks of those at Central. MR. JEROME BEN- At least one science course was taken by each member of the student body. Biology taught us to understand the functions of living organisms. ln physics we learned how to apply accepted facts and we explored the chemical world in the laboratory. The mysteries of x's, '!.'s, lines AB, and the functions of an angle were unfolded in the classes of algebra, business arithmetic, geometry, and trigonometry. Our A Cappella choir, orchestra, and band enchanted us with their outstanding performances. To offer more help to those planning to enter music as their vocation, special lessons and a course in music fundamentals were offered. A new ultra-modern art room helped us to express our- selves through painting, sculpture, and many other media. The artists helped many organizations by handling much of their publicity through designing posters and making decorations. Classes were held in auto mechanics, wood work- ing, and printing. These courses produced many well-qualified tradesmen. America's future homemakers had many opportunities to practice their arts in the home economics labs. This year some of the girls from the iunior high used our facilities also, because of the construction going on there. All of the departments at Central used the facilities for visual education. MR. Zvmfenz' Qrmcd Student Council is an all school organization. lt is the organization which gives the students everyday training in citizenship. lt is through the council that we have our student supervised cafeteria, halls, student supply store, lost and found committee, and also faculty-student committees. This organization gives the student an oppor- tunity to form policies having to do with their own conduct and activities. It is the organization which is working constantly to make Central a better school and the student body more conscious of all its faults and instill a desire to overcome its shortcomings as good citizens of Central. The all-school play, The Bat, revolved around Cornelia Van Gorder, a maiden lady of sixty, who rents the summer home of a banker reported killed in Colorado some months before. About this time it is discovered that a large sum is missing from his bank. Four people were after the money: the bank cashier, wrongfully accused of taking it, a detective engaged by Miss Van Gorder to clear up the mystery, the doctor's friend, a supposed confederate of the missing banker, and the Bat, a notorious thief who has long eluded the police. Schade I I I I BRAINERD The season's opener was a thriller. Even in losing 20-0, the Troians showed evidence of a championship year. DULUTH EAST Central's high-spirited gridders romped over East in a rain-soaked game by a creditable 28-0. The hard-charging Troian line collected eight fumbles during the night to set up touchdown after touchdown. Scoring for Central was Modeen who tallied around end, Levinson who plowed for two touchdowns, and Bloomberg who caught a pass for another. DU LUTH CATH EDRAL CentraI's second step toward the championship was the downing of Cathedral 26-O. Troy's driving backfield produced the scores with Hren on a three-yard plunge, Modeen with a drive from the two-yard line, a pass from Modeen to Rockstad in the end zone, and another sprint of fifteen yards by Hren. MORGAN PARK Determined Central fought its way to another victory, but it took a last minute touchdown by Modeen to do it. Although Troy dominated the entire game, the Wildcats gave them a scare by slipping away for two quick touchdowns in the first half. Central's first touchdown was a pass interception and eight-yard run by Hutchengs. Then came Hren's electrifing eighty-one yard kickoff return to score again. Successful conversions kept the score tied at 14-14 until Modeen plowed for his game-winning touchdown to beat Morgan Park 20-14. G. BOSiClCkl D. Modeen T. Brown al R. liukkonen H. Although it was a non-conference game, Central showed tremendous desire in holding them. Central's touchdown was scored by Modeen. SUPERIOR CENTRAL lniury-ridden Central went into this game without three of its starters. The Troians were determined as they sent Hren into the end zone for one touchdown, but Superior proved too much as they collected two touchdowns and a touchback to win 15-6. SUPERIOR EAST Central's gridders invaded Superior again with revenge in their minds. From the very beginning Central showed its power by pushing a total of seven touch- downs into the end zone. Tallying for Central were Levinson with two, Modeen with two, Hren with two, and Fedo with a four-yard bust for another. DENFELD A desire-filled Central squad met the Hunters with unequalled determination to secure both City and Twin Ports championships. Central, battling from the be- ginning, turned alertness into victory. At the start of the second quarter Brown busted through to block a Denteld quick kick which was recovered on the Hunter's sixteen yard line. Four plays later a pass from Levinson to Brown in the end zone gave game Central the winning touchdown. The conversion was by Modeen on a run off tackle. S. Bloomberg S. Shamblott R. Golberg B.
