I had been trained in this business of selling subscriptions to the newsg but instead of selling newspapers. I simply sold and installed wire recorders. Then all one had to do was push a but- ton. and from the machine would come stories and images in technicolor. At Central. I expected to use some of this publicized high-pressure salesmanship with a dash of psychol- ogy and oratory. I prepared some high-falutin' speeches on the excellence of the publications and the importance of keeping up with school news. I was disappointed to discover that salesmanship con- sisted of announcing that I would accept the money for subscriptions. Thatis all there was to it. I could readily see why everyone wanted these publications- the Zenith for an over-all picture of the schoolyear- the Spec to keep up with current school news. In spite of the enthusiasm of students about order- ing subscriptions to their school publications. there was a problem in getting everyone to remember to I f fm . bring his money. For the Spec this wasn't so bad. since subscriptions were taken only at the beginning of each semester. Zenith subscriptions. however. were divided into three payments. About two weeks after the first pay- ment was due. one boy came rushing to me tightly' clutching his money and shouting I gotta haye a Zenithlq I managed to order one for him. Later. when time came for the second payment. my custom- er forgot his money with regularity eyery day for a week. But I had a cure for himl The next week. l kept sending thought messages to him. and he soon brought the cash. For the last payment. I flew to his home in my space ship and collected. Besides selling subscriptions, I took charge of sell- ing junior and sophomore pictures. This involved more money collecting from forgetters. If it's true that a fool and his money are soon parted . some of these Trojans must be very wise. All in all. this soliciting was a great experience in learning human nature: and I'm sure all my cus- tomers were satisfied. 25

The staff this year en- deavored to hold to that standard of ext-ellenrfe. In January. the paper was awarded an honorable men- tion for its service in promoting the sale of Christ- mas seals for the St. Louis County Tuherr-ulosis As- sor-iation. The staff introduced some innoxations this year. 'lihey' sent reporters to other lor-al and area sehools for interxiews with students and teachers. Getting: the latest new s. sports rundow ns and features and financ-ing the paper were part of the vomplex jolt. Meeting deadlines seemed lo lie a major prohlem to many a budding reporter. The Spec' eould not lie vompared to the New Xork 'limes or the Nlars Xlonarvh only lievause it rlirl not haye foreign or interplanetary r-orrespondents. 27
