edt: ZQZ7 Central high school, when first occupied in 1892, was the only one in the city. It has existed for over half a century and through three major wars. ln 1892, there were 400 students enrolled in Central and 15 teachers made up the faculty. Since the pur- pose of the school was to prepare pupils for college, the courses offered were classical, scientific, general, and English. School hours were from 9 a. m. to 1:30 p. m. In 1910, the enrollment passed the 1000 mark, and in 1940 it reached a peak of 2769. The 1949-50 enrollment is 1223, and the faculty is composed of 58 teachers. The aim of the school has changed from college preparation to training for citizenship. The school has been noted for athletics. In 1896, Superior Central refused to play off a tie in football because '4Central boys are too roughf, In 1901, We set three new track records. ln 1904, we won one foot. ball game with 130 points, and in 1906 we became state football champions. ln 1930, Central Won the district track meet, football conference, regional bas- ketball tournament and city hockey title, and the golf team won all its matches. No other school in the state approaches our skiing record, 15 out of 19 state championships. Central is a school steeped in traditions. The auc- tion was first held in 1896, when Mr. Custance auc- tioned off articles that had been left around the build- ing. The following year, two boys appeared draped in shoe strings and tin cans the first Dress Up Day. The tradition of electing a Queen of Athletics was begun in 1935. The oldest school publication is the yearbook, first published in 1894 as the Tiger. The following year, it was given its present name, the Zenith. ln 1946 and 1948 the Zenith won an all-American rating in the National Scholastic Press Association. The first Spectator was published in 19165 in 1923 it took its present day form. Other publications which were discontinued, were the Junior Record of 1894 and the DCHS Chimes of 1919. Central is an old school with a modern program of education. lts ideals are a challenge to all its students. This is our school. 'div' 1-:Wi flea?
