As seniors we have already crossed many of these such as selecting our course of study, choosing our friends, and deciding upon our life's work. Many times we have had to choose between right and wrong, duty and pleasure, study and play. How correctly these decis- ions have been made determines the character and stature of the individual. Our teachers and parents have served as the handrails of our bridges guiding and directing us as we have cautiously ventured from one to the other. Graduation does not mean we will have no more bridges to cross. Actually they will be more numerous and even more difficult since we will be without the aid and guidance of our teachers. The knowledge and understanding we have acquired during our school years will now have to guide us. Some of us will be leaving home to attend college, living a new and different lifeg others will be entering immediately upon their lifels work. But whatever road we choose, we must remem- ber our greatest bridges are yet to be crossed and over these we must journey alone. The bridges pictured throughout this book represent those which we, along with students everywhere, have crossed and will cross in the days to come. FOREWORD Board of Directors. . . . But during their sophomore year they got off to a very good start by holding one of the most successful dances ever to be held at Central. They also chose their class colors, red and white, and purchased their jackets and sweaters. In 11th grade the class presented their first play and also held a Sweetheart Dance which proved to be another successful dance. The Senior play, Sister of the Bride, was presented by the Senior class during their last year at Central High School. In the year of 1956-57 the students and faculty of Central High School decided to organize a Student Council in order to relieve some of the many chores of the main office such as deter- mining the amount of dances, parties, and the like each class should hold. The council has formed a lost and found clepartrnentf' and is working with many other of the school's problems along with Mr. Brothers. Thespian Society Central High School installed its first National Thespian Society-May 16, 1956. This organi- zation is a branch of the Dramatic Club under the direction of Mrs. Lehr, Mrs. Wallick and Mr. Warfield. The purpose of the organization is to instruct young people in stage work, acting, make-up work and other small details connected with stage work. A permanent usher group is formed from this organization. In order to remain active eight new members must join each year. Those pictured on the opposite page are the first members of Troop 1648. As the 1957 Panther comes from the press the Editorial staff looks at it with a deep sense of pride but yet with a sigh of relief. We spent many endless hours of labor and made many mistakes as We prepared our book for the press. We shall never regret our experiences both good and bad for we feel we have accomplished a great undertaking. We could never have published this book without the help of Mr. Fauth. Senior Chorus During this year, the Senior Chorus, which is composed of Juniors and Seniors, has made three important appearances. The first appearance, which was the highlight of the entire year, was the fine Christmas program presented to the joint assembly the day before Christmas vacation. The Chorus made another fine showing in the Operetta, which was held the first Week in May, during National Music Week. The last of these important appearances Was made at Commencement. These appearances were made possible only under the line direction of Arthur E. Warfield. Intermediate Choir The intermediate choir is a preparatory training period for the senior chorus. During the time the group learns the reading of parts and blending of voices. This is a new situation for some, especially the boys, who are having their first experience in reading in the bass clef. During the year, individuals from this group participated in school functions and the annual music festival. The advisors of the group are Mrs. Samchok and Mr. Warfield. -Q -f----WM f..-e..M.w Eighth Grade Chorus The seventh and eighth grade choruses, under the direc- tion of Mrs. Sarnchock, recorded their voices at Christmas. These recordings were played over the speaking system. At the present, Mrs. Samchock is training their voices for future chorus work. Seventh Grade Chorus Q...--4 l Senior Members of the Senior Band include students from grades seven to twelve inclusive. Their activities included: Two Halloween Parades, which were held in York and Hanover, assembly programs, a concert featuring the trumpet ,virtuoso, Rafael Mendez, and four basketball games. V Mr. Earl Manseau, the director, made all these fine appearances possible. The Junior Band is composed of students in the fifth and sixth grades of the Central Elementary Schools, and a number from the seventh and eighth grades of the high school. Throughout the school year, they participated in assem- bly programs, and P. T. A. meetings. Mr. Ferris is a successful small town businessman, his wife a charming housewife. Their oldest daughter, Gloria is away at college. Their younger daughter, Penny, is a typical, active teenager. Early in March the Ferris family receives a telegram from Gloria saying that she is on her way home. Wild guesses fly through the Ferris household as to why Gloria would be coming home in the middle of the last semester. When Gloria arrives, she calmly tells them that she is going to quit college and marry Martin Thatcher, a big, handsome, athletics teacher. After the initial shock the Ferrises accept the fact, and Gloria and Mrs. Ferris begin to make plans for a big wed- ding, only to the dismay of Mr. Ferris, who doesn't see how he can afford it. All this sudden attention on Gloria gives younger sister Penny an inferiority complex. She considers herself com- pletely unwanted. The feeling is heightened when part of her college fund is borrowed to Finance Gloria's wedding. As the wedding approaches everyone becomes frantic, but in the end everything turns out well. The wedding goes smoothly and Penny finds herself a man. - Junior Play JUNIOR PLAY CAST Elinor Prescott. , . Leaper Prescott. . Cheryl Prescott. . Petey Prescott. . . Mary Jo Jennings .... E. Warfield In the early nineties, Jim Redding lived on a farm near the little village of Willow Point on the Ohio River. He longed to be a river pilot on one of the large steamboats that passed up and down the river in glamorous procession. This operetta is the story of how he set about to realize his ambition. The by-plot of the white aggie, of how it changed hands and eventually came back to its owner, furnishes interest and suspense throughout. The personalities of the river town-Jim's young friends, Pappy the grocer, Steve the farmer, and Sally the village girl who had faith in Jim-all add variety and color to this story of river folk. Magazine Campaign On September 10, 1956, our school launched its annual magazine campaign. For two weeks theistudents worked and sold magazines to meet their goal of S7,000, which will be used for movies and athletic equipment. Although the students did not reach their goal, they did do a fine job in selling a total of S6,419.79. The campaign was managed by Joyce Russell with Brenda Croumer as her assistant. The manager for the Crowell-Collier campaign was Mary Jane Snyder, assisted by Patricia Frey. Connie Witmer was manager for the Curtis Company, and her assistant was Gail Venable. The managers, assistants, and home room secretaries did a fine job and deserve much credit. In addition to receiving our regular prizes this year, Robert Wolfgang received a S50 bill from the Crowell-Collier Company for being the mystery student. This year Mr. Fauth had the highest home room with S378.19. The highest salesman for the entire campaign was Ronald White with a total of S250.69. . J . Although they got a slow start they finished with quite a flurry, winning their last four games and finishing in a tie for second place in the second half. Charles Frey paced the Panthers with a fine 15.1 point per game average. As there were many juniors on the team this year Central can expect as even better basketball team next season. Senior High Cheerleaders This outstanding group received many compliments during the year for their terrific job in cheerleading. With their new outfits and peppy cheers they made a big hit with everyone. This group representing Central, contributed great competition in the Cheerleading Con- test. Three of these girls will be leaving this group through graduationg they are Elaine Attig, Sue Griffin and Judy Snyder. These girls along with the rest of the senior class give their best wishes to our future cheerleaders. Jack Lehr was absent when the picture was taken. A new coach, Mr. Donald Poet, piloted the Junior Varsity Team this year with a very suc- cessful season. Many of their prospective players, however, took a step up to the Varsity Team. They had a very impressive record with 15 wins and only 3 losses, sharing top honors in the League with the West York Junior Varsity. A football team consisting of students from the eighth, ninth, and tenth grades, is a new sport, addition at Central High. Seventy two students appeared at the first practice, which was on September 5, 1956, and fifty remained after contact work. The coaches are Mr. Robert S. Bowers and Mr. Herbert Hollowell, who was a student teacher at Central. This football program resulted from the donation of a substantial fund from the North York Playground Association of which Mr. Lloyd Kauffman is president. The funds were used to buy uniforms, blocking sleds and tackling dummies for the team. . .lunlor Hugh Basketball Bottom left to right James Bryan manager Gary Miller, Larry Tremitiere, Jeff Sleeger Eugene Strme Charles Brant Lourie Wilborne, Clinton Roderick, managerg Lewis Buckingham Gordon Rudacille Jeff Jordon, Lester Loucks, Bryon Young, Jay Cannon Barry Thompson Robert Kessler Charles Johnson, coach. This year's Rifle Team, under the coaching of Mr. Dififenbaugh, has been a great improvement over last year's initial start. They have participated in three P.I.A.A. At the York County Scholastic Track Meet held at Small's Athletic Field our team placed second in the entire county . The boys' Junior High Track Team also had a very good season. They competed in six meets. They won 3 of these meets against opposition like Mt. Rose, Susquehannock, and Dallastown. They placed fourth in the Sonny Shepard meet, third in the districts, and first in the county track meet. The girls' Senior High team proved to be quite successful under the leadership of Mrs. Poet, by capturing first place at the Annual York County Track Meet. Dorcas Hollinger, the Central speed demon, again tied the record for the 50 yard dash, running it in 6 seconds. We are sorry to lose Mary Jane Snyder this year, for she brought us two outstanding victories. She broke her old record in the baseball throw, winning toss 247 feet. She set a new record in the basketball throw, winning toss 101 feet 9 in. The girl's 220 yd. relay team composed of Connie Witmer, Sue Ann Ruby, Mary Jane Snyder, and Dorcas Hollinger won first place. The girl's Junior High Track Team did not place first in the York County Track Meet but we wish them more success in the future. This year coach Herbert Schmidt's team had quite a job cut out for them. The loss of many of the varsity men via graduation caused many changes in the line-up. Coach Schmidt did a- very fine job on the team despite the fact that league competition was stronger than usual and that there were not many candidates for the team. The spirit and morale of the team were excellent and were factors in their outstanding per- formance, as they finished a fine season, taking second place. We look back over this year and remember the pains and pleasures with which we published the 1957 Panther. We'1l never forget the piles of composition we wrote or the many photographs we took. Also we'l1 never forget the expert help and . . k 3 never have gone to press. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of the class of ' cl 1957, the editorial staff and the business staff, Mr. Fauth, Mr. Craley, the printer an the binder and everyone else who helped to make this book a success. I know in the years to come this book which represents some of the best years of our lives will bring back memories both sad and happy.
