In EasT and WesT alike There is a common dread of a Third World War, and The caTasTrophic desTrucTion iT would bring. Some Time ago PresidenT Eisenhower said, WhaT The world needs Today even more Than a gianT leap inTo space is a gianT sTep Toward peace. This is a senTimenT applauded by The common folk of boTh hemispheres. Peace has been The dream of Thinking men down Through The years, buT iT has been elusive and has slipped away many Times iusT when men ThoughT ThaT They had developed a Tormula To secure iT. The problem oT how To bring abouT a lasTing peace is sTill awaiTing a soluTion. Possibly your generaTion will Take ThaT greaT sTep Toward peace of which PresidenT Eisenhower spoke. wr - i My Good Friends: Al lhis lime. we begin lo lhink in a malure and senlimenlal manner aboul lhe value of our educa- lion and ils meaning lo our lulure work. This es- leemed inslilulion. which we now musl lhinlc ol as our Alma Maler, has given lo us a sounder basis for all ol our lulure elforls lhan any olher high school is capable ol giving. We should all be exceedingly gralelul lor lhe opporlunilies which Cenlral has made available, and also lor lhe line 'friendships which we have made. - The developmenl ol lhe 2I4 as a class was mosl unusual. Despile lhe comparalivel large number ol boys who comprise lhe class, we became a smoolh working, ligihlly knil organizalion which accom- plished whal was necessary. More signilicanl. how- ever. we developed associalions and friendships which will be invaluable lo us in lhe wide, wide world. These comradeships indeed show lhal lhe only way lo achieve a peaceful exislence is lo know and undersland our fellow man. The develop- menl ol characler is one ol lhe grealesl and mosl obvious resulls ol a Cenlral educalion. Bul char- acler is b no means a gill: il is somelhing which lhe individual musl build himself. I am lruly gralelul, and exlremely proud, lo have been able lo serve you. Il is nol ollen lhal one is lorlunale enough lo be in a posilion lo render service lo such an exlraordinary group ol young men. I sincerely lhanlc you for your lo al supporl, lor your line achievemenl. and lor lhe chance which you have given me lo play a parl in lhe adminislra- lion ol our class. Especial lhanlcs are in order, also, for lhose ollicers. commillee chairmen. Record Boolc slall members, and all olhers who helped beller lhe class welfare. Il was lhese people who helped mold a screaming mob inlo a well-lcnil organizalion which showed greal accomplishmenls. The following quolalion is lalcen from lhe words of Ralph Waldo Emerson. noled I9lh Cenlury American poel and essayisl. ll seems quile lilling bolh for lhe lheme ol lhis line Record Boolc and for lhe occasion ol our commencemenl, and il epil- omizes all lhal has preceded. Nolhing can bring you peace bul yourself: nolhing can bring you peace bul lhe lriumph of principles. STEPHEN H. GREEN Presidenl. 2 l4lh Gradualing Class
