Here are the President, Joe Diaz, the Vice President, Grace Barter, the Secretary, Frances Johnson, and the Treasurer, 11Ford Young representing our town's first families. The people on Senior Blvd. are the oldest residents of Central, U. S. A. These citizens have, for four long, full years, lived in our town, studying, working, supporting all the functions, attending all the games, and holding up that high standard which has existed as long as our town has. All that time they both inhaled and exhaled that wonderful something in our town's atmosphere called Central Spirit. Early in June, l954, our oldest residents will resign from their positions, in an impressive ceremony, wearing blue and white caps and gowns, leaving their coveted places open to those people in Junior Square who are experienced and worthy enough to fill their own shoes. During these last four years, many have lived and died in the world around us, but here in Central, U. S. A., on Senior Blvd., WE LIVE. 24 mi N IORBW dw' --'vnu---U ACOSTA, CARMEN Acosm, SAM X s -,.q , ...,,, jf: f . ' .W 'gif 5 ,, . R.o.T.c. Rifle Club, 3, R.o.T.c., 3, 4, Fai., 2, 3. , . To live on Junior Square is the ambition of every stu- dent from the time he enters school, for it is here that a true upper-class standing is first attained, the work is half over, and the fun is beginning in earnest. As you walk under the swaying sign that proclaims the entrance to Our Town's Fine Art Center, you probably wonder what you will find inside its walls. We think this center is unique among museums and centers of learn- ing in America. We are proud of its contribution to culture. What you find here, you will see, you will hear, and you will feel. W The center was built through years of hard work, careful planning, and a lot of practical dreaming. lt is the home of three major groups, art, music, and drama. The Art Department combines ceramics, painting, and plastic work. On the stage of the center, you may see, almost every day, rehearsals of coming productions. Throughout your tour, you will hear music pouring forth from the near-by music studios where the civic symphony and community bands practice. You will see the studios and stages, the excellent equipment, the directors, and the artists at work. You will see the end results of this combined effort, but you will not see the spirit of co-operation that penetrates every barrier to the accomplishment of a hard job. We, here in Our Town, like to call it artistic harmony . We feel that just looking at the achievements of others is not enough. You have to be a part of something to understand it fully. That is why the Art Department paints posters advertising the plays and musicals here at the center, and that is why the music directors work out accompaniments and special effects for operettas and pageants in Our Town. But, as we said, You have to be a part of something to really enjoy it. We want you to enjoy the center, so won't you come along now and for a while, at least, become a part of the artistic harmony that lives and works in Our Town's best loved landmark, the Fine Arts Center. To your right and down the incline is the Art Department. Of course, you will see a lot of art before you actually reach the studio, for we have found that you cannot keep art locked in a room-no matter how large it may be. We find art all through the streets and boulevards of Our Town. We see these students learning, creating, building-toward practical uses. They are painting murals for our cafeteria, advertising for our dramatic productions, and even invading the newspaper world with their original ideas. In whatever direction their talent leads them tomorrow-they are gain- ing in experience today, and we are growing with them, for as we watch their conceptions of the beauties and wonders of everyday activities, we, too, begin to watch for-and to see-the beauty, the wonder, in the commonplace Whether we admit it-whether we even know it-we are artists too. Art is not limited to one room. The picture at the top shows the woodworking class where art is a vital factor. Working with plastics are: from left to right, Franklin Sevax, Wallace Williamson, and Bill Greenwood. Below are left to right, Danny Rosales and Leroy Basquez working on soap carving. Below is David Prior working on the mural which was hung in the faculty lunchroom. This is one of the many being macle to be hung throughout the building. This project ofthe Art Department is known as Operation Mural. Many hours each week are spent in practice for the four separate concerts, the combined mid-winter concert, and for programs in other towns. We feel that each member of these groups is an artist in himself, and we are proud of his efforts. To those of us who listen, comes a better understanding of all music-from Beethoven to Romberg-and with this understanding comes the feeling of participation. The ar- tistic harmony of these groups is felt by every citizen of Our Town. Since the beginning of time, man has sung. Because tradition is a well established factor in Our Town, we, too, have many choral groups. This year our musical extravaganza, Briga- doon combined the talents of many exciting new Starlets and the future virtuosos of the show time band . 5 4 E 5 ,Y A A1 I 9 i X., I, pl . Meet The Press The Journalism Department exists in a large, sunlit space filled with the air of friendly co-operation. As you enter it, to visit or work, you are greeted by a busy noise , mixed with laughter and the snaps of bouncing typewriter keys. The Central High Times is lovingly put together piece by piece on the lower floor of this amazing place, and upstairs, on the balcony, slowly and mysteriously, the yearbook takes shape. Noted for its progressiveness and business-like atmosphere, The Journal- ism Department carries out Central's public relations program much as a chamber of commerce. Our town is more than proud of its press, just as the press is more than proud of our town, and shows it at every opportunity. Who is the Press? You've met them, every one, while traveling through our town, seen their work in this book, and read their editorials, features, and articles in the Times. Now here's your chance to get to know them as a group, in their natural habitat. A., it is possible that there are some of you whose interests are still elsewhere. lf you are one who has yet to be satisfied, stop at Camp Central on your way out. Here you will find a great number of boys. This fact in itself may arouse interest, but the important thing about it is what the boys are doing. Since they are members of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps of the U. S. Army, their main purpose at Camp Central is to study military tactics. Not only do they learn to dress, march, and perform military maneuvers, but they learn an important lesson in sportsmanship and good grooming. Also there is a group of girls at Camp Central. They are the R.O.T.C. Sponsors, a team organized to per- form intricate drills for the pleasure of the onlooking community. This well matched group of girls is chosen from many for their posture, appearance, carriage, and rhythm. The R.O.T.C. Sponsors do not march every sixth hour just for the exercise. They too are learning a lesson in good citizenship, grooming, and the art of taking orders gracefully. R.O.T.C. is noted for its early morning reviews in sub-zero weather and its annual formal balls.
