University of New Mexico Central's evolution has not by any means by-passed her faculty. Through new concepts and new methods has come a better educational program. Teachers do not now teach classes according to the theory that students must be forced to learn by fear of punishment, they have come to believe that students will learn and will enjoy doing it, if the sub- ject matter is presented in an interesting way and applied to the problems of everyday life. They can better under- stand the students because, on the average, they are younger themselves and all have been trained to cope with student problems. Through the combined efforts of the faculty and the administration, courses which have decreased in value dur- ing the years have been abolished and more useful subjects added to the curriculum. Today's world demands character and personality as well as knowledge and skillg Central has satisfied this need by offering courses such as social living, psychology, and sociology. Specialized courses are also offered by the stu- dent wishing to branch out. Central is well aware that today's graduate is tomorrow's leader. ,941 RT Mr. Hartley g m1mmsw as I sfffly W' .' Students have excellent facilities available to them and have learned to enjoy music not only for the pleasure it gives them, but also the pleasure it gives others. Those participating in Central's musical activities are also encouraged to enter such groups as the Pueblo Civic Symphonyg thus, they become valuable members of their com- munity. The trend in Central's growing art department during the past years has been toward variety and specialization. Because of the rapid increase in the number of students attending our school, the department has had more funds available with which to purchase a greater variety of materials to work with. This has made the course more interestingg as a result, more students have taken it and discovered new avenues to pleasure and profit. Although students taking drama derive a great deal of personal enjoyment from it, they also give an immeasura- ble amount of pleasure to their fellow students and teachers. The drama department has enlarged its old activities and created new ones throughout the past half centuryg this has been possible because of the co-operation of the students, the board, and the citizens of this community. Drama students are also encouraged to benefit their community by joining the Pueblo Civic Players. QQTRT Art In Action Studio at Central High The best way to take on a problem is by attacking the basic structure. In this case the problem is the contours of the human body. Shown below are: Don Smith, Mauriene Mattocks, Gail Barnes, and Sally, an old favorite Central model. Straight lines, curves, and planes put to- gether in the right proportions yield some of man's mechnical genius. Struggling with the right proportions are: Don Smith, Chuck Lu- cero, and Bob Ewing. Before the discovery of fire, the invention of the wheel or the knowledge of agriculture. men were decorating the walls of caves with ground rock colors because it was important to them. A survey of a recent issue of Collier's maga- zine showed that 97 of the 120 pages in one issue had art work on them. So, it must still be im- portant. It is a long way from prehistoric caves to Colliers, but the motive is the same. The purpose of our art department is to help these students take art. Whether they want to become illustrators or just draw, the art depart- ment tries to help them. Some students have tal- entg some don't. All are interested in art. llow- ever good or bad they may be, they are probably happier people for being able to do something creative. If they can do it better for having had an art course, then our aim has been realized. The C.H.S. Orchestra was the first to appear. It made its debut in 1916 with 17 members. Its progress was of little notice and for several years there was no orchestra. One of its early directors was Miss Lois Hull, well known to many later Centralites as the Latin teacher. . The Glee Clubs came into existence in 1917. The groups varied from class groups to mixed groups with the present organizations coming into the spotlight much later. Central's first operetta was in 1920 under Miss Hull. In 1923 under W. H. Samuels the Band made its first public appearance at the Canon-Central game. Mr. Stillman became director of the band in 1925 and formulated it into a successful band. The final definite time set aside for a musical or- ganization was in 1925 when the orchestra was given time in the curriculum. 7 MissNHardin came to Central the same year and directed the Glee Clubs to many successes. During the next decade, the music departments achieved many successes. In 1937 Mr. Keltner became band and orchestra director. Mr. Miller came to Central in 1945 and Mr. Rosen in 1951. Miss Thompson started her music career at Central in 1948. Today the orchestra has 85 members, the band 105, and the Glee Clubs 250 members. Of course, advances have been made along many lines. Student stage hands, stage managers, and publicity agents have become the standard of Central productions. The better quality of acting, the increased amount of student participation, the professional tone of the performances, and the improved stage settings have been the result of fifty years of progress. During the past fifty years progress has been made not only in Centra1's curriculum, but also in the quantity and quality of activities offered to her student body. Just as buggy rides have been abolished in favor of dragging Main in a hot rod, so organizations have changed their character in order to meet the new and different requirements of their members. Central has discovered that debating and creative Writing, once considered extra- curricular activities, are important enough to be incorporated into the curriculum. The societies once devoted to these activities, therefore, now devote their time to rounding out the personalities of their members and helping others. Each of the activities that existed in 1903 has evolutionized and become finer and more useful by adjusting itself to present-day problems and needs, or it has fallen by the Way and a new, more adaptable activity has arisen in its place. Thus, with an open mind and flexible opinions, Central has met the challenge of the ever changing world and emerged victorious. M, g'f?25mM LMP' lgmvggxw Student Council In the field of student government, Central was one of the first pioneers. Since 1923, Central has had a government ofthe students, by the students, and for the students. Political leadership and training are one of the results yielded the participants in our student council, a training which is of much value in later years. It is a time when the alumni think back on some of the happiest, most carefree days of their life, and a time when students perhaps realize that life will not always be free of care. Each year as the sun rises on Homecoming Day, surrounded by crepe paper, napkins, boards, and chicken wire, tired but happy Centralites ad- mire their float, a masterpiece of the night. AS the morning moves on, traditional, weird, beautiful, comical, and ingenious structures par- ade through the streets of the city. Scientifically, sports are ultra-modern with the placement of safety devices in old games and the addition of new games. Although these progressive advances have been made, and a player of a game of 1903, if brought to today, probably would not even approve the streamlined game that had evolved, the same determined, fighting spirit could be found in every Central football or basketball player in 1903 as Well as 1953. The concept of a game may change, but the thought behind it, the will to win, and the acceptance of defeat will never change. In the years that have passed since 1903, much progress has been made in the methods of education at Central, but we also find that sports have progressed. The sports have become more scientific. For example, we find that in the first part of the century the boys on the football field had less body protection than the boys on the field now. We now have helmets, hip pads, shoulder pads, and so on. The idea now is to protect the player but still allow him to be bodily free. Although years have passed since the 1903 football team took to the field, since the basketball team took to the court, and the baseball team took to the diamond, fundamentally we still find the same feeling in each p ayer. The feeling or drive, within the players, to win, but to win fairly, and the policy to lose graciously to an opponent who has beaten them, remain in the hearts of every player. That is the part of sports which will live forever in the minds and hearts of Central's athletes.
