Looking back, all through our lives we have learned by experience, and the benefits derived from this learning are greatly evi- dent in our advancements in the fields of cul- tural education and science. These accom- plishments appear as shining rays on our horizon. Yet, We have only set ajar the door to understanding and love. With our knowledge and faith, may we open wide this door and let our light emerge. Here we see unknown horizons brought t the scientific world of communications. I . ci' y, i 1 ' l 'IA I ff. Resulting from last year's bond issue pertaining to school funds, a large building program has been underway. Included in this program is the construction of two junior high school buildings which will in the future help to control the crowded conditions at Central and Centennial. Three grade schools and the new Centennial cafeteria are also a part of this building project. The newest methods and techniques of education are studied and introduced to the .students by the faculty, who are under the supervision of the superintendents and who are directed by the school board. Foremost in the minds of the administration is the moulding of the citizens of tomorrow. It is by proper provision of essential courses and pleasant conditions under which students can learn that they may be trained to adjust possible future situations. Activitie Activities are offered to almost every type of individual at Central. Everything from sports to fine arts are avail- able. There are organizations which offer social and civic service, others work on national and international projects. Military training is provided for those interested. Sports of all types can be found at Central. Varsity teams, intra- murals, and girls sports constitute a large portion of the athletic program. Contests in many varied fields are wait- ing for students to participate. Organizations and clubs, each offering programs, are here for those who are inter- ested. There are honorary groups, both national and civic, offered for the more ambitious students. Some organiza- tions, who by the time and effort of their members, bring honor and glory to the school. A few groups plan activities, assemblies, and dances. Others pass laws that regulate school life. The better maintenance of the school is one of the projects of one of these clubs. One international organization has as its goal, aid for people both nationally and internationally. Activities in the field of drama, arts, and music are yours for the asking. Music students participate in many civic and school programs. Art classes train students for a better understanding of arts. Drama classes plan enter- tainment for the student body. If none of these various groups seem to suit you, you may form one of your own, by organizing twenty members and a sponsor and present same to student council. It is monu- mental to sports at Central. It is the center of our greatest sport-football. Our theme for this story is sports provided for all. Everyone may participate. We witness a football, basketball, or baseball game and to our knowledge the players on the field are the only ones that make a ball-game good. But behind the scenes we see the band, majorettes, Catsclan, R.O.T.C., and the little man in the cheering section all working in co-ordination to better the game. In addition to the major sports, Central offers track, wrestling, golf, and tennis to satisfy the physical wants of its students. Intramurals are offered students who fail to make the other teams. Competitive organization of intramural sports make it in- teresting for all those involved. G.A.A. is available for the feminine athletes. Girls' intramurals are also offered. In these sports the girls are given a chance to earn let- ters and excel in different fields. Central has one of the best developed girls, sports pro- grams in the state. In the future we all sincerely hope that Central students will be provided with a new gymnasium. This will be possible if our building program is expanded. With this new addition to the school, more students will have unlimited opportunity to compete in competitive sports. Sports as a whole reach all 1600 Central students-no one is excluded. If you do not make the varsity teams you may want to participate in the other sports offered. If you do not wish to play on any of the teams with the majority you can practice to be a pro spectator. In any way it is viewed we have all enjoyed the major and minor sports. We all like to be on the victorious side and our outstanding teams in the past years, have granted us winning honors. In publishing the Times, we the students in journalism, have learned the principles of newspaper work, layout, and of the printing of newspapers. Central exchanges its newspaper with nearly two hundred other schools in this country, in Germany, Japan, Mexico, and other countries. By doing this, we learn the style, ideas, activities and news of the other schools. The greatest undertaking of the staff is to produce Central's annual, the Wildcat. All copy, layout, and part of the photography is done by them, in co-operation with the Art department, professional photographers, the en- gravers, and the printing company. Top right is Allan Lewis, photographer, trying to improve your picture. Above: Bula Leddy, faculty adviser. At lower right, Bob Diaz, working on design. The 1952 Yearbook was financed and published entirely by the the students with advice from the faculty. In making this book only the finest materials and engravings were used. The budgeting was done by the student financial managers with the aid of our faculty business adviser, Mr. Geisert. In the production of this book the stu- dents gained practical experience in the handling of money. The secretarial staff tries not to make too many errors. Norma Kochevar, Angie Flores Plrt Moves Into The Newpa per Realm Hundreds of thousands of people all over the country are making their living as artists . . . illustrating stories for magazines, making illustrations for newspapers and books, designing automobiles and clothing, decorating de- partment store windows, painting portraits and landscapes and painting pictures for greeting cards. The fields open to well-trained artists are tremendous. Central is trying to give students who are interested in the vocational pos- sibilities of art a good start on the road to success in that profession. RT The purpose of the art department is to try to give all students a sound, basic understanding of the principles of art . . . color, design, composi- tion, drawing and painting. The first year is a series of studies. The second, third, and fourth years put these principles into use. The student learns to master the basic media of illustration: pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, watercolor, and pas- tel. He is instructed in lettering and in the tech- niques of poster construction and in advertising art. The latter includes illustrations of the type used in magazines and newspapers. A student does not have to have great talent to do good work . . . or to learn . . . in the art cour- ses at Central. The main necessities are the will- ingness to work and a genuine desire to learn. At one time, the art class was looked upon as a sort of academic waste-basket where the mis-fits were sent. We don't subscribe to that at Central. We have students who come in for the four-year course and we have some who come in as juniors and seniors who want to round out their high school education by learning how to put an idea across pictorially. More and more students are beginning to realize that a good picture is worth ten thousand words and that the fellow who can draw has the advantage over the one who can't. Pictured above is Mr. William Hartley, Central's art director, and three of the exhibits from his one man show in the galleries at P. J. C. Music Those who participate and those who appreciate Five hundred of us participate in the musical activities and programs presented by our vocal and instrumental departments. The vocal groups are under direction of Dorothy Thompson, the band under direction of Mr, Sidney Rosen, and orchestra under direction of Mr. Malloy Miller. Various functions of these groups are: The Christmas Pageant, Vode- vil, Music Festival, Operetta, and entertaining at grade schools, Keating, Camp Carson, Teachers' Convention, Baccalaureate and Commencement, banquets and meetings, on the air, out-of-town trips such as Band Day at Boulder, and at the football and basketball games. The rest of us, about eleven hundred, are the ones who appreciate the talents of others. We attend the assemblies, Symphony, Artist Series, listen to the radio, and spend leisure time in the rec- ord shops. We started the year with getting acquaint- ed with the school and with those upper classmen. After the first semester we were accepted, we were one of the crowd, it was good to be here at last and we felt great. We now look forward to the next three years which we hope will bring new horizons, new adven- tures, and most of all, new successes. We have turned the iirst leaf of our high school book and we have but three more to turn. FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS Dick LEp6lLSOS .............,,,....,... Barbara Williams, senior class secretary Ed Diaz senior class treasurer Seniors After twelve years of climbing and striving for a set goal, the seniors have now reached the highest step before going forward into a world of new experiences. During the past four years we have gained knowledge and background. Special memories remind us of our graduation, Kid Day, the best seats in the assemblies, and all the other privileges of upperclassmen. Our thoughts changed to what college to attend, what career to choose, and how to prepare for it. We began to take our place in the community by accepting responsibility in industry and work. Behind us now, we leave our cherished positions for those who will take our place in the halls of Central. New horizons are stretching before us with the oppor- tunity for further accomplishment.
