As in any community of this size a complex form of govern- ment is needed. And as in any government, our govern- ment must reach the needs of every individual. To handle both the needs of the students and the needs of the school we have the Student Council, presided over by the president elected by the students. To handle the curriculum, courses of study, methods of teaching, and all of the other educational needs of the students, we have the faculty, headed G jf, b th rincipal and assistant principal. , ' 0 I if I, N KP, L orkifglg wit the chool board, which handles the f My Ig! ffl fbi iongl neexcjy of theNE?':hotcZ, such Qsfthe hiring of the ' U X If N I ac e , fiivtnce, e cl, ism e s pei tendent and his lil l tif -'KF f it I Y, Ip, LJ assist nt. , . S ,g,,,,,..-3 The Curricular Advisers Plan F or E TRAL Functioning for the past twenty years, the Central High School Guidance Department has moved forward under the direction of Miss Mary McNally. The chief aim of the department is to help students adjust to their enviroment, and to aid the school in the whole development of each boy and girl. This department recognizes that in the ever-changing world of today the greatest need is individual adjustment. To aid Central's 1600 students in educational and vocational planning, and to help them solve their personal prob- lems is the service given by this counseling staff which now includes seven people who give part of their teaching day to this personnel work. Planning for colleges, vocational clinics, and employment placement are also important phases of this department. Freshman guidance and orientation is handled by the sixteen social living teachers, who work in con- nection with the guidance department pictured on the opposite page. ws-w-1 WW, ... ww-vwq-an-m,,h Aw-vw-mmvu.-X ' fqwwmfywm ' - A mf, mf-QW..-W.,.W ,.. Engle- wood was defeated easily by the hard charging Central team to a score of 33-0. The fighting Central line scored two of five touchdowns in bringing home the initial victory for Coach Raso. A week later Lakewood went down to defeat on the short end of a 22-12 score. The victory open- ed the home season and inaugurated the beautiful new football stadium on a victory note. WEST DENVER We battled evenly with the West Denver Cowboys for more than three quarters before finally going ahead and winning by a 12 to 6 margin. With Hve minutes left to play and being behind 6 to 0, the Wildcats climaxed a 53 yard drive by scoring the tying touchdown. Finally with two minutes left to play the break that Cen- tral needed to win occurred. Mike Regan, the hard charging Central half back, picked up a fumble in the West Denver backfield and raced 44 yards for the winning score. NORTH DENVER The Wildcats boosted thir win column to six straight when they overcame the staunch North Denver Vikings, 32 to 26. Although behind at one time 7 to 6, Central always appeared to havm mastery over the Denver team. The Wildcats built up a 19 to 7 advantage in the first half, and in the Hrst three minutes of the third quarter, increased this lead to 26 to 7. At game's end, with Central scoring their fifth and final time with but two minutes left to play, the Wildcats were the leaders in all depart- ments. They piled up a total of 15 first downs to North's 9, and outgained the Vikings, 333 yards to 159. Scoring for the first time in the initial quarter, Central was always headed for a victory. Before the 3rd quarter had ended, the Wildcats had scored 40 points to the Bulldogs' lone touch- down. With Central's second and third squads playing to gain experience, the final quarter saw the already defeated Bulldogs score three times. The Central line and Nathaniel Jones, co-captain, who raced 83 yards on a kickoff' for the 3rd touch- down and scored three more times during the game, appeared to give the Bulldogs the most trouble during the contest. On Thanksgiving Day the same two teams, playing for the city championship, ended on practically the previous note. Again Central was victorious by a 25-15 score. Although being behind at one time 15-12, Central scored twice in the final stages to win. No Central team since 1935 had achieved the distinction of winning twice from Centennial in one year when a post season game was possible. CANON CITY Marching on to another of their victories, the Central Wildcats defeated the Canon City Tigers with a score of 25-0. As this was Central's home- coming game, floats were displayed at the half and the queen was crowned. COLORADO Our Central Wildcats met their only defeat of the season at the hands of the Colorado Springs Terrors in the last league game. The Terrors taking advantage of the breaks won by a score of 25-6. The first Springs' touchdown was made on the pickup of a Wildcat fumble as the gun sounded ending the first half. With less than three minutes of the 3rd quarter gone the Wild- cats drove 80 yards to tie the score 6-6. Then the Terrors on direct results of Central's fumbles scored 3 more times to clinch the South Central League title. PEECH Radio, a new vocational opportunity for Central students, was started here this year. The class has had its own half-hour radio show weekly over KCSJ. This studio work included acting, announcing, writing, directing, sound effects, and all the work which goes into producing a radio program. Blue Mask 8: Gavel is an older organization at Central. The course includes reading, acting, general speech making, and the production of one-act plays. Stagecraft, another new class at Central, was started the second semester. Members of the class are taught general knowledge of the things that go on behind the scenes. Remodeling of the stage and stage properties, and better lighting effects are some of the things undertaken. The main stage productions of the year are the Senior Play, the Junior Play, the Operetta, and the Vodevil. The purpose of the Senior Play is to earn money for the annual memorial given to the school by the seniors. The money taken in for the Junior Play goes for junior annual pictures and for the junior and senior prom. The music depart- ment uscs the funds from the operetta for other musical productions. The funds from the vodevil go to finance council. Making a typical broadcast are: Moore, Palmer, Lynch, Quinn, Sehnell, Helm. 'N Y ya vi. 'S X 5 Q13 A 1 t ' Er i f W aw r xx 5 A Www VM. fwmn.. Their skills and talents are aimed to enliven many a person's dreary day and give solace to others, but the greatest pleas- ure comes to the person himself. When he can get by him- self and play chords, rearrange music, and sing with the feeling he wants, he is happy. When a group does this together the product is music at its best. Such is Central's vocal department with a membership of about three hundred. Along with Mixed Chorus and Centralian Choir, the main choruses, there are three groups made up of Mixed Chorus members. These are Boys' Quar- tet, Octet, and Triple Quartet. With an all-girl mem- bership is the Triple Trio. Hours of the day are spent in practice time in room 209. Another part of the Music Department is the band. The band has over eighty members in which is the ves- tation of thousands of dollars in instruments and les- sone and literally years in time. Only the band gives out with music such as is heard at the football and basket- ball games. Instrumental in supplying entertainment to various groups in Pueblo and surrounding localities is the or- chestra. Playing many times during the year, it works hard to make its performances good. Of the sixty members most have had grade school training to lead up to the fun and pleasure in being in a high school orchestra. All of this time has been put to good use in the programs arranged and presented by the Music De- partment. Some of the presentations and the places where others have been made by various groups of the depart- ment at various times of the year are: The Christmas Pageant, Vodevilg Polio Benefit Showg Chamber of Com- merceg Rotary, Kiwanis, banquets, Thatcher, Pleasant View, and Keating schools: radio station KCSJg Teacher's Convention, Operettag Music Festival, assembliesg and last but not least, Baccalaureate and Commencement. There are three classes, two advanced and one beginning, composed of seniors who have the required average in English. This department assumes the responsibility for Central's publicity working in conjunction with the Star-Journal and Chieftain and outside papers such as the Denver Post. Through exchanges, The Central Times reaches all parts of the U. S. and overseas. Together with the printing classes the Journalism department has published the newspaper for 28 years and the Wildcat for 48 years. A major project of the Journalism department is the publishing of Central's yearbook. This book is financed in its entirety by the students of Central thru the sale of the yearbook and also the selling of space to different organizations. The business angle is handled by the business staff of the Journalism department. All picture layout and design is the work of the students. Fields of art offered are sketching, painting, commercial art, clay modeling, or crafts. All of these are done in the art studio along with many other projects. The department is divided into two classes, the beginners and the advanced. The beginners have a definite setup which must be carried out. This work consists of learning the principles of art. Upon entering their second year of art, they may apply these principles to various projects. Some of the things that they have carried out the past year are: designing and painting the backdrops, Christmas decorations, and posters. Bob Maize and Joyce Van Auken worked on the angel at the right to which Joyce is adding the finish- ing touches. The angel was used in the annual civic Christmas pag- eant which was presented on the front steps of Central. Theresa Ramirez is shown as she is work- ing on another project. 3 , ff, T! 5 3 il Q 3 3 9 , 4 , 5 4 f 1' xx' v. v- ink'-K. 6. 0' WAMMQMQ , K - 'fiwmh if ,,g,1 I FIRST PROJECT OF THE YEAR DY THE ART DEPARTMENT First projoct of tho year by tho art dL'D2H'tll10Dt shows C0ntral's newest backdrop, dvsignod by Bob Muizf' and used in the vodevil.
