Among the courses from which to choose maiors and minors are social sciences, mathematics, Latin, and Spanish: subiects pro- vided to help students cultivate an appreciation for the cultured side of life, are art, music, and dramatics. The practical phases of our future are ensured by the oppor- tunities offered in the home economics, welding, woodworking, diversified occupa- tions, R. O. T. C., and driving classes, while physical development is left to girls' and boys' gym classes. To keep up with the rapidly changing world and to provide every educational and social opportunity possible for Central students is the purpose of our principal, guidance staff, coaching staff, and teachers. fy ft Pfssffil' assi. us is 1' Vf' f .- Q A Miss Creta Barber Senior Clerk Mrs. Gloria Williams Junior Clerk Miss Georgiana Paripovich Principal Clerk Miss Betty .lean Cnsebeer Secretary to the Principal bps 'N l INV Illnupil of Ltnti il High Sci l UFFICE STAFF White tollar work for Central is done by the four members of the office staff. STUDE T CUUNCIL GUVERNMENT To give students experience in exercising the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship, the stu- dent council was organized in 1923. Student govern- ment by the student council and its corollary bodies has since proven itself of invaluable service to the students by whom the representatives were chosen, to the school, and to the community as a whole. One of the chief duties of the roll-room repre- sentatives each spring is the nomination from student requests of candidates for student council members. All pupils are then allowed to vote on county-owned, county-loaned voting machines to determine the vic- tors. It is from the newly-elected seniors that a com- bined session of the incumbent and in-coming councils elects two students to run for the office of student president. After a week's campaigning in conjunc- tion with the campaigns for Head Girl, the student body again votes for and elects its choice, Standing left to right: Joanne Perkins, Charlotte Stanko, Jack Ludlow, Harry Ward, Frank Taulli, presidentg Lane Koch, vice-presidentg Jim Divilbiss, Ed Mastro, Joe Mohorcich, sergeant-at-armsg Morton Weichsel, Dave Trevithick Joe Miller. Human Christmas Tree Freshman Reading Choir 0 R G A N I Z A T I 0 N S GIRLS' SUCIETIES Girls' societies of Central have projects that are useful to t-he community as well as the school. Each year these societies plan parties, Easter egg hunts, or gifts for the McClelland Home and various other community estab- lishments. Through such projects, members of the societies bring happiness to needy persons and also experience the joy that comes in helping others. Each society also participates in various school activities such as assemblies, the vodevil, and in planning home- coming Hoats. Owls society yearly presents its Valentine Sweetheart Assembly, during which time one of Central's senior boys is chosen Owl's sweetheart. Then on St. Patrick's Day Aletheorians society presents its annual assembly, while Clionians and Athenians societies p1'esent either a fashion show or an entertaining assembly sometime during the year. Thus by working and playing together these societies play an important part among Central's many organiza- tions. Buses have been chartered for out-of-town contests and pep assemblies have been presented several times dur- ing the year, one of which was a large outdoor demonstration sending the football team to the state semi-finals. The projects of the pep club are financed by the proceeds from the sale of blue shakers, football pencils, and pep dance tickets: some of this money has bought nine stadium bonds. Cats' Clan has two major undertakings during the school year. One is the Homecoming celebration, in which 104 members took part this year. Two Cats' Clan floats were among those entered in the parade, and prizes were awarded the winning entries. The larger of these undertakings is Recognition Day, an annual event which includes an assembly and a recep- tion in the gym for those recognized for outstanding achievement. These affairs are under the direction of Cats' Clan. CHEER LEADERS Thompson, Burton, Akiyama, Carlson, Wilson, Diaz. Iunior Bed Cross In any Colorado high school the primary purpose of the Junior Red Cross council is to serve as a liaison unit between the school and the Red Cross chapter headquarters. However, the Central Red Cross group has taken on the additional work of actual production projects. The council has secured the cooperation of Girls' Cabinet, social living classes, the home economics department, manual arts classes, and the art department in the production of stuffed animals for childreng tray favors and mats for local hospitals and the Fort Lyons veterans' hospitalg cookies and candies for orphanages, hospitals, the day nur- sery, and other local institutions. Council members have worked With the city-county Junior Red Cross council to coordinate work among the high schools as well as issue a monthly news bulletin for all interested citizens. The students have also helped in t-he gift box project and participated in the drive for operational funds for the senior organization. Central students have attended and participated in state conferences on the Junior Red Cross in educationg they have also been sent as delegates to the district leadership training camps sponsored by the Colorado chapters. Thus Central and the Junior Red Cross have worked together for their mutual benefits. Ileluate and forensic interest and participation at Central reached an all-time high in 1949-1950 with -15 students taking an active part in some type of inter-school speaking, The philosophy of Central's forensic program is to provide the fullest opportunity and resources to help students learn not what to think, but how to think and how to express opinions and ideas based on evidence and honest analysis in a convincing and constructive manner. These aims have lurougrht forth results in the various honors which Central has received-first place in delmate at the Colorado College invitational tournament, top honors in debate and oratory at the Aggies tournament, and the Volorado State Speech League and the culminating honor of having: been the only National Forensic League school in Colorado to automatically qualify for the NFL nationals in debate. ifirst, row: lVlartin, Epps, Greenwood, Akiyama. Each class has its own meetings. Joint meetings are held frequently where the girls find out what other classes are doing. Senior girls had as their project this year the making of doll clothes for the crippled children. The clubs are part of the Y. W. C. A, Every month they have inter-club council meetings where representatives from each school meet together. This year they lnade plans and held a Y-Teen Carnival. Girls do not have to be voted into this organization but merely come to the meetings and take an active part in its activities. The girls from both schools sell Easter tags each year. The clubs are often called on to help in the community. The girls help or plan themselves many activities that are held at the Y. W. C. A. The coloring of Easter eggs and an Easter egg hunt was given by the two schools for the crippled children. Installation of new officers takes place at the last of the year. Every year the Junior, Sophomore, and Freshmen girls plan the annual Senior Party for Senior girls in Y-Teens. This year it was a dessert-luncheon, Senior girls are presented with a small token of remembrance of their happy days ill Y-Teens. The self-expression and satisfaction gained through participation in any of the music, drama, or art activities has helped develop the personalities of all. For some students it will mean merely entertainment, and a better understanding of the finer things of life. DRAMA Dramatics classes are provided for the boys and girls who are interested in studying play productions and learning the little tricks that go into making of fine actors and actresses. Students are also given a chance to display their talents in the many assemblies put on by the different organizations. The big productions of the year consisted of the Junior Play, Old Doc , and the Senior Play, Seventeenth Summer , for which the casts worked many weeks. For their gift to the community at Christ- mas time, members from the entire vocal department gave an outdoor Christmas Pag- eant, and instead of the usual freshmen nativity scene, a Singing: Christmas Tree was featured in an assembly. In order to give musical Centralites a taste of opera, Down in the Valley was presented as the big: musical production of the year. Some are editors, some are reporters, some are photographers, and othe1's work on the business staff. Each job holds just as much importance as the other, and without the cooperation of one the whole department becomes upset. These people see that any activity or event that happens at Central gets written up for the Times. They inform outsiders about the life here at Central by sending stories to the Pueblo Star Journal and Chieftain, The Denver Post, Scholastic Roto, and the N. E. A. Journal. One of the biggest jobs of this de- partment, besides reporting! the news, is raising' the money to finance the Wildcat. The amount for this year's publication was 555,000 The staff sees that this money is used wisely to produce the best annual possible, Pictured above are members of one of the classes taking their final in Journalism. Here they are proving their ability as experienced reporters, by interviewing Colonel Smith on his trip to Germany. QUILL AND SCRULL The International Honorary Society har members of the Jour- nalism Departement is known as Quill and Scroll. The members of this society are selecteflon the basis of their ability iq discover news and write it up accurately and cnnclsely. Besides being able to write, they must have a tactiul and courteous' method of ape V preach in obtaining the news. Every experience encountered has -had an influence upon our ideas and concepts, helping us to formulate our future. We have endeavored to record on these pages each phase of lea1'ning, from the grade schools to the Hnal commencement day. We do not leave these ex- periences behind us to function as memories, but take each one with us as equipment to face the new life before us.
