Chemistry tells us that they are made of chemicals and formations that have been forming for thousands of years. Physics informs us that they could not have been arranged into a building without its help. Mathematics says there is no physics Without its contribution. It must have taken music in men's souls to create ma- chines of harmonious working. And art, what would have been accom- plished with out a plan? We must consider languages because no Work could be done Without vocal communication. We must have history to show us how things have been made for ages past. Following the trend of these civic groups, Central's societies have swung in the past few years from a program of entertainment to that of service to the school and the community. All charity work during the year is carried on by the various societies. Baskets of fruit, vegetables, and canned goods were distributed at Thanks- giving and Christmas to needy families. Many societies held Christmas parties or gave toys and other gifts to the McClelland orphanage and the Lincoln home. Ticket sales for pay assemblies and vodevil are carried on by mem- bers of the various organizations. Each society also takes its part in plan- ning assemblies and furthering school spirit through floats, decorations, and participation in other school activities. Many of these organizations have the further task of participating with other schools in contests, tournaments, and other forms of com- petition. The diierent groups partici- pate not only in school functions, as- semblies, parades, music festivals, and other entertainment, but also in civic programs. The Music Depart- ment gives pupils a chance to enjoy and express musical talent in either or both of the two different fields, vo- cal and instrumental. Acting in the dramatic productions at Central is not necessarily confined to the dramatic classes. Anyone who is talented has a chance to try out for the major productions, While any so- ciety may sponsor plays in assemblies. Artistic ability at Central is fos- tered by actual experiences in paint- ing oif stage-settings, posters, Christ- mas decorations, and civic contribu- tions such as Red Cross Work. To those who are perhaps not so talented, a chance is given to learn art appre- ciation and color schemes. The Fine Arts Department at Central provides our school and com- munity with their conceptions of the finer things of life. , , , . ' .
