Tedmon, one who typifies scientific research and knowledge, yet has not lost interest in the personalities of his students. His interest and sympathetic encouragement have won the friendship and admiration of those who have had the privilege of knowing him. 7 GD The Wildcafs Lair With a victorious S-s-s Meow the mighty Wildcat re- turns to his lair after the fray. It is here he is inspired to go forth and iight for spoils with which to adorn it. When this King of Beasts approaches, all the other animals of the neighboring dens, kennels, and cages prepare for a terrific battle. If they are able to draw blood at all, it is only after a mighty conflict. Whether the spoils be material trophies or honor and glory Won by fair play and good sportsman- ship, he is always eager to scratch and bite his way through the foe to bring them back to the lair. 1 8 I 65 1 i l n Central Victory Song Dear old Central, We're loyal to you. You bet, it's dear old Central, The White and the Blue. With all your banners bright, and Always so glorious, You'll be victoriousg On to battle! Shouting as we enter the fray: Go to it, Wildcats! Fight and you'll win the day! Yes, we're behind you, Wildcats, all the Way. Go forward then to Victory. - Rah! Rah! M s L 17 J Qsifsfj Q IS-J F53 LAWRENCE HEWITT, Student President The Student Council Student Council activities have gone forward during the year under the capable, diligent leadership of Lawrence Hewitt, the student president. He replaced Milton Finney who was forced to relinquish the student presidency and his Council membership on account of ill-health. The Cats' Clan, which was organized by last year's Student Council, began to function in the Fall. With -the aid of the Cats' Clan the Council conducted the best home-coming parade ever seen at Central. The management of the Vodevil was efficiently carried on. A spirited contest was held between the boys and the girls for the sale of tickets. The boys, who lost, gave a dancing party for the girls, the winners. The proceeds of the Vodevil constitute the Students' Activity Fund. A joint meeting with the Centennial A. C. O. was held, and resolutions for better spirit between the two schools were drawn up and read in the assemblies of each. Assembly speakers were also exchanged with Centennial and Colorado Springs to promote good will. The Student Council brought several students whose actions endangered the reputation of the school before the Student Court for trial. The annual Clean-Up Campaign was conducted, opening with an assembly put on by the Council. Posters were placed throughout the school, and prizes were given for the best posters submitted illustrating the Campaign. During' this campaign the slogan used was: Make Central the Cleanest School in the State. Charters were granted to the Agora Debating Society, the Commercial Club, and Stylus Club. The Council members sold Handbooks. The plan now is to publish the Handbook only once every two years, adding a supplement the year the book is not issued. Howard Woodrum and his committee have planned an unusually complete and attractive Handbook for 1931-32. The Council decorated the school at Christmas. This was an innovation, and the idea will probably be continued in years to come. Seventy meetings were held this year. The year ended with the election of new Council mem- bers who were installed at the formal installation service on May 18. That same evening the annual banquet of the Council was held in the school cafeteria. sLv u 1 , L181 n4jf3 9f-, , ,gi4, ,,fj5gNleg,L- . f ef14gL e gfi I f.X'jXlQx., ,i,: '! fi Catherine Crozier, Miss McNally, Alfred Bench, Mr. Haaff, Helen Kendall. The 1931 Class Will and y Testament We, the Senior class of Central High School, sorely lacking in knowledge and credit, do declare this to be our Last Will and' Testament, hereby revoking any and all wills, codicils, and other testamentary disposition by us, collectively or individually, hereto- fore anytime made. After all our just debts and obligations are paid, discharged, and otherwise elimin- ated, we bequeath the following: Charlotte Sullivan wills her beloved brother Orville to the Junior girls. Milton Finney leaves his pull with Miss Reid to Paul Deems. Valetta Schmidt bequeaths her dignity, soft voice, and demure ways to Ellen Gorden. Walter Smith bestows his unpleasant disposition upon Bob Moore. Bart Elich relinquishes his finger wave to John Hoody or any other Junior who can prove he needs it in a worse way. Frank Ritchie wills his Caveman tactics with girls to Wells Butnette. Exa Woodyard leaves her never-ending chatter to Gertrude Templeton. Bob Cummings wills all his women to Raymond Caten. Charles Rosco reluctantly bequeaths his space in the office to Walter Seagle. Earl Allen leaves his indifference to women to Arthur Porter. Barbara Broome bestows her ability to vamp men upon Bethel Pugh. Alfred Bench wills his long suit of flannel underwear to Perry Keen, Jr. Wilma Martin leaves her excess avoirdupois to Susan Holmes. At Bill Carlile's request Catherine Crozier wills her Student council membership to Julia Craig. Dorothea Toedter wishes to bestow her tall dignity and ability to see in a crowd upon Virginia Bartley. Lawrence Hewitt, after trying in vain for two years to get rid of his long string of feminine admirers left him by some cruel Senior of '29, does now bequeath them to any six Junior boys who are willing to take them over. To the faculty and student body the class leaves the peace and quiet that pervaded the halls and classrooms on May 5th, In testimony whereof, we have hereunto set our seal this 12th day of May, 1931. The Times Staff Journalism classes of Central have done a great deal during the past year. Be- ginning journalism classes devoted their time to text book study and to practical writing of news stories which were printed in the down town papers. Quarterly projects were- also required, consisting of an individually printed and edited newspaper and a term paper written on some special phase of the journalism field. Advanced journalism students edited the Central High Times, issuing' it to the student body twice a month. Projects for this course included the grading of a high school newspaper according to the point system of the Colorado University Journalism department, and the editing of the Pueblo Star-Journal by the Times Staff. Campaigns, such as courtesy and clean-up, were sponsored by the Times Staff. Special editions for the Central-Centennial football game, for the operetta, and for the Senior play were issued, as well as for the Christmas and Thanksgiving holidays. The Times has taken part in two newspaper contests, a national one conducted lby the National Scholastic Press Association, and a state one supervised by the Journalism Department of the University of Colorado. Journalism students have also taken part in national editorial writing contests. The Quill and Scroll, a national honorary society for high school journalists, is the School club composed entirely of journalists. Football Season Central opened its football season against the Trinidad aggregation. The game was loosely played, as the opening game of any season is likely to be. Many com- binations of players were tried out for the defense and scoring ability, and nearly all the fsquad got into action. Central came out on the long -end of ia 12 to 0 score. In the second game of the season the fans had a good chance to be thrilled for it was 'one of those last minute victories that seem so good to the Winners and so hard for the losers to take. Both teams played excellent football, and with ofne minute to play the score stood Central 13 and Boulder 7 when a pass was intercepted on the goal line, and the Boulder receiver dashed the whole length of the field to score. Sl! 4 I l92l 63 Central played Walsenburg as though there was no opposition on the field. The final score of the contest was Central 58, Walsenburg 0. Every member of the team out-rushed his opponent, and substitutions were frequent. In the Canon City-'Central g.ame the Blue and White neared the goal line many times only to be repelled. Only once did they score and that on .a lone two points for a safety. Canon City opened up' a barrage of brilliant trick plays and was able to push across three touchdowns. The final score was Canon City 18, Central 2. Central journeyed up to Salida to participate in a league game, the score of which was Salida 16, Central 6. In the first quarter Carlile ripped oft' a gain of 50 yards for Central's one and only scoring threat during the day. The half ended with score Central 6, Salida 0. But alas, a determined Spartan team came on the Held and through two touchdowns and a field goal brought Ivictory to themselves. The Colorado Springs game was a very close, hard-fought battle. Kasic started the fireworks b-y running the opening kickof through the entire Colorado Springs team for a touchdown. Try for extra point was blocked. The Terrors then came to, and with a great rush carried the ball across the goal line for a touchdown. The try for extra point failed, but it was awarded as Central was offside. From then on the two teams fought on even terms through the rest of the' game. The feature of the game was Kasic's passing and Markowski's line plunging. The final score was Colo- rado Springs 7, Central 6. The Central-Centennial game was the big feature of the current season, for al- though Centennial was scheduled to Win the game, the dope was upset, and Central came off with the big end of a 20 to 0 score. The game had hardly started when Cen- tennial, fumbling on the opening kickoff, lost possession of the ball on approximately the ten yard line. In three more plays a big six appeared by the side of the Central placard, and a moment later a seven was placed in its place. Coach Twitchell of Cen- tennial tried to pull the Knute Rockne system of starting shock troops. They cer- tainly gave the Red Sand !White a shock, for Centennial, attempting to punt two plays after the next kickoff, found that Sabio Concialdo was on the other side of the goal line with the pigskin in his hands, having blocked the punt. I'n a moment there appeared by the side of the placard bearing Central on it a large 14. Centen'niial's first team was now entered in the contest, but once more Central scored, this time ont a long run by Markowski. The try for extra point failed. The game ended in triumph for the Wildcats with the convincing' score of 20 to 0. SL-4 I I 1931 FW Vernon Drain Captain Drain, captain of the 1931 football team, was feared and respected by his opponents. After the Central- Centennial game he was selected as the most valuable player for Central. He always played a hard determined game which Won the admiration of the stands as vveH as the esteern of his team mates. Sleepy's sweater has three bars and the envied star,a tribute to a great athlete. l94l 6? Sam Mulay Captain-Elect Sam Mulay, Central's dependable center, was elected to head the foot- ball team of 1931 in the capacity of captain. This year Mulay was shifted to center from guard, his regular position. He could always be counted on to get his men and to make his passes true. .Sam has played for the past three years, and this coming season will make his fourth. Every- one feels that the choice of Sam was indeed a good one, and 'that he will serve his team and the school loyally. 95 X ff, I 'W 'iw 'W' - L I. .I wel raw W W I i I 1' if W W W In U W E981 I 3. 1931 Basketball Team Colorado State Champions Once again Central's star basketball team went to the State Tournament and brought the State Championship to Pueblo. This is the second time in five years that Mr. Huling has coached a State Championship team. All through the season there was only one team, the Bulldogs, who caused any great difficulty for the Wildcats on their triumphant march to victory. All other teams were defeated by decisive scores. Central, who won first place in the South Central League and was later defeated in the Divisional Tournament by Centennial, triumphed in one of the most interesting and exciting State Tournaments ever held. For the first time in Colorado's basketball history two teams from Pueblo went side by side to the final game of the contest. Both first and second places were brought to Pueblo. Every Centralite is proud to sing the praises of one of the finest group of boys that ever played basketball in any school. They made a name, not only for their school but for themselves, which will not soon be forgotten. The manly way in which they conducted themselves, their sportsmanship, and the clean games they played impressed boosters and op- posing' rooters alike. In years to come when Central is applauding- new champion- ship teams she will look back with pride upon the splendid record of this squad. l f' I 99 1 W 1 ' .X A, N, Af , X ' X - , , NN 'N X If 4 l r l 1 MR. CHICK MR. HULING BASKETBALL CUACIIES When the basketball team Won the State Championship and the glory and fame which goes with it, they did not do it alone. In the background were two men, urging them on, encouraging them, watching and caring for them, seeing that nothing inter- fered with their progress. Without Mr. Huling and Mr. Chick's coaching they could never have reached their goal. This is the third time in ten years that Mr. Huling has entered a team in the state finals. Mr. Chick, assistant coach, did excellent work with the reserves and in helping Mr. Huling with the first team's problems. CAPTAIN GEORGE KASIC George played fast, spectacular basketball, at the same time exhibiting a cool, consistent game. This was his third and last year of basketball for the Wildcats. x j X f100j F55 ED MOREHART, Forward: SAM MULAY, Guard: DAN LALICH, Center VERNON DRAIN, Guard: GEORGE KASIC, Guardg BRUCE LITTON.
