Centralites explore grammar, literature Central's English department, under the di- rection of Mrs. Mary Myers, encourages students to explore all phases of writing and literature so that they may learn to express their feelings and ideas accurately. As each student advances, he is led to discover his own abilities and develop them to their fullest capacity. V As freshmen and sophomores, Centralites learn the fundamentals of grammar and begin to explore literature. Juniors, in addition to reviewing grammar, may learn to express them- selves through public speaking or acting by studying speech or drama. Seniors are offered a choice of English 12, drama, speech, or English literature. In English literature, students study the works of Shakespeare and other great writers, in order to acquire a greater appreciation and understanding of literature. To build interest, students are offered the op- portunity to participate in national, as well as local, competition in writing and speaking. Many Centralites have received recognition through these contests. In these ways, Central's English department strives to provide its students with the back- ground in English necessary for effective speech and creative writing.
