One of the most practical and rewarding fields of education offered in a high school curriculum is that of Commerce. The courses included in the Commerce de- partment prepare students for careers in secretarial work and business, as well as giving practical skills for the college-bound. Carol McC1rew dictates to her shorthand class as it strives to increase the speed on shorthand takes. 20 The familiar words prepare to take a 10-minute timed writing are typical of the instructions given in typing classes. Besides speed writings, students learn the functions of the many parts of the typewriterg how to type business letters and business formsg and the correct manuscript form for themes. Commerce majors re- ceive, in general business, the rudiments for a sound foun- dation of business practicesg they puzzle over debits and assets in bookkeepingg they take dictation and figure transcription speed in shorthandg they acquaint themselves with the operation of other business office machines in business Englishg and they keep up-to-date with daily math problems in business arithmetic. All in all, the students leave Central's Commerce Department well prepared for a future in business and with necessary skills for college work. Martha Geha, Linda Imm, and Penny Batley familiarize them- selves with modern business machines.

What's The Homemaking Department prepares girls for roles as future homemakers. In the courses of Homemaking I and II girls learn the fundamentals of sewing and cooking. During the school year the classes cook, plan meals, study interior decorating, sew practical garments, and learn the essentials of child care. The Homemaking II class of 30 girls organizes and handles a great deal of the extra work of the department's activities. The girls in this group serve refreshments at faculty meetings, select a gift for the school, and plan the occasion when students' parents visit the department to view the work of the classes. This spring the classes held a style show displaying some of the near-professional sewing the girls had done. It was a fitting climax to a wonderful year in Home Economics. Cooking? 21
