Sept. s, 1941 l arrived at Central High School in St. Joseph, Mo., today at eight olclock to regis- ter. There was quite a crowd of boys and girls in the office. They all seemed ex- cited and an air of happiness seemed to be everywhere. Miss Cecilia Freedman, who works in the office, took me and introduced me to the principal, Miss Calla E. Varner. l was surprised to find a woman as the princi- Six pal, of the school because in my country, We have men as principals. Miss Varner appealed to me as being a most congenial person. My first impres- sion of her was that of a well educated and dignified individual. She seemed very understanding and her attitude implied that she enjoys working with young peopleg her sincere interest in even the most- trivial matter if it concerns the Wel- fare of another person is why Miss Varner is so highly respected by both students and faculty.
