HISTORY OF CENTRAL C1-:N'rR,xL- 1 86 1 A small, insignificant-looking frame building located at Tenth and Felix streets held and suckled the embryo of the now mature Central High School. lfor one term in 1861 and fol- lowing the Civil XYar from 1864 to 1866 this school taught the very classes that later were organized into the St. joseph High School, which name. however, with the founding of Benton High in 1910, was changed to Central High School. Cla N TRA1.-1 866 After an increase in the allotment of taxes for public education in 1866, the fee of one dol- lar a month for the high school instruction was abolished, and faculty members and the student body were set up in a new building on the pres- ent site of St. Joseph Junior College, Tenth and Edmond streets. Here, from 1866. the authori- tative date of the beginning of Central, to 1895, Centralites were educated, strugglingly, but bravely. C1iN'rR.x1.-1895 In 1895 the new three-storied brick structure was built at 'l'hirteenth and Olive streets to house the growing components of the high school. Here. for thirty-five years. school life flourished, the faculty grew to forty-four and the count of the student body crossed the thou- sand mark. and the conditions in the crowded building proved inadequate. C li N 'rim 1.-1 1 13 3 So, in the early months of IQ33. Central re- established itself for the fourth time in this present building. a twentieth century concep- tion of modern appointments. fine landscaping. and sturdy building construction.
