More than a concept One of the oldest traditions at Central High School is the Friendship Chain. An anchor was purchased by the class of l902. Since l928, every senior class has added a link to the chain. After the class of i982 adds their link, there will be 54 links to the chain. The Appeal to the Great Spirit has become known as a symbol of pride for Central students. The statue itself is a gift from the class of l923. The marble base is from the class of l953. The plaque on the front of the base is a donation from the class of l966. The original statue stands in front of the, Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Senior rings are ordered each year by the junior class. Unlike other schools, Central has maintained the same basic ring design for 28 years. The only change has been substituting a picture of the old building with a picture of a brave. Central owns a copyright on the ring design. As years go on, students need something to hehv capture and hold on to their memories, therefore, each year the Tom Tom is published . . . and the beat goes on . . . A few years back, their building was our school, Tulsa Central High. That is where our Pride, Tradition, Spirit, Love, and our Beat began. No matter where, old Central CPublic Service Companyj or here at Central High School at 33rd and West Edison, Central students still show their Pride, Love, Loyalty, and Spirit. As years progress, Central students will continue to come here each day to express their lo ve, dedication, and loyalty to their school and, of course, to get their education. We wore our red and white Koopsl Crimson and Creamj, funny hats and ties, decorated doors, bashed cars, and screamed our lungs out at the bonfire, The mighty JUNIOR Class pulled away from the rest of the Braves in the door decorations, winning all three. The theme was 'RUIN THE RANGERS. Mrs. Chee 's homeroom was the winner, followed by Mrs. Felible 's homeroom, 2nd place, Mr. Paulson 's homeroom, 3rd place. Chants of 83-3-3-3 filled the gymnasium, also we've got spirit, we've got more, and we're alive in 85 were screamed by many sophomores and freshmen. At the pep assembly on Thursday, the winning class was announced: The Senior Class - l982. Of 3562 the class chose five responsible members as officers, and twenty-four members to serve as their Junior Board. Mrs. Nelson was the Junior Sponsor. These people met twice a month to discuss assemblies, activities, and fundraisers. To begin their successful year, they sold Calendars called Calendar of Events. Their next fundraiser, a first at Central, was a great success. The class of l983 sold Halloween Treat Bags. Selling over ICXXZ they made a great profit. The mighty Juniors also participated in the play campaign and collected newspapers for the newspaper drive. The Junior Class is definitely a hard working and very spirited class. In only a few months, the Junior Class will be The Senior Class, but no matter who, they are still THE CLASS OF 1983, and that is what counts! 5 x wax .. A A vi XA -Q. ! Junior varsity went to Oklahoma University in Norman, and they received one excellent and three superior ribbons, and a spirit stick. Early in October there was the small crisis of switching sponsors. The old sponsor, Mrs. Foster, was leaving Central. The squad continued in limbo until Mrs. Sutherland I with strong ideas about reviving school spiritj took over. Too many people don 't realize the work involved in being a cheerleader. Of course there 's some amount of prestige involved in wearing those Nifty red and white uniforms, but it's no fun getting up and yelling your lungs out at eight in the morning during your summer vacation, or coming home hoarse and cold after a November football game. This year at Central we voted at the beginning of the l98l-82 school year to change from CAST CCentral Acting and Stage Troupej to Thespians. This year we have about 23 students at large and around IO chartered members. To be chartered a student must earn at least I0 points by participating on stage and backstage. The Thespian Society here at Central didn't receive their troupe number until mid-January. But many of the students helped out in any way they could, either by working backstage, selling tickets. or by performing in the many plays Central has to offer during the school year. Not only did they work on the stage at Central, but they also helped in workshops at the University of Tulsa and went to local plays in Tulsa. We kept the traditions of Red Brick and the Spring Banquet but also helped advance the Fine Arts week by performing a One-Act play. The students of Thespians would like to thank Mrs. Chee for all her help in the performances we presented on the Central stage. Money was raised by candy sales, donations, selling seat cushions and cook books etc. Central students worked hard and long to collect money for the marquee. The Braves held tight to the ball and ran for a 2014 victory that night, ending a record-breaking 55-game losing streak. The games that followed were exciting. With the Braves fired up and the crowds always cheering, Central fought hard and would not fall easily. From tag to tackle, fumbles to formation, or faded fields to Skelly Stadium, the Central Braves experienced it all with their fans supporting them all the way. The Braves' unique size, enthusiasm, and spirit laid the foundation for the most outstanding season Central has had in a long time. Congratulations! Before the season started, the area coaches were asked by the press to identify the teams they thought would make the top ten in the Indian Nations Conference. Central was picked second by the majority of the coaches, and the Braves proved their ability in the following seasons games. At the beginning of the basket- ball season the Braves battled many teams, but one of the most outstanding games was the game against the Washington Hornets. Many players on both teams displayed fine skills in handling the ball, and made us all proud to be cheering on such fine teams. Senior players this year were Eugene Jones, Marvail Dogans, Greg Busby, Reggie Young, Joe Lewis, Keith Palmer. All displayed a true quality of sportsmanship and never let us down. Leading the team in their fight against the foes were Senior starters, Leigh Walker, Rae Lynn Cooper, and Jane Smith. These girls proved the talent they had was unmatchable and genuine, and throughout the season they kept the team going and would not let them down. Other players on the team showed their support by playing together as one and not giving up if they lost. The Lady Braves met many fine teams this year and traveled with the boys team to different parts of the state and to Springdale, Arkansas. Both boys and girls were defeated there, but the games were, nevertheless, exciting and unforgettable. The girls team did their best this year and overcame many of their shortcomings, but all in all it was a successful year for this Varsity team. Coach Fisher, who was one of the boys' varsity coaches, helped these young men develop their ability to be a fine team, made up of fine players who ha ve the know how and drive to be good ball players on future varsity teams. The Junior Varsity was not only a fine ball team but the fact that there is a J. V. team hehwed young Centralites - Freshmen and Sophomores - become involved with sports and activities at Central. Winning and being the best are often the goals of many teams and that is what competitive sports emphasizes. It fits right in there with Mom's apple pie and hotdogs. It is a well liked sport ranging from pee-wee to major leagues, and we must say that the Braves' baseball team is one of the best. Baseball has always been one of the more popular spring sports at Central and one of the better teams. With not many returning Seniors the baseball team is young, but experienced and ready for challenge. They have beat what are said to be some of the best teams in the city and this year were even more determined. The Braves' baseball team is coached by Terry Brinkman, who has been the team's coach for the past several years. Even though Coach Brinkman worked the team hard they treated him with respect and admiration. The team this year had one of the best pitchers in the city, Jesse Renschler, as was stated by a fellow teammate. A second pitcher for the team, Kenny Troxell, and catcher, Kevin Moore, did outstanding jobs as well Outfielders and infielders, Mark Blair, Richie Hunt, Marty Hayward, Charlie Blevins, and Terrence Cherry, were kept busy preventing the other team from scoring as were other players on the team. Coach Brinkman and his baseball team did an outstanding job this season and having only lost a few seniors will do even better, it is feared by other teams, next season. Human lives are taken daily, and people say, Well, it happens. One attempt on a life was not taken so lightly. On March 362 l98l, the newly elected president of the Unit- ed States, Ronald Reagan, became the target of a would- be assassin. John W. Hinkley was in the crowd outside Washington 's Hilton Hotel as the President and company were leaving. Hinkley took aim and fired, injuring Michael Deaver, Thomas Delanaty, Tim McCarthy, and James Brady, as well as President Reagan. His motive: to win the heart of actress Jodie Foster with this historical deed. On May I3, l98l, Mehmet Ali Agca attempted to take the life of Pope John Paul ll while he was driving around St. Peter's Square in his Popemobile. The gunman fired a pistol, hitting the Pope's abdomen and one hand and leaving two women bleed- ing in the street. getting so much resistance from behind No, the Equal Rights Amend- ment hasn't been ratified, and at times it seems as though the Constitution only applies to half the country, but after l9l years, one woman has beaten that system. Sandra Day O'Connor, a fifty-one year old appellate court judge from Phoenix and mother of three, became the first woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court. Right-to-lifers thought this was an absolutely absurd idea, featuring Mrs. O'Connor's beliefs on the Human Life Amendment. During her confirmation hear- ing, she stated, For myself, it fabortionj is offensive. stop now, what's that sound? On September l9, l98l, in New York's Central Park, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle performed a benefit concert before 4062000 Sixties veterans and fans. The concert was inten- tionally to be solo. Simon would do the concert and work Artie into it. He thought it would be nice to bring his ex-partner out for a few numbers, but decided that wasn 't good enough. The show became the reunion of the decade. The sponsors of the con- cert were Warren Hirsch and Fiorucci with proceeds from t-shirt sales going to the New York Parks Department. A video of the show is to be released. It will be directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, the director of Let it Be. No indication has been made that they will once again be a duo, but their old tunes will always keep us feeling groovy. . . . into your life it will creep .. . Bob Marley, the King of Reggae, died in his sleep on May ll, l98l, just hours after receiving treatment for brain, lung, and liver cancer. He was one of the most influential musicians of the past twenty years, with record sales well into the millions. He not only received recognition from fans, but from famous musicians, such as Mick Jag- ger, Eric Clapton, Paul Simon, and others. Open your eyes and look within, Are you satisfied with the life you're living? We know where we're going We know where we're from We're leaving Babylon We're going to our father's land. Bob Marley, Exodus - l977. . .. the man comes and takes you away Sure, fairy tales are only in books, right? Guess again! Last July, Prince Charles of Wales took Lady Diana Spencer as his lawfully wedded wife while 750 million throughout the world watched. The marriage took place at Sir Christopher Wren's St. Paul's Cathedral. After the ceremony, the Prince and Princess were taken to Buck- ingham Palace for breakfast, driven in the royal carriage - what else? Congratulations were again in order for Charles and Diana as they are soon to be parents. Some of us were lucky enough to witness a fairy tale take place during our lifetime. ... everybody look what's goin' down We weren 't wearing mini skirts or pants made out of American flags, but we had our Polos. Thanks, Ralph, you're okay. While Ralph Laren was making a mint from tees and button downs, Bill Blass was making designer chocolates. The price of Jelly Bellies rose and so did Petty albums-almost. l98l-the year of Astre. The Stones toured the United States. Lucciano Pavorotti came to Tulsa. Alan Alda came to Oklahoma-purposefully. The Oklahoma Congress defeated the purpose. Christopher Cross won five Grammies. John McEnroe became the man we love to hate when he defeated five-time Wimbledon winner Bjorn Borg and thrashed him to bits at the U.S. Open. Deborah Fountain, Miss New York, was excluded from competing for Miss U.S.A. when it was discovered she was padding her bra. Air traffic controllers and baseball players went on strike. A nine-year-old boy robbed a bank in New York. Dan Rather took Walter Cronkite's place. Laura left General Hospital. Carol Burnett won a libel suit against National Enquirer. Billie Jean King was sued for palimony. During her anti- smoking campaign, Brooke Shields stated, Smoking kills. If you're killed, you've lost a very important part of your life. Bobby Sands starved in Ireland. Natalie Wood drowned. Jodi Foster received letters from a would-be assas- sin. The middle square took his final turn. The Rubik's Cube became the hula hoop of the Eighties. pk 0 of t.,lx i ff: A f J , 5,1 f 'i,,3r , Mffffi gf if , - 1 MI- f wwf , I 'r' fd A f - J' , NMI '34 5 ' 3 , . Each of these young gentlemen left the basketball court, basketball in hand, proud, and loved by many CHS fans. As our Braves walked out the gym door, they waved their goodbyes to all, knowing they would never play basketball for the Braves again. They will be greatly missed, especially Eugene, with his great ball handling, through the legs, around and behind the back and of course his great field goals. Marvail with his free throws, rebounds and his slam dunks. Reggie with his rebounds, free throws and his marvelous steals. Greg, Keith and Joe added the final touch to a winning team. Our members consisted of a varsity cheer- leader, a junior, band members, sr. board members, swimmers, football players, news- paper members, and a few punk rockers. It has been a real challenge working with them, but I wouldn 't ha ve changed it for the world. I would also like to say thanks to: Fire Station Number I4 for cooling our red hot braves off Our wonderfully understanding teachers around deadline time. To Brad Belvin and .leff Frizell for their fantastic artistic abilities. To our red headed friend and the rest of the gang at Petersen's Photography.
