Central's defense gang tackles Washington's Kenneth Williams. Braves had the state's number one defense for seven weeks. CENTRAL DEFENSE COOLS MUSKOGEE DEFENSE HOLDS LAWTON SCORELESS ROGERS STIFLED BY DEFENSE The newspaper loved us. l guess the work was worth it. lt was a great thrill knowing we held the state's No. 1 team scoreless. We had some outstanding players, Scott Warden was All- State and Tulsa Tribune Player of the Year. Paul Harrington, Cameron Cummins, Ed Thomas, Jack Bruner and John Johnson were All-Conference. Our coaches were great. They worked hard to improve us as a team. Coach Wagoner pushed us hard, yelling, showing us better ideas, demonstrating new techniques. He made us realize more than anything else, the price you had to pay to be a winner. And we were good. Lawton and Muskogee were our best games. We had to give the offense a boost to score, but we managed. The end of our season was a disappointment, we failed to win our conference. When they told us we would be in the playoffs we had two real hard practices and everybody was ready to play, then we were disqualified, leaving our season at 4-4-2.
