D5 .5 ,wma W3 W- WMS M X 3, Individual talent made a lot of difference. Some of us really excelled. Scott and Paul were linemen of the week. Tommy and Flhodell dominated the basketball court, and Jim Adair collected a chest full of medals. Kenny Moore even led the city with his .415 batting average. Jerry Cole dominated his weight class. We lived together and worked together. We shared the exhaustion, the pain, the enthusiasm, and finally the victory. 9 Eight o'clock, the bell rings and school begins. We're here for another day. Somedays l wonder why I even bother to come, but it seems like all the excitement happens when l'm gone. lt's not too bad going to classes on Wednesdays, knowing that we float fourth hour. I think the best thing about the class is the people, but they say l'Il appreciate it someday. Hey! Why are all the wall's green? x v i av fm ,f- ' ,,40 ' Even after a long, hot summer school starts too soon. It's hard to go back . . .but you know there will be lots of things you can do with your old friends. The end of school seems so far away. . .Winter is kind of still and quiet. Sometimes you can hear some guy's basketball ringing through the cold streets. With spring comes a restlessness, maybe from inactivity for such a long time. When it comes, school doesn't seem too important. Finally we're free to go. It's summer. lt's hot. lt's over. 13 ,Q it-'fi f X 5 X-'L ff Q. They shaped and reflected the world we found ourselves in. 17 SD0rts Warden Harrington Weaver Bruner il 19 Most of the season we played in the defense's shadow. You know, the headlines and stories all said how great the defense was. We started real well, scoring ten points against Rogers but then fell down, depending on our defense to pull us through. Against Hale we scored twenty points and almost won the game. In the Washington game we scored two touchdowns but lost the conference championship game. John Johnson and Rick Dodson received special recognition from the coaches' Conference Committee. They were the only seniors and so - maybe we'll show our experience next year. We worked hard, hitting our dummies and pushing the blocking sled, each week telling ourselves we would move the ball and we finally did. Sometimes we felt like we let the rest of the team down, like against Okmulgee and Edison, but we finally moved the ball against Hale and Washington. . . even though we lost. Football Offense Quarterback Flick Dodson surveys his team before putting the ball into play. 20 ku fi: if Sophomore Darryl Colbert tights for yardage against Rogers. CENTRAL DEFENSE COOLS MUSKOGEE DEFENSE HOLDS LAWTON SCORELESS ROGERS STIFLED BY DEFENSE The newspaper loved us. l guess the work was worth it. lt was a great thrill knowing we held the state's No. 1 team scoreless. We had some outstanding players, Scott Warden was All- State and Tulsa Tribune Player of the Year. Paul Harrington, Cameron Cummins, Ed Thomas, Jack Bruner and John Johnson were All-Conference. Our coaches were great. They worked hard to improve us as a team. Coach Wagoner pushed us hard, yelling, showing us better ideas, demonstrating new techniques. He made us realize more than anything else, the price you had to pay to be a winner. And we were good. Lawton and Muskogee were our best games. We had to give the offense a boost to score, but we managed. The end of our season was a disappointment, we failed to win our conference. When they told us we would be in the playoffs we had two real hard practices and everybody was ready to play, then we were disqualified, leaving our season at 4-4-2. ni I- ' Af .J JEFF BITKSO GREG MADDUX TOBY ZWINGELBERG xii -.,,,,,, wi' CAMERON CUMMINS KENNETH GIBSON TERRY GRACE PAUL HARRINGTON DALE REAGAN BUDDY SLEMP JOHN TU RNBU LL SCOTT WARDEN First Flow: Harvey Johnson, Jeff Bitkso, Ed Thomas, Buddy Slemp, Toby Zwingelberg. I put a lot of my time and hard work into it for what? I remember the day that the mercury reached over the 100' mark. There had to be something out there that made me do it, it wasn't the crowds, because there weren't any. It wasn't the student body, because I don't think they cared. What do you expect from a team that could boast only two victories from last season? Sure we lost to Edison and Memorial, but each player held his own against his opponents. We could depend on Rozel for a win when needed. Carson and Wade battled into 2nd in conference doubles. In all, we went out, had a good time, and finished with a 10- 6 season. Golf John Lawson, Wes Burton, Flick Dodson, Scott Warden, Steve Tye, John Brown 46 Steve Tye takes a practice swing while the team looks on. Golf captain, Rick Dodson follows through with a 225 yard drive. Golf requires a lot more of a psychological attitude than physical endurance. You don't have to be super strong to hit a golf ball 200 yards, but it takes hours on hours of hard practice. The better knowledge you have of a certain golf course the better you'lI be. Altogether, we had three new men, a fair golf course, and the most important, a winning golf season under Coach Howard. 47 ,K m -F? And then I stopped and thought where I'd be without it. Where would anyone be without communication? Without being able to express his thoughts to another human being. Sometimes I even had a hard time expressing myself. Expository and Descriptive Writing gave me a chance to work on that. Mythology and New Testament were always interesting. With the world becoming smaller every day, a foreign language was something I might really need. But then language never stopped being grammar. If 95 Social Studies History was one of my favorite classes. . .learning about ancient people and ancient cultures. . .seeing empires build and fall. . .To some people history has no meaning, and to me dates are just trouble, and the tests were hard sometimes, but still, I liked the lectures. I couldn't get real values and reasons why people acted the way they did out of the textbooks, so that made the lectures the most valuable part of the class to me. Jim Hewgley campaigns at a Social Studies forum Mathematics Math was always my hardest class, working with figures, planes, circles, cosines, and acute angles. It always seemed hard at first, working for the right answer, but with help from my teacher, sometimes I found it. With math, either you know the answer or you don't. I think math tests should be abolished. Still, I think it's one of the most important classes I have. Tim Jones listens intently as Mr. Butts explains hyperbolas M. Kathy Mercer, Vince Jenkins, and Kathy Hood struggle along with geometric proofs. 96 Fried Elliott demonstrates the principles of ocean waves to Mrs. Snyder's physics class. awww' Steve Brantly and Debrorah Baie weigh chemicals for their ex- periment. Science l never did believe that routine they always gave us in school about the earth being round. lt's flat as a pancake, and square. There was a scary feeling watching Mr. Bond's rattlesnake kill a mouse for dinner but something interesting about it made me stay and watch. I just don't think l've caught that love for science that my teacher says will get me an A. 97 Mark Kiefer uses the portrait camerafor special effects. Vocational, Technical, Industrial Education To me, there's something magical about being able to work with my hands. . .and make useful things. Like being able to conceive an idea of a building or something, and then draft it out. l.E. showed me how one must plan thoughts well to make them work. It works that way in life too. rieffsf' f Ronnie Engles studies the operation of the lathe. 98 Wayne Goodman begins work on his cedar chest One of the best things about Foods is anticipating the results. Career Education I enjoy going to classes that teach me real skills that I can use. Learning to type or work office machines will help me in a career. Shorthand is invaluable to a secretary. Business training will help me once I'm on my own. lt's fun working with the teachers learning these skills. I feel all girls should take homemaking. f s ..sp It gives me a feeling that I i 'istsr'f itiil ii I Could get along without my parents in a house of my own. ff a. 3 so I enjoy learning to cook and sew. Special Education classes may be the most important of all. They allow everyone to prepare for life. smash' Barbara Wallace finds sewing can be pleasant and rewarding. Art instilled peace within me. There's something about being able to take an emotion, a feeling, and express it on a lifeless canvass, or a staff of music. l feel very close to every work I create too, because in a real sense, it is a part of meg it is me. I found too that the arts are not restricted to just painting, or music, or drama, but that there is art in everything, the way the wind sways the trees, the setting of the sun, the flight of a gull, a human breath. You see, to me anyway, art is life. Floyd Cooper brushes the finishing touches on a portrait. Health Safety and Physical Education I always liked gym for the physical activity. . . playing basketball, swimming, gymnastics, or going to sixth hour. . . learning skills to be healthy. . .The coaches were important. Without some physical exertion I could not be myself. Drivers' Education was boring in class, yet exciting and fun, when I got to drive a car. The simulators seemed unreal but some of the films in class were fun to watch. The driving test was scary. When I finally got my license, I felt more mature. 1'-1 Mr. Luce's drivers' ed. class practices left turn signals. Parallel bars provide excellent physical exercise. K5 Somehow being an officer my senior year seemed a lot more important than it had before. There was more to do, more decisions to be made and less time to make them. I realized that some people really don't care about school activities or supporting a class, but ticket sales for Auntie Mame went a lot better than expected. Everyone seemed to work a little harder this year. Maybe it was because the prom seemed a lot more real than before. Ginny represented our class as Miss Central and Susan was our Girl's State delegate. Dave and Cameron excelled in sports, Alan in Brigadoon. Along with Mr. Teague they guided our class through a successful year, ending with our prom at the Elks' Club and finally graduation. Thinking of graduation, I wish I had worked a little harder, made more friends, become more involved because now it's over and l don't have a chance to do it again. We only started with a little money, and Brenda kept track of it as the amount increased. Homerooms raised money, and our class play By Skin of Our Teeth made over 3600. Karen helped make it a success in her role as the fortune teller. We decorated the third floor for spirit week. We beat the seniors and won the spirit drum. Susan accepted it with pride. Our class had a lot more spirit than I thought. Falina conducted our assembliesg the few we had. It was nice to miss first hour occasionally. Sharon helped us order our senior rings. It was flattering to win an election among people we just met this year. Leading assemblies and helping organize class activities. . . But later when our activities started, we realized how much work was involved. It wasn't always easy to be here at 7:00 for a meeting -we came because we cared. While Debbie and Scott rehearsed for The Family Nobody Wanted, the two Terri's were boosting ticket sales. . .Angela was an attendant to the band queen. Being a sophomore used to scare me, but now I don't know why. Things are a little bigger here and there are a few more people, but everyone's nice. And I like the freedom. Gym wasn't always fun, especially when I had to go to class with wet hair. And I never really liked cutting things up in Biology, but Drivers' Ed. was fun and it helped me get my license. Going out to lunch made the day go a lot better, so I did it as often as l could. Being a sophomore wasn't so bad after all. . . I only fell down the stairs once.
